Looks great! I have a 2000 740IL with 39,000 miles on it. I'll be doing my valve covers soon. The problem with painting magnesium is that if off gases. That is what causes it to bubble and flake off. It must be deoxidized and pretreated first. Degrease it with an alkaline cleaner, apply a chromic acid treatment and then neutralize the acid. If you use a zinc chromate paint and primer you will get results that last. This is why powder coaters steer away from coating magnesium.

My son’s mom owns a 2005 BMW 545i with the 4.4 liter N62 V8 and I’m doing the valve cover gaskets and upper timing chain cover gaskets along with a bunch of other things. The valve covers in her car do not come off this easily. Being a smaller car than the 7 Series means that her 545i has a smaller engine bay and a much tighter fit. It took me an hour just to remove all the beauty covers, air boxes, filters, strut brace and other miscellaneous items just to get to the point of actually starting to remove the valve cover. Then you have the oil dipstick and fuel line in the way not to mention the Valvetronic motors and ignition wiring harness etc. I enjoy working on cars but BMW’s have proven to be challenging for someone who is not familiar with them.

This is a wrong primer to use. First layer for metals like aluminium, magnesium, zinc covering has to be acid primer and nothing else. These metals known to oxidise in the atmosphere very cuickly, the acetone that you have used for degreasing did took some of the oxidation, but also did get back after u finished degreasing. This is why high penetraing primer on an acid base has to be used. Your "hight temp" primer is on alkid base and will fell off shortly. Right technology for magnesium valve covers would be - acid primer, then acryl primer (because u cannot put a paint directly over acid primer), then high temp paint.

Ah thank you! Finally someone who knows how to prep magnesium for paint. Few questions: is there any difference when using 2k paints and possibly not spray cans. I mean, can i spray 2k paint over that acid primer without the acryl primer? Is any acid primer good enough, ie spray can version from a cheap store? Can i do acid primer, then 2k epoxy primer, then 2k final coat or is the acid primer 1k and starts to boil the other layers?

Awesome job w the valve covers. I never knew they were actually silver from the factory. Every one i have ever seen had the color like when you took them off. BTW, i would imagine powdercoaters dont like doing magnesium because of the process. Powdetcoating is electrely charged. Its probably something with the metallurgy that powdercoating doesnt stick to magnesium as well.

Silver was just way too widely used by bmws id this time so I’m sick of them to say the least but they do always look clean I’ll give them that much haha. And Thank god it has the black interior too and not that ugly grey lol. The silver pops it’s so well maintained but I’ve noticed that with many of the silver bmws of this era like even my 97 artic silver m3 had amazing paint but with way more miles than this baby ! It could have to do with the way it reflects the suns damage off the paint isn’t as bad as some of the darker colors 🤷🏼♂️

@jacksmith23152 жыл бұрын
Its not so much the mileage as it is how well it was taken care of. Just because a care has low miles doesnt always mean it was very well taken care of. Especially if it sat a lot. A car with low miles that sat for years is worse off than a car with higher mileage that was well-maintained and taken care of.

About the date on the filter. Just like with so many things Murica is the only country, at least in the west that does the middle-endian format with the date. That is in the rest of the world we either start with the year first and end with the day which is what was on the air-filter which means it was from 2006 as this is the standard international date format that businesses use a.k.a. big-endian format or the little-endian beginning with day and ending with year which is more often used informally by humans not in organizations if I’m to be believed. The more you know right 🤓. My favorite 7-series chassi for sure so nice to see it get a new life. A bit jealous of whoever bought it.

Question. Aftermarket parts that are not the cheap ones, worth using in the 740s?
@jacksmith23152 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you're doing, manufacturer, and where you get them. There are some very good quality aftermarket parts for bmw, there are also some junk ones, just like every car. Bmw is more picky, especially with electrical/electronics. Ive seen even new tail light and turn signal bulbs work but keep the warning lights on because the voltage or resistance was just a tiny bit different than OEM. They're picky cars for sure. Suspension is another thing. You dont want to take away the smooth ride of a bimmer. Thats very easy to do with inferior parts. Lemfordore, meyle are some good ones that are aftermarket but also make OEM for bmw so you can save money getting the same part just wo the bmw logo on it.

That is not 30k miles...no way. If the valve solenoid gaskets are that baked and cracked there is no way that engine is only 30k. Btw nice work. I did the same thing on my 2002 540i. @@JamiesGarage1 That is still hard to believe...Ok at 30k. Have you worked on the valley pan yet? At 30k..The valley pan should be spotless clean. You may want to stick one of those inspection cameras since removing all the intake manifold junk takes forever. You should not see any oil or antifreeze. Only a bit of dust/sand. If you see a mix of oil and antifreeze and sand you have a tampered car...if you see that somewhat clean...you got yourself an awesome unbelievable deal don't drive it lol.
