I've just done this job and you don't have to remove the chrome strip. However, take care when removing the two black plastic 'pins' that hold the B pillar interior trim on,at the botton. If they drop down they are a pig to recover from behind the rear trim without mechanical fingers! I would also suggest heating with a hair dryer the plastic cone shaped cover that is released to un pop the window opener arm at the back edge...they become very brittle with age...

Really great....I learned a lot tks. BTW you don't have to remove the chrome strip or the 2 screws at the very rear of the window in the track. Once the push rod from motoer assembly back is loose , you can loosen the 2 bolts in b column and slide window straight towards the a column. Out it comes!!

I'm not sure you have to remove all that to get the window out. Just the B-pillar panel and window fasteners. Not surrounding trim (chrome list) etc. I'm gonna try on mine..

How is the Button (Cover Cap) attached to the window ? It looks like a large C-Clip ? Can you explain ? My cover caps are corroded and I want to take them off and paint. Do you need to remove the whole piece that passes through the glass, or does the Cover Cap simply pop off ?

Simon blue try using a retractable rod with a magnet at the end. you can find this tool in most auto parts store.

M3 models share similar exterior and interior parts with other e46 coupe models. New OEM parts from dealership are somewhat expensive. Personally, I would rather purchase used OEM than Cheap aftermarket new parts.
