BMW 530i (E60 - N52, N53) - rough idle, misfire, ignition coil replacement - DIY tutorial

Hello there,
this video show how I diagnosed problem with my car, which led to replacing one of the ignition coils (see my spark plug video replacement to learn how to strip the plastic bits (covers) from your engine).
The idle of the car was very rough, entire car shaking. It somehow doesn´t show very well in the video. The car was undriveable, lacking power and shaking.
I decided to check the coils firs, as it is rather easy to do. It is possible to do this without a scan tool, but it greatly reduces the guess work if you´ve got one.
It is a good practice to change all the coils, not just one. But as I am a bit short on cash at the moment, I only did the bad one.
Please note, I am not a professional and I do NOT guarantee this is the correct way to do this. Follow this tutorial at your OWN risk.

Thank you. It's one of the cheapest ones I could find, Konvey brand. But it shows all I need, live data as well. I needed transmission fluid temperature but it doesn't show that.

Hello! I have issue with my bmw f10 n53. I have rally bad coldstart. Engine works ok, but when i choose Drive, engine have misfires and can stop. Ista show any error :/ If i wait 10/20 seconds in Park, issue is smaller. Coils or injectors?

I had something similar to your problem. It was a vacuum leak. It was accompanied with reduced braking performance.

Hi! I have the same problems as you described. But only on cold starts, the car shakes and after a while check engine light appears. If i turn off the engine and restart it the problem dissapears and engine works fine. Could be te ignition coils?

Hi there. Sounds like missfires. Could be the plugs, coils, injectors... But it's most likely the coils. If you can, check the codes.

@@Alin_KIR If you manage to read the codes through OBD port, that helps a lot. In my case, the code was P0301. You can find the code explanation in the video.

i have a 523i 2007, and it have the engine light on. it notifi me that " engine fault: full engine power no longer available. Possible to continue journey. drive moderately...." So, what it can be ?

I had the same on my N53 330i, ended up initially being LPFP and HPFP… I’ve had Lambda sensors changed, plugs changed, cleaned the MAF, coils next then potentially injectors… BMW money pit 😩

@@andybrown5741 in my case, after it turn on that notifi, the Fan run on high speed. And i don't know what it can be. I'm waitting for the HPFP change on next monday. And i hope that can be the end for my car !

"Limp mode" can be caused by multiple issues. Professional scan tool should pin point the problem. Did you have the car diagnosed?

I replaced my spark plugs and coils because I was getting misfire codes and engine was shaking idling. Replaced both and problem still there. Any help please. 2010 535i rwd

This could be related to injectors or valves being clogged up with carbon.

@@DIYProjectX more I read about it I think it’s injectors. I tried the coils and didn’t make a difference. Still same codes and same misfire

@@Gabagoolll471 Affraid so. Try to find someone who does ultra sound cleaning. That is the cheapest option.

@@Gabagoolll471 Depends if you can take them out yourself or the shop has to do it. The cleaning itself should be about 20 pounds per injector. But this price is from a specialist who does nothing else.
