And of course no EU country has ever provided state subsidies to domestic car manufacturers. The only difference between China and EU or EU member countries is that China is doing it now, and the EU/EU members provided all sorts of subsidies pretty much since the end of WW2. Some of that might have been justifiable at the time to allow the European economy to recover from the aftermath of WW2 but it does not change the fact that the EU and/or EU member countries have provided billions in subsidies to domestic manufacturers over the years. If that makes the EU a bunch of hypocrites then so be it. For the sake of the EU consumer I hope the court action succeeds, but I am not that hopeful. I'd say it's almost common knowledge that it's a chinese company, specially because it's been out of the market for so long. I think the reason it's the most successful brand it's because they're one of the chinese brands that's established itself better and for longer time now. At least in my country most of the chinese brands are only now arriving, while mg has been here for more time. I.wonder what BYD can ship back to China on those big RoRo vessels. Perhaps agricultural machinery or containers of crushed pop can recycling. Or frozen containers of meat products. Or scrap copper. Or stop on the Ivory coast of Africa to pick up containers of raw ore like copper or lithium. This is the problem with one way trade. It is very inefficient to send ships back with no cargo.

Let’s put some balance in this that the Electric Viking side steps. Article from Nomura. Among emerging market economies, Turkey imposed a 40% additional tariff on imports of vehicles from China, while Brazil has reinstated import taxes on EVs this year. By contrast, Asia has not erected as many trade barriers against rising shipments from China, with its policy responses more subdued so far. This hands-off approach looks unsustainable, considering the challenges faced by Asia's economies from China's industrial overcapacity across product categories. At the low end of the spectrum, low-priced Chinese consumer goods are flooding into Thailand, Indonesia and South Korea, especially via e-commerce platforms. China's overcapacity and exports are squeezing domestic producers of metals and chemicals in India, Vietnam, Thailand and South Korea. Asia is also at risk from the knock-on effects of tariffs erected across the rest of the world. As the U.S. and Europe impose additional duties on Chinese EVs or Latin America levies tariffs on Chinese steel products, some of this additional supply is bound to be redirected to Asia.
