In this E39 BMW Buyers Guide I show you how to search for an E39 5 series sedan, quite possibly the finest model BMW ever made. I share with you some of the things I look for when evaluating what E39 to buy 525i, 528i, 530i, 540i or M5 and the tips and tricks to identifying what options the car came with from the factory. Using a BMW VIN decoder to determine the options, production date, color combination and other details is free and easy to do as long as you can get the VIN number provided to you by the seller.
I'll also do a walk-around of the car, checking out all of the spots to check for rust and corrosion that are common for the E39. I also demonstrate the infamous E39 seat twist which my 530i currently suffers from, as do many other five series sedans of this vintage. To repair the seat twist cables can be replaced for around $100 USD or simply trimmed at no cost other than a few hours time per side.
Finally, I outline what other areas to test and check, along with testing the electronics, windows and sunroof. You'll see a hidden feature on the E39 that allows you to roll all four windows up and down at once along with the sunroof. The test drive portion will allow you to inspect for any vibrations the car may have, noises, rattles, shimmy under braking and clunking from the ball joints or front suspension.

@@BIMMERZEITT Thank you for the quick reply :) Yeah I'm in Sweden, we've got a fair amount of diesel E39s here. They usually go for higher prices than the gas equivalents, so yeh they seem to be quite popular. I don't have much in terms of budget, so I may have to "settle" for an 523i in a few months when I get my drivers license. :) I know almost nothing about repairing and maintaining cars, but I'm willing to learn, so I'll probably binge your channel in the coming months :D Keep up the good work!

That was the best E39 buyer's guide I have ever seen! I have owned a 2003 530I sport for several years and you were spot on. Here are a few minor points I would add: 1.) Not all the tools are included with every car model. For example, your reflectors looked like they were missing but they may have never been included when new. 2.) Check for dropped pixels on your radio and on your dash. It looked like yours was missing a couple. These can be repaired for not too much money. I have done both my dash and my radio. 3.) Your cup holders are probably broken. They all are. 4.) Check the manifold guards for oil stains which are a clue that your valve cover may have leaked. 5.) Check for oil leaks. If its a BMW it probably has some. Notorious are the valve cover and the power steering system. Also watch for the oil filter housing. 6.) Suspect the cooling system. White powder on any of the components is a warning. BTW, they should have blue BMW coolant. Blue coolant is a sign that the previous owner cared enough to buy the good stuff. 7.) Look for tire wear on the inside of the rear tires. This is common and partially due to the negative camber BMW puts into these cars. The idea was to make the tires flatten out on hard turns. Reality is that most cars are probably not driven that hard for the most part. Thanks again for posting. Dan A, Rochester, NY

Very comprehensive overview of the common issues with E39, probably worthwhile to mention to check for any oil leaks - especially around the rocker cover gaskets, power steering hose, oil pan, rear main seal etc, go underneath the car and check for any oil dripping - a very common issue for all older BMW! Other stuff like faulty window regulators, broken cupholders, dead pixel on the dash etc.

Also, you can ask if the brake fluid has been changed recently or if the auto box has been serviced, same for the rear diff, ask has the oil been changed...I'd also have a good look under the car to check the condition of the exhaust, they dont normally rust but can have impact damage or rot if you live where salt is put down on the roads in the winter. I'd also while your down there look for oil leaks from the engine, gearbox & back axle.... Good video 👍

Abs module failure Constant coolant system failures and rebuilds constantly chasing oil leaks. I live in SE Texas and purchased a 2001 525i last year with 54,000 original miles on it. It had been sitting for years after the old couple that owned it passed away. It seems to have the normal e39 issues such as leaking valve cover, seat twist and a few others. The suspension is tight, but I have found that many ov the joint boots are dry rotted and falling apart. it also has a very small amount of rust starting around the gas cap area. Overall it is pretty good. Plan to have it in shape in a couple years for my daughter's first car. I am new to BMW and must say this e39 is an amazing car. I grew up with Audi since my dad has been an Audi technician for close to 50 years.

Seat twist - it's caused by the black plastic cable housing expanding and pulling the steel cable flex shaft out of it's socket at the motor by mm. Simply find the offending cable (There's a few in there, you're best removing the seat entirely), and cut of 1/4 inch of housing (don't cut too much), reassemble - fixed permanently and for nix.

Excellent review of buying one of these great cars - WELL DONE. At the end of the day and this applies to any old car - buy the E39 that has Documented SERVICE HISTORY. Don't be fooled by the owners talk about yes its all been done etc but they've lost the history...but look at the great paint he says - while you stare at the lovely alloy wheels which make the car look fantastic - which makes you buy it! As soon as you get it home your world will fall apart with issues. Service history with any old car is paramount - there are still one owner E39s out there and they are the ones to go for due to in most cases the original owners care! Enjoy - they are great cars.

I have two 2001 530D SE Tourings, one manual (purchased 2007) and one auto (purchased 2012). They both have approx 260,000 kms on them. No major mechanical issues except for a blown turbo on the manual soon after I bought it, probably due to it being unused for 12 plus months. Electrical fault on rear wash/wipe on the auto due to broken wires in the right hand tailgate hinge. A common problem due to the design/build of the wiring loom. Classic design and still simple enough for a home mechanic to undertake almost all of the maintenance and repair work. The torque combined with the self-levelling suspension make the 530D Touring a great towing car, they easily tow our 1,600 kg Hobby caravan and the fuel economy is excellent.

Thanks for the great video, I'm considering buying a 2003 525i. Am hesitant though because I hear repairs, if needed, can be exorbitantly expensive, and I'm on a tight budget. But I've always wanted one! Some owners I hear say they've never had any issues, whereas others say it's a money pit. I guess all cars can be this way. Maybe I should look for something like a Lexus and get a BMW later. Decisions decisions.

BSJ the e39 is a great car but any used bmw will be expensive to own unless you can learn to DIY repairs. At least the consumables like brakes and oil changes. I’d avoid automatic 525i’s they have transmission issues and are underpowered. The 530i is comparable in price and has more power and larger brakes - a more robust transmission. Lexus will be reliable too but they are nothing like a BMW in terms of ride, handling and road feel. You should test drive both. With nearly 100 e39 videos on my channel you should be able to handle most repairs.

@@delatroy had to do chain guides, so about $1800. I've this far thrown another circa $1500 in maintenance and upgrades at it. E38 msport front seats, redid the valve covers, bought a strut bar, spherical ucabs. Got the car with eibach sways, and had to upgrade to stronger rear sway bar brackets as kept popping the passenger bracket. Also serviced the trans. I spend my $ looking at the long term cost of ownership. I also scavenge the junk yard and hoard stuff as required. I do also have a hellrot e34 540i6 and an alpine on black e38 msport, so continued perfection is the goal. E34 is on staggered 18 inch style 5s, have a spare set of staggered 18 schnitzers, dinan sways, racing dynamics rear links, 3.15 lsd, wokke hip, dinan intake manifold, m62 NV throttle body(more air as no wedge on butterfly) racing dynamics strut bar, vogtland progressive springs and koni adjustable shocks. I added a new msport front bumper and m5 rear, also has 850i double pistonfront calipers. The e38 has eibach lowering springs and koni adjustable shocks, guides done, powder coated valve covers, 750il front and rear brake calipers, 20 inch staggered style 32s, suede headliner, some other bits and upgrades. Tastefully done work imo. I've installed moosehead spherical ucabs in all 3 cars.

Brilliant guide! Just don't buy anything with rust on it as that's what's ultimately killing these cars, no proper galvanised or aluminium panels. Just behind the wheel arches, the sills and wings will rust away, as well as the jack points - and basically all underneath the plastic. 2 things. No1. E39 has 2 fuel tanks and 3 fuel pumps. Left tank drains first into the right tank for better weight distribution counting for the driver and its a bit nono to run e39 on reserve fuel because the left pump runs dry leaving the main 3rd pump to work hard. And 2nd , you did not mention to check under the car rocker pannels witch rust hard and fail the inspection.

Yes there was a major airbag recall, which should be done ASAP if it hasn't been. All US BMW dealers will replace the airbags free of charge. Check if a car you're considering still has an open recall here: www.bmwusa.com/safety-and-emission-recalls.html Yes, it seems that the 525 automatic transmissions are more failure prone/troublesome than the 530 and 540. Of course the 540 has its own wicked expensive timing chain issues. In my opinion, the 530i is the best car.

What he left out is VERY important. - i.e. If you're looking at a 540i and the seller has tried to make it an M5 clone, walk away. It has most likely been "ridden hard and put away wet". - Look for non factory M badging, loud exhaust, little tread on the rear tires, wearing cap on backwards ( boy racer alert) and lack of legit maintenance receipts. - it is now a parts car and you'll spend almost twice the purchase price just to drive it for a year.

delatroy E39 is a car you can love. And Im not being biased. These cars are over engineered. The angle and curves, the mathematics of the design. The symmetry. You feel like youre driving a car made for a head of state. The downside is, there do become serious mechanical issues. But these issues are easily dealt with if you check regularly. But become catastrophic when left unchecked. For example, I started the car after 2 months rest. If I had pressed the pedal more when it hesistated, it would have started normally. But since I didnt press the pedal (how would anyone know pressing pedals in starts isnt in any manual). The engine “drowned” on fuel. And I had to replace spark plugs, open the actual engine block, and engage in 3 days work costing $300. Own it if you can take care of it. If youre not ready for a commitment, a newer car would be better.
