BMW E39 V8 M62TU Valve Cover Gasket Replacement & Restoration!

The rocker cover gaskets on these cars are a weak point and if you own one, there is a good chance you will have oil leaks coming from this area of the engine. This procedure will be the same for all M62 engines including e38 7 series, e39 5 series, e53 x5, e31 8 series and P38 Range Rovers.

I started with an e53 x5 4.4L m62 then bought an e39 m5. Never worked on the e53 but loved the m5 enough to ultimately amass a comprehensive catalogue of stubby ratchets and learned. I saved a ton of money doing my own preventative maintenance along with pride in my newfound self agency. As i ween off my rookie phase of stubby ratchets and m6 collar nuts, i look forward to 1/2 in. long handled flex heads and 24mm deep impact sockets when i start working on guibos & subframe/diff mount bushings. Looking good, I did mine a few months back. An easy way to remove the injector clips/boxes is to just pull up on them with a bit of force and they all just unclip nicely. The worst part of this job was cleaning all the old RTV off the half moons at the back lol

I've removed injector clips the easy way... Pull up the whole things. Takes like 5 seconds. Not lost clips and done. Done it heaps on a few different motors...never any issue. To put back on. Push it back on.. mentioned on another comment too. Covers looks wicked

I know this is 3 years old but it's still a great video. To the folks that say just pull up the boxes with force, that is not wise with 20 year old plastic. I broke two of the injector plugs and damaged some wiring doing that.

Cam covers and I believe the oil pan are magnesium alloy. In fact I think the block is as well.

Just a little note-an easy way to remove the electric boxes on top of the coils is to obviously undo the 2 nuts holding them in place, grab them with both hands and sharply pull up hard and it will pop right off the injectors. Just try to pull as straight up as possible. Feels harsh and barbaric, but I have done it numerous times with no adverse effects. I can't "own" this trick, saw someone on the web do it a few years ago. Give it a go!

@@technik333 That is my point! It doesn't hurt them at all. The sharp pull releases them and MUCH easier than prying on them.

Thanks for the tip, that makes sense. I did give them a pull and the whole box was flexing and it looked like sh*t was going to start breaking but admittedly I didnt jerk it really aggressively (in fear of breaking something) so that must be what it needed. Cheers!

I got the passenger side done on mine finally, instead of pulling off the fuel line I just taped some cardboard over the metal end fittings so I didn't scratch off the fresh paint ( after scratching it off and repainting!) The drivers side is going to be a bigger job tho, super charger off and relocated ABS block.. needs to be relocated back out of the way!

Put a .7mm washer under those bolts to press down the valve cover further :)

@@ZeroTo60Tube This comes from understanding a few things: - The valve cover rubber bushing leaks - The valve cover isn't compressing the rubber bushing enough - And the bolt bottoms out, just just after pressing the valve cover down Knowing this, you can find your solution :) Press the valve cover down further by use of the bolt by decreasing the amount it has to go down before it presses down the valve cover. We should try to share this style of thinking with others. To understand how things work first, even things as small as bolts. When we do - We become geniuses!

i got the m62 with out vanos i removed the mechanical fan to put a volvo one from a 850 turns on at 103c and stops at 91c got the 88c thermostat

Very cool post. Sort of an unrelated question, but on the topic of rocker cover gaskets... any recommendations for applying gasket goo to an N54 rocker cover gasket? And if so, where in your experience would you recommend applying it? I've only heard that the genuine BMW gasket shouldn't need any sealant, but personal experience suggests otherwise.

The N54 doesnt need any sealant because there are plenty of bolts all close to each other and no big gaps like these M62s that dont have any bolts across the rear at all. Andrew did say that often the N54 valve covers do get small cracks because they are plastic and if there are any tiny cracks it wont torque down properly and will weep oil even with a new gasket so youve got to be careful of that with those plastic valve covers.

The magnesium casting on these things is rough as guts. I did mine with some high temp goldish paint trying to emulate the factory look to no avail. Good to see some older BMW content on the channel, if I were you I'd steal your brother's M62B46 and put it in your 540i hahahah.

Thanks for sharing the instruction and close-up video shots on undo the injector clips, I think that's the hardest part of replacing the rocket cover gasket due to the restrictive space around the engine bay to remove each cover. What sealant do you use for the gasket if you don't mind me asking?

I have a threebond gasket sealant. Seems to work well. A few people have mentioned in the comments you should be able to pull those clips straight off (just like when you push them on, but in reverse obviously). I did give these a good pull because I thought that would make sense as well but they weren't budging and I thought I must be tripping so ended up pulling them all off individually.. but next time will give it a more serious pull!

The valve covers are very expensive for a brand new one. They are hard to find 2nd hand in Australia but I do see them pop up for sale in America so if you're over that way just keep an eye on marketplace for them. There are links in the description for all the parts I used but they are all for the TU model. If you have a first generation M62 you will need different gaskets and they don't use the bolts at the front either

I whish the N62 in my X5 had bolts to hold down the ignition coils. Some coils are so loose and I cant figure out why. No matter how hard I push them down, I can still pull some of them out with my pinky. I tried both Bosch ang NGK with same results.

It is weird how the newer models are just a press fit. But that is strange you cant get them to seat tightly. Have they had oil leaking on to them from the rocker cover? could have flogged the rubber out a bit maybe?
