Some advice I've heard, and given, is that "It doesn't matter what 'most people would pay for your original art' because only one person is going to buy it. You don't need to convince a mass of consumers, you need that piece of art to resonate with ONE person and that's it, and they'll be willing to pay you for what it's really worth. You're not competing with Walmart, you're making ART."

This is going to sound harsh, but I think an artist of your calibre can take it. With a pattern like that, it just doesn’t work unless it is damn near perfect. The $9500 wow factor would be there if it weren’t for the misalignments in the pattern. Some parts of the pattern are 1/4” off across the joint! Anyways, it’s a great sculpture and you know it, but I think earnest critique (not hate) is good for any artist.

I really appreciate your take on the financial side of a career in art. I do a ton of textile stuff (knit/crochet/etc) for fun, but have never turned it into a business because pretty much no one wants to pay for 10 hours of labor to knit a hat when you can just buy a machine-knit one. On the other hand, a lot of people I know with sewing businesses (custom dance/skating/etc costumes) say to charge at least minimum wage for your when starting out, and increase from there.

I've been told I could sell these little fairy light trees I've made for family but... I couldn't see it making enough to be worth it. Materials aren't expensive but it take at least a week in terms of hours to make them. (So about a month in total since I have to do other life things). Plus I have severe chronic back pain. There's just no way I can see someone even paying minimum waged hours for them. Minimum wage where I live is $15 24 hours a day for a full week is 168 hours. 168 hours for 15per hour is 2520. There's just no way someone is paying 2 grand for a light up wire tree that's less than a foot tall...

My own choice, if you would want to stick to a translucent body would be lead crystal, but I personally think the disparity in material distracts from your incredible wood working, tho I do think the 2nd body does work better. I'm in love with this result of making slug mummies.❤😂 Now, I don't know much about art, but I've seen knives and swords go for way more than $10k, so why not a beautiful slug sculpture?

I really liked the glitter. But I really liked the purple & black tones in the second one I think if you blended them it would’ve been perfect!

I did some research on large artistic snail sculptures. There's quite a few out there though I wouldn't have included some which were 3 x 4" and under. Of the ones I found that were over a thousand dollars they were good for what they were. Some snails would be expensive at half the price. Your snail, and I'm assuming you're a well known sculptor with a wide and well sold oeuvre, is, not one I could afford but your price is reasonable. Many people who buy any art do not see the time spent firstly in research, drawings, and the cost of having to scrap some or all of your work and start again. Most want something that, when they see it day in day out, it still makes them smile and nod appreciatively and to themselves. "Yes, that is a good buy". I think your snail will do that for someone ". 😊

That is so beautiful! I love snails and thus one is magnificent. Definitely worth the asking price and, if i had that kind of money, it would be sitting in my house right now. I absolutely love it!

Final slug much better than the first. Based on your comments regarding the pattern error, I was expecting a flawless pattern. But still looks great!
