I have sold my 523i last year. It had 603000miles in it! Almost a million km! I wasn't even thinking on buying something new instead. I bought a low mileage E39 528i an i will keep it for many many more years. I also bought two 540is a sedan and a touring, in case i will run into some small issues a will still have some backup cars, and also because they are holding value quiet nice, maybe they will be increasing at some time too... I don't think i will have mobility issues in the next couple decades with these cars owned. I recommend this to everyone. Don't buy a new car, get some E39s instead. You think it is not environmentally correct? Think about how low the effectiveness of reclycling a car is, how much emmissions it takes to produce a brand new car, and also and how many more miles i can still make in these cars comfortabely, with only 2-3litres more fuel burnt per 100km. It will take millions of kms to make up for the damage you caused by making a new car. Which won't last that much either...

Great to hear! Got my e39 530i as my first car and it's just been such a joy. My only issue is a bit of oil consumption. Did yours ever consume oil?

As an E39 540i owner, NO E39 is reliable. However they are worth it. The V8s are definitely more sturdy than the 6 cylinder engines if you manage to overheat either of them, the V8 will most likely survive whereas the 6 cylinders are prone to head gasket failures or warped heads under that circumstance, outside of that, reliability wise, the community agrees they are about the same (give or take per each owners experience) The 5HP19 used in the 6 cylinder engines can lose reverse from relatively low miles, whereas the 5HP24 in the V8s are a bit more robust. However if you service either of these transmissions they should treat you very well, whining or jerky shifts indicates low fluid. Something completely glossed over in this video is the cooling system. They are notoriously fragile in these cars, if you purchase one without any evidence of recent cooling system work, budget for replacement parts (radiator, hoses, fan clutch, Go for a HEPU brand water pump if you can). cooling system failures are probably the biggest killer of 6 cylinder models and the main reason why they end up in a scrap yard. Provided the cooling system is looked after, a manual transmission 6 cylinder E39 should last an incredibly long time. The V8 engines do suffer from timing chain guide failure from around 150k miles (sometimes they last well over 200k) This is a heavily documented DIY job and should you have the tools and confidence, it can be done by the most novice of mechanics. I have never heard about nikasil liners being a problem in the US or UK, they may be confusing that information with the E34, which even than had very few reported problems as it ultimately wasn't an issue anyway, or engines were replaced under warranty. I can only recommend these cars to someone who will truly know they will enjoy it and is not afraid to work on their own cars and never as a "cheap runabout", because it wont be. You should be diligent with maintenance (like any car really) and they will go forever and ever. Enjoy!

I own two Alpina B10 V8's and can confirm your comments about the V8's 100%. Not very reliable and very expensive to maintain, but you forget that at the moment you drive them. I've owned a lot of nice BMW's, including M3 e46, e90 and Alpina's D5 and B5, but the e39 B10 V8(S) is just the best 'non-digital' daily drivers car. It even beats the e39 M5 in daily driving imo (I once swapped cars for a week with a friend who owns an E39 M5 & he agrees btw)

Other problems I had with my E39 525D M57 engine about 400k kms: I know that for most cars 400k kms is a lot, but this BMW it's still awesome at this mileage. This car at this point runs awesomely. Yesterday an experienced mechanic told me that I have a jewel under my ass. But even in that case I can't expect a 14 year old car to run as new. I've heard from other people as well about most of the following problems: - Thermostat failed - All 6 glow plugs failed - Both engine mounts broke - Both transmission bearing sets (gearbox mount) broke - AC ventilator failed - There are 3 fuel pumps (1 high-pressure, 2 normal), one of the low-pressure failed - Flexible exhaust coupling leaked - Drive shaft (cardan) makes noise (no observable issue but annoying clicking sound) - Turbo pipes leaked - Front shock absorber failed - Parking sensor failed - Car key battery failed - Xenon lights ballast failed - Rear brake pipe failed - Handbrake shoes failed

Small corrections: there's no need to coding ECU after MAF replaced if you assembled new one with same number. Automatic gearbox need fresh oil after 50000 km - not after 120000 miles. Fading pixels cost less than 30 euro for MID and about 50 euro for tacho, so not so very expensive (even cheaper if you do this by your own ).
