You should always pre-soak the filter. Otherwise you will have oil being absorbed into the filter before it started to circulate in the engine. Not a huge deal but still nice to do. Over 20+ oil changes it can save a lot of metal on metal wear.

Useful post, thanks. I use 15W40 diesel oil in my 318iC. Runs smoother and at the 5K clicks oil change intervals, the diesel oil has not even started to break a sweat. I don't run it in the winter. For the oil and service lights on the dash, I use a reset tool that I got from Dealextreme.com for 11 bucks. Works like a charm.

For this oil change I used 20W-50 but I went 15W-40 for the winter.

It depends on the temperature of where the car is mostly driven and the way the car is driven. According to the E30 Bently Service Manual 10w-40 has a temperature rating between -20°F and 50°F
