Thanks for the video. My cabin fan's issue is that it will not blow consistently so even when I have it on the lowest setting it will blow from max to min sporadically. The other (more important) issue is that it will actually stay on after the car is turned off and potentially until it kills my battery. Do you think this is more likely an issue with the resistor or the blower motor itself? Thanks again!

I’m having this problem atm in my e46 but I got a new blower motor and a new resistor but it blows air but not at all’s speeds it’s takes me like 20 mins in the morning for the windshield to defog and it’s I’m also in need for the ac for this summer heat waves! If you know anything that would be helpful, please let me know. Thanks !

This DIY is kind of a pain due to having to poke your head down there near some sharpish parts, it's very hard to see what you're doing. I lost a screw and was not able to get the new FSR clip attached; there were only two screws when I took it out so I'm down to one, but it seems secure. I also broke the metal tab on the lower tray of the glovebox putting it back together 😞 But thanks for the DIY it works now!

The most difficult part of this was definitely that little grommet behind the plastic tab. It was really hard to try and set the grommet so you could get the tab pressed. I had to use a trim tool to wedge in between the plastic tab and push the grommet up and out of the way at the same time...very difficult. After that, it was just a matter of wiggling the FSR out. You're the best, thank you.

Thanks Jason. I didn't know that part existed until it failed. You did solve my problem, but I darn near craned my neck getting my big head in there! Note. It's a misnomer to Call it a resistor. It's a module with an I.C. inside able to communicate HV/AC dash control via CANBUS . Who knows why BMW made a simple thing so complex ..but it is what it is. It is the IC inside that gave out in my case. its covered with potting compound. For the curious you can dig out the compound and see the components for yourself. Anyway you saved me a ton of effort. Watched your awesome DIY, purchased the part from ECS, and just finished the FSR swap. Wiggling the old one out, and getting the new one in far enough for the tab to engage was not fun. I found it easier to remove the footwell cover by sliding it rearward so the two plastic tabs released and then the whole piece could be rotated toward the rear and then the metal clip behind the center console slid out.

Extremely well done video. It’s not an easy job, the resistor is a bear to get out. I lost a screw between the carpet and transmission tunnel never to be seen again. I saw the BavAuto video on this, very same part, on the X5. It does not use the two T-20 screws in that application, only the spring tab. The implication is that this is suspenders-and-belt engineering and that the two screws or at least one of them is superfluous and if they are extremely difficult to re-install, the world probably would not end if they are left out and only the spring clip relied upon to hold the unit in position. Where would it go?

Nice DIY video for replacing the blower motor resistor for BMW 330i 2001 model. The problem of my car BMW 330i 2001, when i started the engine and run the AC to high for a few minutes, and after few minutes i did try to reduce to medium but still running on high and i keep reducing to low nothing changed, when i switch-off the engine the AC motor still running, so I started my car again so as not to drain the battery and drove to my friend's place who is a mechanic, he switch off the engine to diagnose it, but still the same the AC motor is still running even the engine is already switch off, so he disconnected the battery, and removed the grove box out and remove the fuse while awaiting the replacement parts that we are going to order.

I think it's good to point out that if your air is not blowing at all, and you don't know what it is. JUST because you feel a little air while driving, doesn't mean that it's working. So if you feel a little air when driving down the freeway, or faster than 20mph, but otherwise while sitting still it doesn't blow at all... Your FSR is bad. So replace it, with the help of this video.

The first thing anyone needs to do before they do anything else is make sure the electrical connections are sound. I have had this problem several times and what I do is attain the required access to the connections and afterwards disconnect and spray with electrical cleaner, then I reconnect them. Obviously, this may not be the problem, but, since you have to do most of what I just explained anyway, might as well eliminate that a potential cause. I'm not sure what would cause this except to guess that some sort of "lacquering" occurred. But, as I said, this has happened several times with me (and on different E46's).
