To everyone regretting their purchase of an E46/M54 after watching this video... these are great cars and the maintenance outlined here isn't so bad. You've found this channel already so consider yourself lucky, 50sKid will hold your hand, kicking and screaming through the big scary Vanos repair, remind you about potential catastrophic failures and you just have to follow instruction. If that's too much work for you there's a used Honda with 250k miles and 12 cupholders calling your name.

is that true for any variant, im looking at a 2000 e46 320i. i see its pretty low in power on paper but i hear what an amazing experience it is to drive them regardless of that HP number. Im hesitant because i already expect reliability to be a sure cost, i dont want power to be another (necessary cost)

@@orlandoperera1403 when I got mine, I was told to make sure I get the 3 Litre and glad I did. I haven’t driven the 2000, but drove the 328 generation after mine and didn’t like the power. My advice is the same, 3.0 at the minimum and if you can go to a later 335, even better. They are pretty reliable if you maintain them but no, they are not as reliable as something like a Toyota. Hey John et al... The50'sKid is AWESOME, and is extremely informative. Every car has it's drawbacks, and quite frankly I believe that the E46 is one of the best BMW's ever built. Like everything, it's how it's been taken care of, both daily driving and basic interval maintenance. Also, how many miles you pound on a car will be a big factor. I bought my 2002 BMW 330ci New, as a second "fun car"... not a daily driver. Other than one battery and tires every 35K I didn't have to do anything to my BMW for 13 years! At the ripe age of 13, and 110K miles, I replaced the valve cover gasket that had begun to leak. While I was at it (nothing had broken) as a preventative move I replaced the water pump, thermostat, belts, and tensioners. That's it!! I love my BMW... they are relatively easy to work on (you can actually reach everything under the hood.. try doing that on most cars!) and if you can learn (watch The50'sKid!) to take care of the basics yourself they are a great car to own! My BMW is now 17, and going strong! I'm going to replace all the "rubber" under the hood (vacuum related parts) soon as a preventative move, but at 17 years old how can I complain! Enjoy and embrace your E46! Finally, My many THANKS to The 50's Kid... your vids are the best! Keep them coming!!

Great video. I bought a 2005 320i last year as a second car to replace my winter beater. It was my first Beemer so I was waiting for the sky to fall, as some would say, with all the horror stories of expensive repairs these cars require. At this point, I should mention that we operate an auto repair shop, and work on most makes. We chose to address almost every point you've indicated in this video. Easy to work on, and parts can be found at many places besides the dealer. Another thing about the E46 cars, they're probably the last models that you can fix most issues by yourself.

Great car to drive, easy to work on if you familiarize yourself with each individual component and how they play their part in the overall engine bay. Lots of instructional resources available online to learn from. The one question that BMW will refuse to answer for all time, and I know it's from their finance dept not so much the engineering dept, is why the HELL do they keep using plastic on a lot of their critical components. Thermostat housing, water pump propeller, valve covers, pulleys, radiator necks and frame, expansion bottle, timing chain guides, etc...really!!!??? Bought my ‘04 330ci last year. Slowly did basic stuff and the more I learn the more I do. Selling my fun and expensive weekend car soon and then I will be dumping a shit ton of money into the e46 making it like new. I’m excited to get this car amazing and make it better than new. Once it’s perfect I plan to wrap, wheels, and redo the entire interior. It’s going to be a fun journey. May try to make videos since a lot of this stuff will be done often since parts are too expensive compared to my other car (brand new Mach 1) enjoy this little old car so much 🙌🏼

Great video as always. Other trouble points - frequently damaged vapor barriers (often by rushed techs fixing the window regulators which as mentioned often go out); when torn or not sealed properly, these will allow water intrusion into the cabin carpet. Corroded bulb receptacles that cause replacement bulbs to flicker and / or burn out rapidly. The tensioner and pulleys on the belts also seem to go out frequently with annoying squealing until they’re replaced.

The E46 is a great car, but it is an enthusiast car. They are extremely high quality automobiles, but there's always a cost for performance. This guy has a working knowledge not many others have, so don't let that scare you. If you are conscientious and with a little knowledge - owning an E46 is a joy and can be a car that will return a lengthy service life.

I recommend FCP Euro for your BMW parts. They offer a lifetime warranty on everything they sell. ECS Tuning can also be a decent option. Personally I avoid Amazon for parts. Also for your PCV kit I recommend getting the cold weather kit even if you don’t live in a typically cold area as the hoses and valve have insulation on them which helps protect them from degradation and condensation.

Hey man, I actually credit you to much of my early knowledge of BMW's and the passion for the car and the amazing engineering put into them. SAYING THAT, I'm positive I've seen this video before but with a novice at best knowledge of bmw, now watching it as a master bmw mechanic, I have to say you severely undersold the issues and consequences that the c.c.v. can and does pose. I've worked on thousands of BMW's now, from simple tune ups to suspension, all the way to building and setting up full race cars. The 1st and best mod you could ever do for any series BMW is to sh#t can the ccv and install a quality emissions approved catch can. I've seen 100's of bmw motors completely dry sumped with not 1 drop of oil frying multiple cylinders pistons and rings, on 3 series, 5 series, 7 series.. all of them my 1st bmw is a 318 I. Still have it and bringing it back to life , very fun car to drive, but my first love was my 2nd bmw it was only an 06 328I but I fell in love with that car. I had it for 2 months went though everything replaced the entire cooling system and basically preformed the most intense tune up you could imagine, vaccuum boots and hoses, valve cover gaskets after 2 months and close to a well spent grand. I left my shop with fresh oil all fluids perfect, she was ready, I went out on a date that night and drove 38 miles only to show up at our destination with no oil left in the car. It was night and tinted windows so didnt see any smoke until I refilled the oil but it was too late, without wanting to believe the motor was fried I chased down every Avenue including even replacing the valve seals with the head still on the car, thanks to you and your videos though I must say you would probably tell me to Patten the spring compression tool I made , modeled off the one you through together in your video but,, much refined, down to even have a semi closed compartment but still an open face enough to easily reinstall, with a strong magnet in it to collect the keepers. But alas the engine was completely toast ... I can not stress enough. Catch can is the only logical solution, not many people even skilled mechanics want to or actually will change the ccv every 2 years. Ccv bad bad bad. Very dynamic concept but so was the 2barrel carburetor on a big block v8 but just didnt work well.. I'll stop taking up space here. Take care and keep wrenching bro

Thanks for the great overview. As a 50s kid myself, I enjoy working on our two E46 325xi. Just replaced the fuel pump in my wife's E46 and it quit about three days later. Bummer. After checking everything else, the ffuel pressure only rose 1 or 2 lbs on power on. Hmmm. Removed the fuel pump to find the outlet hose had slipped off of the stub on the housing. Re-attached and put a clamp on it. Original did not have a clamp. Live and learn. it is a happy car now. Thanks for your great videos, I am slowly chewing my way through all of them.

On the engine, i also frequently see the evap purge valves go bad on the m54 (also in the early z4), this is in front of the the ccv and up a bit, the cheaper ebay ones work fine. On the back end, diff bush and rtab bushes are almost always shot (both the outer rear bushes should also need doing at this point). I would also replace the fuel filter, its such a simple job, but everyone ive done has never been changed and was full of crud. Finally the heater final stage resistor is also fairly common to go bad, again the ebay ones appear to work fine as a cheaper replacement.

50sKid Doh thought of another one i discovered shortly after, the gas cap, well the gas cap oring, mine went bad, and i suspect this is what kills the evap purge valve. Due to a fault code, i had to replaced mine, but occasionally she would still throw a fault code, if i remember diffident code to the evap code, swapped on a gas cap from a scrap mini and fault code never came back. I did read on the forums the gas cap oring is also a frequent issue, but as i said i think if its left uncheck it then takes the evap purge valve out if not fixed.

Your delivery is excellent and as well the camera work is top quality - in focus and pointed at just the right angles to frame exactly what you are describing. As a 2000 E46 330i, 140,000km sedan owner/maintainer for 8 years I have experienced many of your pattern failures. Have changed my HVAC resistor but unlike your LHD version, mine's an Australian right-hooker so had to work around the steering wheel side to get at it. Not the easiest job I've done on it and hope not to have to do it again. Keep up the great work.

I just picked up a 210,000 mile 2003 M3 6 speed standard for 3,500 bucks and this is the exact info I was looking for the car drives and motor feels wonderful, I found an Oil leak so far might be Valve cover, and Lets just say the car is going to be sitting until I can get around to changing and doing all these things you suggested. the only other issue is that the park brake does not work well I think the Linkage needs adjusting and the other issue I am having is that when im driving the car sometimes beeps from the dash and sometimes the right turn signal indicator on the dash will flash red, sometimes left, sometimes both. I'm in North Dakota and its really cold here right now and I have read about the the beeper going off to indicated freezing temps. From my experience, every vehicle you buy used, needs this level of preventative maintenance. No matter the make or model, people abuse their cars, they don't follow the rules, so it's a wise decision to commit $1500.00 to servicing a used vehicle when you buy it. Yes you end up sinking in a bunch of money, but it'll still cost you less than purchasing a new vehicle.
