*Nathan, Before u go under the lift always gently lower it to where it's resting on a safety latch. You'll see the hydraulic hose lose tension as you reach the lock. I've used this practice for 20 years, same lift, never one problem knock on wood. Not breaking balls, just looking out for you and the hydraulics. Thanks for the cold start, best song I've heard all week 👍

I worked for bmw. Their camber on their wheels is intentional. If you align their wheels directly up and down you run into other issues with transmission and dynamic stability control programs. The car is designed to use the camber of wheels to properly utilize stability control. You cause premature wear to internal parts when you mess with factory camber alignments. And some of those stability controls costs thousands to replace. Tires are relatively inexpensive compared to stability control modules and other parts inside the transmission.

By far the most valuable explanation and warning, to not veer from design. Just swap out those tires, unless you want a project.

BMW's are supposed to have slight negative camber on the rear, they are not at neutral. You need a hunter 4 wheel alignment machine to set it up properly

I just had my four E39 rear upper arms reco'ed. There's a good suspension joint here in Bangkok that will fit new ends to those arms. The bush and the Ball joint. They make all the stuff in-house. I fitted a set of rear sway-bar drop links from them 4 years ago, still tight as a drum. Better than the FEBI's I bought, and sent back for being loose from new. So I trusted them to do the reco. $165 total, including labour :) And I keep my original BMW arms.

If you set the rear camber to neutral it will drive like crap and likely cause positive camber when you're actually driving
@bobavon6048 Жыл бұрын
Anytime you adjust the camber in the rear you must check and or reset the toe settings or you will have major tire wear. Camber first, then toe. Recheck all settings with vehicle on the ground after it has been moved some.

From what I understood, my Z4 since i bought new (2004) has always worn the inside of the rear tyres, if you adjust it so it doesnt then in a corner the tyre wont be flat and you end up with less grip.
@Wors07 Жыл бұрын
It's worth doing. Your losing corner grip "at the limit". Unless your z4 is a race car you'll appreciate longer tire life. And you'll gain grip going straight with less camber. It's a trade off.

nice 2002 you got there ❤...BTW on the rear camber...do you need to loose the bolt on the other side of where you did the ratchet setting to 0? or just adjusting without any other intervention? tanx in advance. I have all 2013 x3...is it the same setup?

You need EZ Red wrenches. The flex head double box end ratcheting style. Also get you some magnetic camber gauges. You can set camber really easily with those. I think the north star company sells those. Should be slightly negative on these cars. 5 series non XDrive always chew up rear tires as it is anyways.

I have 2002/09 E53 3.0i without air suspension. rear axle got rebuilt with Meyle HD and Lemförder pieces and the car has got alignment done 3 times now (first time after rear axle rebuild, 2nd time after two arms were replaced in front axle and 3rd time was after I hit the pavement on black ice). yet after all those alignments every time it looks to me when looking from the rear, that rear wheels are still slanting inwards compared to fron wheels. is there like some sort of compensation angle to get it perfectly straight or should it actually stay within the AutoData or whatever software they use on the alignment bench?
