Today we are replacing every single fluid in my 1984 BMW 318i E30 with the M10 engine and a 3 speed Automatic Transmission!
This video will give you a brief explanation and how to on every single fluid in the vehicle. This includes using an engine flush and doing an oil change with new filter, coolant flush or drain and fill, brake fluid flush, transmission flush or drain and fill, removing the transmission pan, replacing the washer fluid, replacing the rear end gear oil, and flushing the power steering fluid with a new reservoir/filter!
I hope you enjoy or learn something new!

I am always so happy to see you do meticulous work. It's almost like watching you put a model car together wich was my favorite past time growing up, you know the 1/24 scale where if your OCD you paint every single part to construct a master piece! Johnny! I try! Reorganized the garage with you in mind, gotta have a good lookin back drop. It was starting to get a little messy and didnt feel intentional... Ive always wanted to put one of those together! especially with the mini engine that runs on fuel! lolol that would be a slick looking headliner. Ive always wanted a mexican blanket patterned headliner or seat cover. Hope all is well my friend!

Hi Alec - I don't recall having any difficulty with smog, but with one of my cars that sat for quite a while, didn't pass smog, so the mechanic told me to drive it for a while and then come back, and it passed smog just fine. I wonder if the BMW place still has records on me because I have no idea if the catalytic converter was replaced. @@DayOffDIY

Watching you remove that oil pan made me not thrilled that I have that job to do on my e46. Your pan was SO much easier to get to. I'm trying to decide if I need to take down the subframe to get to mine. But then I could do engine mounts and a new power steering pump too, so maybe you've talked me into it! LOL! Great video and love seeing old bimmers that are so well cared for.
@tinajohnson7534
@tinajohnson7534 7 ай бұрын
Power steering pump just went out after almost 24 years. So that is definitely on my list of must do's. The task of dropping the subframe on this car seems daunting since I've never done this. The reason why watching videos like this is so helpful. @@davidwesternall873
@DayOffDIY
@DayOffDIY 7 ай бұрын
Hey! Thanks for the comment. Yeah this is the easiest oil pan I think ive ever done! LOL. Ive done too many E46 oil pans, but i must say that out of all the chassis that require dropping of the subferame, the E46 is probably the easiest. I wish I had a video on it, ill try to do one in the near future. You should be able to replace the P/S pump without dropping the subframe, and that can help build up confidence leading up to the pan gasket. Like david said I like to use an engine support bar to support the engine for dropping the subframe. I got one at harbor freight for around 100 bucks. To drop the subframe I remove the nuts from the engine mounts from the top, then down below I disconnect the control arm bushings from the body, remove the sway bar, disconnect the steering collumn shaft, and then its pretty much just the 4 bolts for the subframe. It seems daunting but its not too bad once you get into it. Keep in mind the level sensor attached to the control arm. it needs to be disconnected if fitted with one. Id also absolutely do engine mounts while in there. I hope that helps if you do decide to tackle it, and thanks for the support and feedback!

@@DayOffDIY Awesome! Thanks for the advice. I'm heading out now to start to tackle some of these issues, so hopefully it will go well. I might just do the PS pump first and tackle the rest later. Every little thing I so on this car does build my confidence.

Loving the progress. It’s gonna give someone many more years of reliable service. I def love the bags of gear lube. So much easier than the bottles or even the pumps. My 85 318i actually has a fan shroud. Maybe there was a mid year change or someone retrofitted it. You’re right in how hard parts are to find for these early e30s and esp the m10. one quick question. you removed all the oil from the engine and put new oil back in. BUUUUUUT. shouldnt you remove sparkplugs and just make te engine rotate to pump the new oil into the system and then you put sparkplugs to turn it on? (it seems likke without this you are running without oil for the first start )
@DayOffDIY
@DayOffDIY 4 ай бұрын
technically if you had a brand new engine this is what I would do, but there is residual oil on the bearings and in the rotating assembly so theres enough lubrication for a safe start up. Also the oil filter housing usually holds some oil to keep the oiling system primed
