The later one had the more problematic engines. The inline 6s were still good but the 4 cylinder petrols had that valvetronic nonsense and the 4 cylinder diesels alps had problems. Obviously the VANOS can go on the 6 cylinders but many people know how to fix it so that's okay obviously their is the plastic cooling system but that's not to bad either. Inline 6 is the way to go on the E90 but the inline 6s still aren't as good as the E46s and the E90 diesels the N47 isn't as good as older M47 but the later E46s also had those valvetronic 4 cylinder petrol engines
