I just did this just replacement, and it's pretty straight forward with the right tools. 1st trick- remove the idler arm from the car frame (1 bolt/nut) and swing it out of the way keeping it attached to the drag link. 2nd trick- remove passenger side pre cat. o2 sensor, this gives your hand a lot more room removing/installing top bolt. 3rd trick-2 long extensions, swivel socket, E12 tori, and a impact gun to remove the bolt on the top. "Disclaimer", don't use impact gun when reinstalling any of the two bolts initially. You will need to thread in both bolts first by hand, tighten the bottom bolt fully, then you can use a 40ft/lbs impact to get bolt fully seated (top bolt). Next ighten the top bolt down further with a breaker bar, get torque specifications from BMW/Haynes Manual (Very Important).

how long did it take you? Mine just failed lol. What did you find was the hardest part?
@MrDjconquest5 жыл бұрын
@@RAYTHYuen it took 2 hours, while taking my time. With the tips I left in my comments above it's a lot easier then anticipated.

@@MrDjconquest thank you for your tips. how many torque did you use? I have a torque wrench but it's too large to be used in that cramped space likely...also did you put any silicone or anti-rust grease on the screws?

Great video. I was able to replace my starter on my 98 740il with the help of your video. Remove nuts for both heat shields and slide them to the side. Then remove nuts to wiring. The lower torx holding starter is easily accessible. The other one you can't see but I was able to get my left finger tips to touch the head of the bolt so that I could then guide my ratchet to it. It's not easy but with your flexible socket extension, you can do it.

Bimmermerchant, great video. I appreciate all the time you have invested in creating your videos. They have really helped me and many others out. These videos have saved me thousands of dollars by helping me fix things myself instead of paying the outrageous prices at BMW or local mechanic shops. I am doing this on my 1991 e34 535i and will be saving myself $1300.

Thanx for the video helped me a lot knowing where the bolts were. A little tip for others turn youre wheels to point left makes for a little more room with the e39.

One of the harder tasks is locating the bolts so you are half way done. Just make sure to disconnect the battery, you don't want sparks flying and make sure car is not hot. Straight forward task. Good luck and let us know how it went.

it actually went better than i expected....that top bolt is a real pain in the butt to get out but i did...the only problem i ran into is that the site where i ordered the new starter sent me the wrong one so...my e38 is just sitting there waiting for the correct starter to come.

Hey I need your help, Hoping you might reply, So my 2001 bmw x5 4.4 wont start or crank. I was told it was the starter but after buying a new one, going through the replacement process, I tried to start my car and still nothing. No crank. The lights, radio, and AC all come on but no crank or start even after replacing the starter.

Thats not good. Retrace your steps and see if maybe you forgot to connect something back on. Check the CCV diaphram and make sure you connected everything.

wouldn't the starter be the same as a 95 740il... without the wires hanging from it tho, because the 95 those wires come from the wiring harness
