BMW 1 Series Rear Suspension Bent Damaged, Bashed Kerb In Snow, How To Repair, & Fit Gravity Arms

The Bmw Stepped Out On The Ice Hitting The Rear Wheel On The Kerb.
In this video I straighten out a bent subframe, Fit some fully adjustable rear track rods, and set the tracking using a string line.
The upgraded track rods were from Gravity Suspension bought new on eBay for £129

Just had mine done on 5 series - same type of accident. Amazingly, the car has had new tyres, MOT and even been into BMW on a recall, and no one picked up on it. Its 11 months since the prang and i only noticed the uneven wear when changing another tyre, so I’ve just had to pay for what should have been included in my insurance claim 🙄

Can i ask when you had this damage to the car, and rhe steering was off centre, did the car feel a bit strange when put your foot on the break, like slightly jittery?

I think you should have your car professionally aligned to the millimeters so that the tires do not wear out incorrectly

why waste money when I know the wheel alignment is spot on, I also have a set of tracking gauges but know from experience the string line is perfect for front to rear alignment, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

Yes. I would agree with this comment. The string line is a a fantastic way of aligning a car but, what youv failed to adress in this method of using a string line is, it only works if both front front rear track widths are the same and unfortunately on pretty much every e8x they are not. Yes it can be done by measuring the gaps etc etc but it gets really complicated. String lines are fantastic and whilst I use one my self all be it a little differently (I use toe plates and do the front and rear axle independently) I would 100% be getting It lazer aligned if its a daily driver. That being said, Great informative video on the subframe issue though. iv just put a full set of gravity rear arms on mine to get better more even tire wear on my track days.

Thanks for the video, I found it because my son reversed into my daughter's E88 and bent the toe link bracket. There is no space in the E88 to get a portapack in there, but I was able to do it with wood and ratchet straps. Just a few notes on the string alignment - it’s a perfectly good way to align a car, but firstly it needs to be checked when the car is on the ground, not on the jacks, because the wheels will move when the suspension is loaded. Also if you make a frame (you can use 2 x upvc pipes or anything that is equal length) and measure out from the centre of each wheel hub to make sure it’s perfectly square and then use a ruler to measure distances from the front and back of each wheel you can get much better results that a laser alignment system operated by a teenager who hasn’t got a clue at a garage. Finally, it might be that the rear is perfect but you have a toe problem on the front of the car (clearly in your case, you knew where the fault was) rather than the rear, which is less common when it comes to a steering wheel not straight.

Good video mate! Iv got a e90 bmw 320d, rear driver side wheel is leaning in at the top. After hitting a curb. All 4 arms have been replaced new hub aslo, any ideas would be much appreciated mate

I did almost the exact same thing to my car on the same wheel. My steering wheel was to the right alot and the wheel was towed out just like yours. Checked all arms and none of them were bent to the naked eye but I brought it to a mechanic and he was convinced it was the knukle. Do the knukles usually bend too? After watching your video I'm convinced I'm more likely to have the issue your having. My car is a 2006 325xi so I'd assume the sub frame setup is identical correct me if I'm wrong though.

Fantastic video. Thank you for putting it together. I have an 08 E93 335I and just recently got it stuck in sand. Had to tow it out by pulling on the wheels because I didn't have the tow hook. Steering wheel is off, alignment is so far out it can't be put back into spec. Seeing you repair your car after the curb hit gives me comfort knowing there might be hope to get mine back into spec. I never realized how flimsy the rear crossmember is. I see a welded stiffening bar in my future if mine is bent like yours was.

Hi. Did install the tracking arms but the one on drivers side is touching the spring and had to install the original one again ,the other side fits perfectly well. Any ideas? Also are the arms identical or left and right are different? Thanks

I have another 3 series on here today and checked on the arms (original ones) and the gap on the passenger side arm to the spring is bigger then the other side. I know it sounds weired but yes

If its the electric handbrake you will need a eobd reader with the ability to put the brakes into service mode, it automatically rewinds the callipers, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
