What a stunning review, Thank you! HYBRID? Does it make any sense lugging around a battery and electric motor when you have a perfectly good petrol engine? HYBRID! Does it make any sense lugging around a petrol engine, and fuel when you have a perfectly good electric motor and battery? No it does not, except for one tiny detail: IT BLOODY WELL WORKS! I am approaching the end of a love affair with my 2018 330e, as the five year warranty ends soon. I have torn out my little remaining hair trying to find a replacement: Audi have some nice alternatives, but they are all outside my budget. After weeks of agonising, there is only one car (that I can afford), and that is the car you reviewed here. The improvements from the F30 to the G20 are all desirable, especially the larger battery. (If I win the Lottery, it will be the 330e Touring (wagon), available this year for the first time.) It is impossible to arrive at a conclusion for plug-in hybrids, because they may be perfect for one owner's scenario, but totally pointless for another. (i.e. someone with nowhere to plug it in!) Even though our car has only a 25km electric range, we are now retired and mainly do short trips... 85% of our motoring is electric. We moved our energy plan to one offering three hours free electricity per day. The car automatically begins charging at the start of that period, so the majority of our motoring has no cost for fuel. Compare our situation to someone who does big daily mileage (Company Rep, for instance): yes, they will get their cheap 40km at the start of the day... after that, they will reap the benefits of regenerative charge into the battery from coasting and braking, but overall they are never going to see the sort of savings that I do. Since 1980, I have always had a 3 series BMW. The most powerful was a 335d Touring; an effortless tourer, but that big diesel lump up front became noticeable whenever a nice twisty road appeared. The 330e does not have quite the same endless torque, but it is better balanced, and effortlessly puts in quicker times over a mountainous road we travel... the electric drive instantly kicks in out of hairpins, and fills in any gap in accelleration intil the turbo spools up. This has been a car for all moods: Dial up Eco Pro / Comfort mode and enjoy the cruise... OR Hit Sport Mode Plus, traction control off, make music with the paddles and the eight-speed trans and knock yerself out with the adrenaline rush! AND YOU'VE STILL GOT YOUR PANTS ON! 🥴

I just got one (not the M edition). I did a 264 km round trip for a meeting. I got just over 51 km on electric, then charged it while on the motorway, it was fully charged in about 35 minutes and I switched back to electric. Did not get a chance to charge while parked so just kept going with the partial battery and then charged on the go again on my way back. I managed 96 km in total on electric out of the 264 km round trip. I'm impressed, and very much enjoying the car.

@youngloch Жыл бұрын
Had mine for over 18 months now and loving it. With increased electric cost though then, particularly in the winter, I'm starting to charge it less. Main issue is that in winter, if you put the heater on, the electric range absolutely plummets - personally, driving sensibly in the winter and only putting heater on to clear the windows, I'd expect a range of 20-22 miles and in the summer that was 28-30 miles both of which beats petrol prices even now. However my wife, who refuses to drive and be cold, managed to turn my 6 miles with 75% left into 12 miles with about 10% range left because she insisted on having the heater running full blast! On that basis I wouldn't even bother plugging it in now if she's taking it for a spin! What I haven't quite worked out yet is whether the battery control function is worth using compared to just running on petrol. When electric was cheap it wasn't even something I thought of because I was only going to the petrol station three times a year but now, it is the "unknown" that I want to find the answer to. Is anyone regularly using battery control? Is it worth it? Also surely it's healthy for the car to do a reasonable amount of miles using the petrol engine isn't it? Overall though it's the best car I'd had the pleasure to own and I'm not intending to switch!

Hi there, I've had mine since Sept 2020, same colour & spec. I've used two tanks of petrol in that time (1,600 miles/2,574km) as I haven't done much company car driving in the last year! Just a couple of things - you can order luggage nets for the backs of the front seats (I know, should come as standard - come on BMW!) and you get wireless phone charging with the Tech Pack, which also gives you a Harmon Kardon stereo, heads up display and keyless entry. Reverse assist and park assist are amazing and my 200 mile (320km) drive today gave me 54mpg at normal-high motorway speeds on just the overnight charge + petrol (eco pro mode). Great review and enjoyed watching (love my car too!)

@@ricardopereira597 I don't know if you've had your question answered Richardo but I've got the older model 330e, 2017 version (absolutely loving it!) and you don't need to worry. The battery never fully drains (it always keeps some back) and so while you'll be cruising at 184hp so if you put your foot down to overtake the battery still kicks in giving you full power - this is EVEN when it says you have zero range left in it. That's what I've read and exactly what I've experienced in mine so no need to worry on that account. I had a BMW 320d tourer with 200hp before - drove really, really well but despite the extra weight of the batteries in the 330e (which you barely notice to be honest) I would never go back to it. I just love the extra oomph and the slick handling of this 330e - REALLY love it.

Okay I own a 330e M sport just like the one your driving. I can only charge at home and travel 110 - 170 miles per day for my work. It averages 47mpg over 5000 miles done. The most I’ve ever seen on electric is 32 miles on a very warm day. Cold weather kills the battery 🔋 to around 22 miles range (hybrid Standard) Never put in Eco Pro unless you can charge the other end of the journey! Also it will only charge at 6 miles per hour so totally pointless in putting on a public charger it still take 1/2 a day to charge!!!! Overall the car is great but is a work car not so good as the £42 per month home charging is not refundable on expenses! So all the BIK you save compared to a Self Charging vehicle is lost!! And you have all the hassle of plugging it in. Thanks for a good overall review. BTW self charge function drops MPG to 25-27 MPG and takes around 1 hour of driving to charge it.

There is one thing I can not understand, so I was considering buying one of these but the electricity does not make sense. For example it should do on average 30 miles to a full charge which is approx 12 KW/H (the size of the battery) which works out at 433 w/h per miles , todays electricity price is 0.49p per KW/h , so that is 0.49 x 0.433 = 21p per mile. That is more expensive than petrol ! and then you have the added weight and extra work the engine will have to do reducing the miles per gallon even further for when the battery is depleated. Can anyone explain to me why this makes sense To charge the bettery will cost £5.88 to do 30 miles !
@KINGKING1010910 ай бұрын
It only makes sense if you charge it at home. Also, you don’t actually have to charge it. You can turn battery control on & it’ll charge up whilst you drive in petrol. But imo, it’s a failed system. The petrol tank is smaller so you get less range, & when the Electric runs out the mpg on the ICE alone is less than on the standard petrol car. Also, you’d be very lucky to even get 30 miles of range. I’m currently only getting about 17
@welshminty10 ай бұрын
@@KINGKING10109 I am finding exact same thing my mpg since 20mph was introduced in Wales has dropped to 24 and there isn't enough speed for regen. Around 17 is millage I'm getting from battery. The most annoying thing for me tho is the lack of flexibility in hybrid mode. It sets the cut over at 60 miles per hour so it drains battery fast then goes onto petrol. I would rather they work together for max efficiency not one or other. I expected it to help the petrol achieve the desired cruising speed then shut off the electric but at 60 this is way to high. The other issue I have is it slams into potholes there is no give in chassis at all any imperfections in the Road go straight through the whole car. However it has an amazing entertainment system good looks and she does cruise well on motorways. I think having a choice again I'd buy a pure petrol.

Battery Control mode is not so much for charging the battery as it is for keeping the battery from discharging. It's true you can recharge the battery, but that's pretty inefficient. However, it is useful for when you want to force the car to use the petrol engine in order to save the battery for later. In this car, there is no way to force the car to use the ICE without going into some form of sport mode (shifting to M/S or using Sport Mode), but those modes are not very comfortable when driving in the city because the car becomes very aggressive. So, what's the solution then? Yes, to activate Battery Control, select the level of battery you need, and ensure the car will have enough electric energy for when you need it.

You're missing the point of self charging. If you are doing a long journey at steady motorway speeds, you wouldn't be using the electric motor and your engine produces a lot of excess electricity during that time. You can therefore use that to charge you batteries for use when you come off the motorway. It is very useful for those doing a lot of motorway miles.

I think the point of this car is to be a sporty hybrid. that is, you spend 60-70k on it, you don't really care about fuel efficiency, IMO. So, the electric part is just for short distances and silent running for the normal day to day stuff and for the push back in your seat from the electric motor in the sport mode. I think it's a polivalent car and it offers you a lot of things in one package, with some obvious but minor drawbacks, like being heavier, having a smaller boot and a lower range in petrol mode. but I think it's a very nice package to have and frankly, a nice way to get into electric cars, but not having to live with their cons

I don't think the idea of the battery control is to use the petrol engine to charge the battery, more so you can set a percentage of battery aside. If you don't have any charging at your destination, you can set the battery control to 50% so the car splits battery use between the out and return trips.

Great video, but I think a real interesting question wasn’t. The car has 184hp combustion engine. And more the. 250hp combined. If you go on freeway and drain the 50km battery with speed let’s say 160kmh After that the car only runs on 184hp in terms of performance isn’t that true?

@@NobbyOnCars except the weight penalty. These cars are designed for company car drivers to avoid benefit in kind tax, I certainly have no problem with that as I am guilty as charged too!!! The problem is some companies reimburse their drivers using HMRC AFR (approved fuel rates) and here is the nub, 2.0L PHEV's like this pay only 12p a mile means unless this car does at least 45mpg on petrol alone on longer trips the driver will be out of pocket! That is what I am getting at, its a crucial number to know (mpg on petrol alone) and I bet BMW would prefer some potential buyers not to know. We have several staff who have got stuck in long lease contracts with these BMW PHEVS and now subsidise their own jobs daily, because the official fuel consumptions figures are so attractive but there is no data on the truth after the battery is used.
@eddie87423 жыл бұрын

Mark, the bmw type 2 cable is auto coiling. So if you remove it fully it will coil up into a very small amount of space. It looks like the press car, so I’d say the cable is just tangled to bits! It will take up less space in the glovebox then, or sorry, I mean boot 🤣

ffs no one who owns an electric vehicle and certainly not a hybrid carries the cables with them. in every review of this car i see ppl complain about the cables taking up space in the boot but ffs NO ONE CARRIES THE CABLES WITH THEM. you either charge at home or at a charging station. most ppl have wall mounted chargers at home and if you don't then you use the cables, but there would be no point in taking them with you because charging stations have cables mounted. cmon, like just think about it, why the fuck would one need to carry the cables with them? especially in a hybrid where you have the petrol engine to fall back on as well.
@NobbyOnCars3 жыл бұрын
And on street chargers have cables do they?
@Maximilian_Ingrosso3 жыл бұрын
Nobby On Cars 1st off, 99% of people in the world don’t use them so it’s meaningless to complain about the charging cables taking up space if it only goes for 1% of potential buyers. I have never even heard about on street chargers, but as for what I found on Google, they’re only found in the UK and as far as i know they are mostly located in London and some other city centers. 2nd, if you need all the space in the trunk it’s most likely for a roadtrip and you could just leave the charging cables at home, the majority of chargers are chargers with mounted cables anyways so if you want to charge along your road trip you can certainly find one (not that you need it because the regeneration is enough to reduce the petrol usage by quite a lot). Admittedly as I said earlier, I have never heard about on street chargers, but my point still stands, the vast majority of ppl with hybrids or EVs in the world don’t carry the cables with them so it doesn’t make sense to complain about them taking up space. And if you happen to be someone that for some reason can ONLY charge at one of these chargers and have no possible way of charging at a mounted charger, I’m sure you can just use the petrol engine and regeneration that one time where you need the entire trunk and the entire back row of seats and have no where else to store the charging cables. I mean isn’t that the entire point of having a hybrid? The flexibility of it, the ability to have an electric car for small trips to and from work and then a petrol car for road trips that’s also able to use less petrol than pure petrol cars. It doesn’t seem like the charging cables taking up space would present a problem in any possible scenario.
@NobbyOnCars3 жыл бұрын
"99% of people in the world don't use them".. it's too early on a Monday for this - all the best!
@Maximilian_Ingrosso3 жыл бұрын
Nobby On Cars i mean, i’m from Norway and we have more Electric and hybrid vehicles than the UK and we don’t have those types of chargers. Every single review i’ve seen on hybrids and EVs never use an on Street charger, they always use the ones with mounted cables and it doesn’t seem hard to find them. Anyways why wouldn’t you address the other points that clearly shows that in no scenario is it a problem, even if you have to use an on street charger?
