Nice tuto, just to add simplicity, it's not mandatory to disconnect the battery at this level because there is no check on roof if not operational. Also the pump is not fixed, you can lift it to easily remove the relays, just need a flat screewdriver to help remove it. In my case i opened the relays and cleaned the contacts, that's the failing part because of the "burning dust" of the sparks when it contacts. Keep going dude !

Great additional information and suggestions. You can lift the pump, but it seemed a lot easier to just remove that one screw to have full access to them. As far as the battery, I always like to take an extra step to be safe and not burn anything out in case a screw driver falls etc., but it makes sense that it’s not a live relay. Appreciate your feedback!

What are the symptoms if the part is failing? My top goes up fine but to go down it hesitates on the way down ( like a chameleon moves back and forth but still going the right direction)

There are no symptoms, that’s the scary part. When it fairs your pump will be in the state it was at the time. If it happens while it’s running it’ll continue to run until something happens.. as far as your issue, it sounds like it may be the hydraulic pump. Firstly, check to make sure the fluid level is not low.

Well the reason behind the argument for keeping the battery connected during all times is that the car can develop some rather strange electronic issues and/or error codes. This does apply to basically all newer cars. Obviously it does work to disconnect it but be aware that there is risk involved thats all Im saying.

I've wanted to install lower springs or coilovers, but the roads around me are really trash and I've slightly scraped the bottom a few times already. These stereos do not have a code as far as I know. I had mine disconnected for a month while swapping the engine and had no issues after. You may get some random codes if it's disconnected for a longer amount of time, but those are easily erasable with a scanner. Thanks for watching!
@edwardbuck16873 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for the video, what do the salmon coloured relays actually do? also do you need to re code the battery when you disconnect it? Thanks
@SimpleCarGuy3 жыл бұрын
The battery only needs to be coded and replaced with a new one. The salmon relay controls the hydraulic pump and if it fails while the pump is running it will cause it to overheat and seize or something of that nature. Those pumps are thousands of dollars and very difficult to access if the roof is down, so it just makes sense to replace them once your car gets up there in age.
@jorgesolis78974 жыл бұрын
Great video! You mentioned that you recommend changing these relays every five years?
@SimpleCarGuy4 жыл бұрын
Popular opinion says 4-5 years. Some people claim that if you clean the contacts and remove oxidation, you can go a little longer. In my opinion, if your car is older than 5 years, get it done soon and then again in 5 years.

Thanks for this very informative video along with your other videos, I'm now a subscriber. Here's a thought, when I receive my new relays I'm going to write the install date on the top with a sharpie so it will be known when they were last replaced. Question? Should the old working relays be saved as spares in case there is an unthinkable relay failure in the future?
@SimpleCarGuy4 жыл бұрын
Glad you found the video useful and welcome! I like the idea of writing the date when you replace it, I might go and do that on mine. You can absolutely keep the spares (I keep one in the car) and if the roof would ever get stuck or have any issues, it'd be the first thing I try. Thanks for watching!

@@SimpleCarGuy I just replaced the salmon relays and it went smooth as silk. Note: When tightening up the torx screw that secures the relays to the top of the pump housing do not over tighten, that housing is aluminum and over-tightening could crack the housing. I put the now spare relays (in case of an emergency while on the road) along with the torx 25 and a 1/4" box wrench in the little storage cubby on the left side of the trunk. I also included a note with the relays noting the date when they were changed out and also mentioned that they are both good working spares...

Thanks for the vid. Just wanted to check, does this relay issue go for all model years or just the earlier ones. I've got a 2014 E89 European model, would BMW have resolved this issue by 2014? Thank you in advance for any correct answers.
@SimpleCarGuy4 жыл бұрын
It's not like there is an issues with any of the systems, this is a preventative item that a lot of owners suggest doing. The relay fails like any other relay that can fail, the problem here is that if it fails as the roof is in operation, the motor will not stop running and burn out, costing you thousand to repair. As far as I know this is on all e89 models as all are using the same relay (3 series convertible are the same as well). Thanks for watching!

@SimpleCarGuy11 ай бұрын
I would definitely start with a replacing both relays to start with. That's be your cheapest and easiest fix. Then if you haven't yet, get a BMW scanner (I just reviewed a really good one, check it out) and scan the roof module. It should give you a code and bring you closer to the issue. If it's not very clear, go to live data on that module and look at hall sensors and microswitches. You should see stuff like 'clam shelf top' left and right (and many more). Make sure they are all operational. For example, if your left side says 'open', but the right side says 'closed'? You found your problem, one of those switches/hall sensors are bad or the wiring to that part is bad. I hope you get the idea. (I also have a video on how I find and fix wiring roof issues).

I can't say for sure, I'm not an expect. If the hydraulic pump engages, the relays are working correctly. This is more of a preventative item. In your case it sounds more like the hydraulic pump is going bad or it could be low on fluid.
