I saw the podcast you did with this legend that is Steve Saxty on The Drive Torque Podcast with PetrolPed and that was an awesome video. I'd urge the viewers to watch if they haven't already. Getting 2 episodes on your channel is also special. A greatly talented guy. I've learnt so much about design of cars and BMW design especially and its so interesting. Thank you Joe 🎉

Interesting to see some design elements from the older cars make their way back into the current line-up (e.g. iX / 4 series grille). What strikes me most is that the large vertical grille on the Nagashima 7 series works and integrates reasonably well with the whole front end. Don't see that same care and detail in the modern designs...

New or old designs...i love BMWs
@ay89872 ай бұрын
Imagine if they used the old designs as inspiration for modern BMW's. These new ones have been appallingly horrendous in design and details considering BMW's excellent and unique design history.

Highly informative video. But l thought it was Frank Stephenson that designed the BMW X5. He said he sketched while flying on the private jet that was taking him to the BMW HQ meeting.

Can Steve enlighten us about the difference between a cabriolet and a drop head coupe? I once heard that they are not the same, and I don't necessarily mean a folding metal roof, A la SLK... What was the Triumph stag if it was not a Targa?
@stevesaxty46452 ай бұрын
TBH the terms are interchangeable - sort of. A convertible fabric or metal roof could be used on a sports car, SUV (think Murano, Evoque) or coupe while Drophead Coupe is a term applied to (you guessed it) a coupe. The DHC term was one we alighted on during the Rolls-Royce project I worked on as having a slightly more noble, British demeanor. Targa on the other hand tends to mean a roof with removable panels but the current 911 Targa uses the word for a folding (metal) roof but that's all Porsche branding, like using "Turbo" on an EV.

@stevesaxty4645 Thank you for that Steve. Do you think there is an argument to re-engineer design classics like the E30 absolutely precisely in appearance, ( not a modern interpretation like the Mini or Renault 5 ) in electric or hydrogen form to offset the invasion of Chinese Electric Cars. I'm thinking I would rather buy a perfectly identical electric BMW E30 than a BYD Dolphin for example. Or does modern crash testing make that impossible? I can never understand why car companies produce cars that everyone lust after in such small numbers ( The Jaguar continuation cars ) when the whole point of making cars is to sell them in large numbers and not just pander to the whims of the billionaire collectors. VW did a great job with the modern beetle, if only Mercedes and BMW did the same....
@stevesaxty46452 ай бұрын
I think the answer is there in your question maybe? You certainly can’t bring back an old body shell into production and meet crash regs. Plus, it hardly sends a sign of confidence in one’s own current product. Much as I love the oldies I’d take a modern 3Series over an E46 for daily use. What’s interesting is where some like Mini and Renault 5 can work today while other retromods are duds leaning on a name as a prop

Such an interesting video… and sensitive touch point for BMW .. 🤣😂😅 ❤ current design ethos is nothing more than shocking. Even Frank Stephenson has given them some serious criticism.
@unowen-nh9ov2 ай бұрын
BMW haven't been expanding for 60 years by repeating themselves, Stephenson did nothing new, tall 5er & bringing Mini into this century, i3 & i8 were NEW.

God, if only the actual 3.0 CSL homage car looked *anything* like that render. The real CSL homage looked awful, just a G82 with a tacked on body kit and slightly different front bumper. A non-spoiler version of that render is what the current M4 *should* have looked like, 100%.

If only so much BMW design wasn’t catered towards Chinese tastes. There are some beautiful cars mixed with some absolute pigs.
