Thanks Dan! This really helped us fix the right rear microswitch on '09 Z4. We did all your steps to diagnose. We found the wire break a foot down the microswitch cable. Jumping the R/L switch signals together is a great idea and allowed us to open the roof to work on the switch wiring. Needle probes help the jump and for depinning. Lots of learning here!

Thank you 🙏. I had work on an E93 convertible this weekend that had an issue with the top coming completely down, Luckily after an investigation I was blessed with a simple fix. The person who owned the car packed the side of the boot with a large thick stack of napkins from a Christmas party. Compressing them was about 6-7 inches thick. I took them out of the boot and saw that it was a no luggage area. Woohoo fixed ! Thank you Dan for the trouble shooting video!!

When you got the roof open and started peeling that wire loom tape off, I was reminded of the failures on the E39 trunk wire loom. Myself and so many owners of that model have had to do repairs to that loom due to cracked and broken wires. I had to solder and shrink wrap 5 of those wires at one time. 1 brown was broken like in this video and 4 others that needed to be repaired as a preventative as they were gonna break in the future. In my case, the trunk release button on the key fob and trunk release button inside the car were not working, manually opening the trunk with the key was the only option. Peeling back the rubber gator that protects the wires under the trunk lid without cutting it was tricky, but I was successful and the repairs have held up for 8 years. I enjoy your videos, I like the BMW ones in particular, Thanks.
@dkostasx4 жыл бұрын
This is exactly the same what I have experienced and I know these issues have been since E34 and probably is still relevant for the newest models of 5 series. BMW just cannot learn from their mistakes or do this on purpose to increase servicing costs.

Nice video. I had a friend (long gone now) that I helped restore several Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliners some years ago. The cars have a system of large roof switches much like this BMW you worked on. The sensor switches are expected to carry a good amount of current to energize Ford type starter solenoids that would provide power to the gearmotors for the roof lifting mechanism. I used the same by-pass method to get the top open to find problems with the sensor switches. No computers, all was done with switch logic, a long series circuit from one switch to the next. Each switch would add more resistance to the circuit and sometimes would cause the solenoid not to pull in. Much fun working with old parts made back in the 1950s. Keep safe Dan.

Nice diagnosis! I freaking love the original schematics from BMW. So minimalistic but clear in contrary to some other brands and services offering schematics. It was also a nice touch that you confirmed your diagnosis and got it opened by bridging the left microswitch signal to the right o the module. I use similar techniques for diagnosing diversity antenna's on e61's and e91's, small (fused) wire between the positive battery terminal in the trunk and the first pin of the diversity antenna. if it responds to the key it's a wire break and if it does not it's the antenna, or possibly the CAS module not processing or somehow receiving the signal but i've never seen that happen before. anyway back to the roof, if someone was feeling less confident and adventurous they could just enable service mode through the service functions in ista or bidirectional control from a decent scan tool. then the roof will operate again without accounting for it's safety switches allowing you to open the trunk and get to the switch without unpinning wires ;)

At 03:37 you start to compare the switch signal with the known good right-hand side switch. I can see why you do this for this video. But the signal from the switch should be clear from the wiring diagram. But that is often unclear. How did they draw the circuit? Power off? Roof open? The roof between open and closed? Roof closed? They should draw a timing diagram of all the signals involved in an open-close sequence. Reminds me of TV repair manuals. They draw the voltages and signal waveforms for test points in the diagram for specified conditions. Sometimes the status of a switch is implied by the name: Roof panel 2 closed kind of tells you that the switch is activated (read closed) when the condition (Panel closed) is satisfied. Nice video!

I had a pain in the ass project car Z4 in the shop last summer. It was imported from Germany with malfunctioning roof. The roof was not working in the correct sequence. All the wiring to the CTM was redone and some guy used only one colour wiring. Took me a few days to find all the right data for that specific roof, test continuity, positioning and sensor parameters. Got it working a little more. At that point ISTA showed both roof shell 2 sensors in the wrong position. In my case the shell 2 sensors were in another spot (probably LCI vs pre difference, mine was 2008 model). Tricked them into correct position for ISTA but the roof was still operating in the wrong order. Tried reprogramming the CTM, disassembled the hydraulic pump, lines, cylinders, compared it to the hydraulic schematic and everything was good. At that time I was stomped and realized that the customer will never pay me the hours I've worked on this machine and I was at a standstill, I was looking for a replacement CTM, but it's expensive and difficult part to find. Also I had other cars waiting and job were piling up. So we shook hands, he gave me 300€ (extremely cheap) for checking out the wiring and hydraulics and we parted ways. Few weeks after, a friend from the dealership called me asking for advice unknowing that I've already worked on the car. They couldn't find the problem also and last I heard, they changed the entire convertible top on that car. Any thoughts?

HI Dan, love your videos, being a autoelectrician here in the UK, I am always searching for wiring diagrams, especially ones that are actually accurate. May I ask where you source your diagrams, and can you post where I can purchase them from. Keep up the good work and excellent videos, stay safe....Steve
