Reading up on the history behind this album, it's amazing and disturbing. It's about Franklin's Lost Expedition in 1845; an expedition meant to map out the last uncharted parts of the North-Western Passage up in Canada, over a 20,000 British Pound bounty. The two ships; HMS Terror and HMS Erebus became stuck in ice near King William Island, the ships where well stocked with canned food for a prolonged expedition, but most of the cans had lead on them, which poisoned a lot of the men, due to the food being contaminated, the men resorted to cannibalism to stay alive; scurvey, hypothermia and lead poisoning killed most of the crew,, including the captain, John Franklin, and after about a year the remaining crew abandoned the ships, intending to reach the Canadian mainland, only to never be found again. It was only until 2014 that the two ships where found on the coasts of Nunavut. The last song's title are the coordinates where each ship's wreckage was found.

Robert Falcon Scott (* 6. Haven't heard such an amazing piece of art for such a long time... I am absolutely stunned. Symphonic, atmospheric, melodic... full of wrath and hate, fear, sheer emotions... And all of it transported by telling an unusual story... Fascinating. I am completely overwhelmed. Listening it for the tenth time, still finding new elements. 666 out of 10

Great Songs! I love how the band manage to express desperation and the hardness of nature with both instruments and vocals! If you are interessted in the background of the frankling expedition check out also "The Terror" from Utter Silence for a different musical approach (death/ doom).

I almost froze to death listening to this album! 🥶
@Oneiriel Жыл бұрын
Without even understanding the German lyrics, this album still tells a grim tale of the depths of men curious for exploration and the hardship and suffering that goes along with it. The album starts with the sounds of the creaking wood of a boat bobbing in water. A slight uneasy wind blowing, as the wood begins to groan, and the listener boards the ship for this journey on an arctic archipelago into uncharted territory, along with the sailors of the expedition. The wood almost sounds like it's splintering apart, putting the listener ill at ease. This is an unnerving foreboding of a voyage doomed from the start. The ships are soon frozen and trapped in the ice, left to float on the waves of a desolate, lonely sea in a frozen tundra right into the heart of an icy death. Those aboard must survive the harsh weather conditions and each other while being stalked by an elusive menace - Death. The artwork displayed throughout the album really adds to the atmosphere of this ill-fated journey, as the hopelessness becomes intolerable, as we slog on towards the end. In the artwork, you see a distressed Captain, a man sleeping while a mysterious figure hovers over the man holding a scythe. A funeral is then held. The men then have what looks to be a feast. But the men do not look happy. They just adorn blank expressions. I can't be sure, but it looks like they are eating a human. Then in the closing track, you can hear the ice cracking, waves, and the sound of being submerged in water. As the last piece of artwork shows a sinking boat, a hopeless feeling washes over me. Yet I keep hitting repeat on this stellar release.

RIGHT?? Very well put, I don't speak or understand any German, but this album is as good a reason to learn as anything, WOW. Also, the pinging sonar in a few songs was bloody CHILLING. Not one weak moment in the whole album.

Completely agreed. Completely. This is referred (as maybe it’s has been commented) to the Franklin Lost Expedition looking for the Northern Passage thru North Pole trying to find a quicker route to Asia and China. Allow me to tell you that I DID NOT KNOW anything about this history passage. The very first I listened to this album I got hooked. I translated the lyrics (google), read all about it on Wikipedia and watch the whole TV series. I must confess that someday I went into tears after knowing all the context. This is a great great historic work and a musical masterpiece for me, I hope one day to meet its makers. Thank you BMP and Antrisch, my respects.

They were still very far from North Pole. And there is a passage. It's just almost impossible to go through. The funeral is the one of Captain Franklin. The island was also (and still is) inhabited by Inuit people.

@Oliver Seiring Damn , i was just kidding.... It was a sarcastic comment. I can not laugh with the demise of Sir John Franklin and his crew , and certenly not dancing on their graves. Knowing what they have suffered , wich many of the people who find it ' cool ' or ' evil ' ; would not endure for two hours.... I have not heard a single note of this record and i will not , but for me ; there are borders you do not cross. R.I.P Sir. John Franklin and his crew.

@@tomdetemmerman878 Wtf?! There are thousands of bands whose material is inspired by tragic events. Do you also avoid all war-themed music like Sabaton, 1914, Bolt Thrower, and so on, because it sings of war and people suffered there? Or stuff like witch burnings, or Iron Maiden's Paschendale or Montsegur? Don't listen to this if you're that stuck up, but unless you also avoid those other bands, which are like... 50% of metal... you're just a weirdly selective hypocrite.

Auch wenn ich das Album noch nicht gehört habe und erstmal diesen Kommentar verfasse, ist es jetzt schon einer der interessantesten Werke, die ich mir, zu Gemüte geführt habe.
