Hey 50's kid, I did repair quite a lot in the past until like 6 years ago. Ever since I slowly just lost passion and interest and got tired of it, mainly by depression and shit. Just recently I slowly picked up again after starting watching most of your vids, binging them for hours and did most common M54 repairs on my E60. I can not wait until my parts arrive to overhaul my vanos unit. Your vids take the frustration out and are satisfying to watch. The camera angles are great and you provide them little details, so thank you for all these video's. I hope you will continue as you are one of the better sources to share knowledge.

One of the best DIY videos I've seen for e46 work. I believe the T30 torx screws that hold the vanos pistons to the cam shaft are designed to "stretch" when torqued down, so it is not recommended to reuse them. That is why they come in most rebuild kits.
@mr.recruiterp35832 жыл бұрын
Yes, one snapped on me. Did you hand tighten them? I used my torque wrench set at 6 ft lbs but it must be off because it snapped one of them Waiting on two new ones.

Thanks for all of your DIY videos and advice! My 2001 330i with 230K miles appeared to be on its last legs. I looked up check engine light codes, fixed a couple of things, but still wasn't able to pass VA inspection. Took it to a reputable shop and they said I needed a new Vanos for $2500. With your videos, I was able to methodically work through the repair myself and passed inspection on Fri. Great video, it really helped out in preparing for the job. Just finished doing this on my 328Ci. I replaced the exhaust cam sensor first, then tested it before replacing the Vanos (replaced with an improved O-ring one). Actually I seemed to get more improved performance from just changing the sensor than the whole Vanos. Changing both is definitely something I would recommend if the car seems down on power. Anyway changing the Vanos cured rough idle, cured a power surge that used to occur around 3000 RPM, and improved the gas mileage. Well worth the 3-4 hours I spent in the garage!

One thing needs to be said about this. THIS WAS EXCELLENT. I done this very thing 1 month ago. My Exhaust Camshaft Sensor went bad. When went to change it the Allen head bolt stripped out.. needless to say THE ONLY way I could change it was to take the valve cover off, and the VANOS completely off like in this video. While I was in there I rebuilt everything. BUT one thing I would recommend when you go to change your Camshaft Position Sensor go get a BOLT and replace it with the same Allen bolt you take out to get the sensor off. This way you have a bolt head to grab onto, instead of an allen head it will prevent a major headache in the future if your sensor ever fails and your allen head strips out like mine did. SOOOO I prepared myself for the future incase it ever failed again Ive got a regular 10mm bolt to take off now instead of the OEM Allen head bolt. Just my .02 cents.

8:55 you can use painters masking tape for that :) the ones that have folded foil/shield attached to the tape. Simply attach the band to the engine and stuff around it and then unfold the foil/shield over all the parts you want to have clean. You can throw a rag or multiple tissues onto that installation of yours so the unwanted oil won't run down the foil but rather stick to the fabric for easier removal of excessive oil :)

*If anybody is interested into all the correct torque specs on this DIY here is a list of them (it is german since my personal offline copy of the OEM TIS is in german but you can copy and paste the whole text into Google to translate it to whatever language you need):* NOTE 1: If your engine model is not listed then that specific line does not apply to you NOTE 2: torque and degree means you torque it first and then you continue turning/tightening but not by torque but by angle starting from where the torque ended NOTE 3: TIS mentions that you should fixate both wheels prior to removing the VANOS unit to eliminate the posibility of the camshaft to jump off the correct place. Two pins that you lock in place through a hole on each side once you turn your engine one or two times so that each of the 1st camshaft noses are looking towards themselves in a triangle shape way (meaning they both look above each other in a somewhat 40 degrees or bit lower angle). Automatic cars will have a second hole close looking similar to the one that is ment to be used so do not use that one for fixating. TIS also mentions to use a compressed air adapter to push out unwanted oil through a "service hole" and test compression (meaning if there is a leak) but you can skip that part. There is a special tool to fix both camshafts in position (part nr. 113240), you can get it in a local store but it should cost about 50-60 USD tops. If it costs above 100 USD look elsewhere. But you can also skip that part and hope nothing happens :) in most cases you are golden if you don't touch anything while the VANOS is off and it is the only thing you take off at that moment. Meaning the chains and other bolts holding the camshaft stay where they are and the VANOS seals are your only job at this time. 1AZ 4/2 Wege-Ventil/Magnetventil an VANOS-Gehäuse M52 / M52TU / M54 / M56 / S52 / S50US / M50 / VANOS 30 Nm 2AZ Hohlschraube an VANOS-Verstelleinheit M52 / M52TU / M54 / M56 / S52 / S50US / M50 / VANOS M14 x 1,5 32 Nm 3AZ Verschlussschraube an VANOS-Verstelleinheit M52 / M52TU / M54 / M56 / S52 / S50US / M50 / VANOS M22 x 1,5 50 Nm 4AZ Linksgewinde: Passschraube für Hydraulikkolben an Zahnwelle M52TU / M54 / M56 M6 10 Nm 5AZ Hydraulik-Leitung für VANOS an Ölfilter-Aggregateträger M52 / M52TU / M54 / M56 / S52 / S50US / M50 / VANOS 32 Nm 6AZ Bundmutter an Zahnwelle S50 M6 9 Nm 7AZ Deckel an VANOS-Verstelleinheit (Hydraulikkolben-Einlassseite) S50 M5 5 Nm 8AZ Filterschraube an VANOS-Verstelleinheit S50 M10x1 12 Nm 9AZ Druckleitung an VANOS-Verstelleinheit S62 / S54 M10 x 1 13 Nm Druckleitung an Druckspeicher und VANOS-Verstelleinheit S50 M12 x 1 20 Nm 10AZ Deckel für Magnetventil an VANOS-Verstelleinheit S50 / B30 M5 8.8 6 Nm S50 / B32 M5 10.9 8 Nm S62 M7 10.9 19 Nm 11AZ Deckel an VANOS-Verstelleinheit (Auslassseite) S54 / S50 / B32 M6 10.9 13 Nm 12AZ Magnetventil an Verteilerstück M62 / VANOS M27x1,5 25 Nm 13AZ Linksgewinde: Auslasskettenrad an Auslassnockenwelle M62 / VANOS M12x1,5 125 Nm 14AZ Linksgewinde: VANOS-Verstelleinheit an Einlassnockenwelle M62 / VANOS M12x1,5 110 Nm 15AZ Linksgewinde: Mutter der Geberradverschraubung M62 / VANOS M18x1,5 40 Nm 16AZ Verstelleinheit an Auslass- oder Einlassnockenwelle N40 / N42 / N45 / N46 M10x1 Schrauben erneuern Fügemoment (means simply torque + 90 degrees turn) 20 Nm Drehwinkel 90 ° Drehwinkel 90 ° N62 / N62TU / N73 M10x1 Schrauben erneuern Drehmoment 80 Nm 17AZ Rückschlagventil N62 / N62TU / N73 M14x1,5 20 Nm 1AZ 4/2 Wege-Ventil/Magnetventil an VANOS-Gehäuse M52 / M52TU / M54 / M56 / S52 / S50US / M50 / VANOS 30 Nm 2AZ Hohlschraube an VANOS-Verstelleinheit M52 / M52TU / M54 / M56 / S52 / S50US / M50 / VANOS M14 x 1,5 32 Nm 3AZ Verschlussschraube an VANOS-Verstelleinheit M52 / M52TU / M54 / M56 / S52 / S50US / M50 / VANOS M22 x 1,5 50 Nm 4AZ Linksgewinde: Passschraube für Hydraulikkolben an Zahnwelle M52TU / M54 / M56 M6 10 Nm 5AZ Hydraulik-Leitung für VANOS an Ölfilter-Aggregateträger M52 / M52TU / M54 / M56 / S52 / S50US / M50 / VANOS 32 Nm 6AZ Bundmutter an Zahnwelle S50 M6 9 Nm 7AZ Deckel an VANOS-Verstelleinheit (Hydraulikkolben-Einlassseite) S50 M5 5 Nm 8AZ Filterschraube an VANOS-Verstelleinheit S50 M10x1 12 Nm 9AZ Druckleitung an VANOS-Verstelleinheit S62 / S54 M10 x 1 13 Nm Druckleitung an Druckspeicher und VANOS-Verstelleinheit S50 M12 x 1 20 Nm 10AZ Deckel für Magnetventil an VANOS-Verstelleinheit S50 / B30 M5 8.8 6 Nm S50 / B32 M5 10.9 8 Nm S62 M7 10.9 19 Nm 11AZ Deckel an VANOS-Verstelleinheit (Auslassseite) S54 / S50 / B32 M6 10.9 13 Nm 12AZ Magnetventil an Verteilerstück M62 / VANOS M27x1,5 25 Nm 13AZ Linksgewinde: Auslasskettenrad an Auslassnockenwelle M62 / VANOS M12x1,5 125 Nm 14AZ Linksgewinde: VANOS-Verstelleinheit an Einlassnockenwelle M62 / VANOS M12x1,5 110 Nm 15AZ Linksgewinde: Mutter der Geberradverschraubung M62 / VANOS M18x1,5 40 Nm 16AZ Verstelleinheit an Auslass- oder Einlassnockenwelle N40 / N42 / N45 / N46 M10x1 Schrauben erneuern Fügemoment 20 Nm Drehwinkel 90 ° Drehwinkel 90 ° N62 / N62TU / N73 M10x1 Schrauben erneuern Drehmoment 80 Nm 17AZ Rückschlagventil N62 / N62TU / N73 M14x1,5 20 Nm Done :)

Hi 50skid, This is unrelated but I just had an experience that I think may be of interest to anyone who owns a 2001 330ci or any model similar that has fold-out seats which cannot be removed mechanically from inside the car . I recently locked my master key in the trunk of my car and because the master key is the only key that will get you into the trunk, you're kind of fucked because without it you can't use either of the two trunk release buttons without the key being in the ignition. A duplicate key (if you don't have the original) costs $175.00, the valet key is $50.00 and a locksmith is $150.00 If you don't feel like getting either of these keys or a locksmith, here is a solution you may want to consider. First (I repeat): you cannot get into the trunk (if you have the fold-out type seats) as you need to get into the trunk to operate the releases to the seats, so this is what you do: Remove the driver-side speaker and the plastic well piece so you have access to the trunk latch via the hole. The release latch is directly behind where that hole is (if you reach in you will feel a square-ish plastic box, that is the latch release. At the side nearest the trunk lid is where the lever is located and using a 5-6" screwdriver you feel around for the cavity where the lever is and push towards the back of the car. Voila! you're in and there's plenty of room to get in to find your key.

Can't believe this has been 4 years since you made this. I'm onto e90 now but you and I worked e46 together for years!!! I know the e46 inside and out (not M3), including bodywork, exhaust systems, suspension, drive, engine and some comfort electrics. However, the braking system, good as it may be when working perfectly, it is prone to occasional abs error despite maintenance. I say this as it is a potential dangerous system where the abs can activate and lock on a bend (different wheel speeds detected). Yes- resulting in a crash.

No need to. If your VANOS is still okay and just a little off then only your consumption will go up a bit to compensate that little loss. In road conditions unable to notice. If your VANOS is close to dead your 3.0 will feel like a 2.5 and so on the more it is on its way out. The more your VANOS is "done" the less power output you get. If your engine rattles like your chains are loose then your VANOS is already due :) you could check your actual mileage and compare it to the BMW service manual when it would be due to rebuild and if it is past that and the previous owners didn't visit a BMW dealer then it is very likely you are running on stock mounted seals from day one of production. Which many owners do they just don't know it yet :)
@drewE464 жыл бұрын
J.P. my 3.0 definitely feels like a 2.5 now. Which is understandable with 160k miles. Although there is no video I’ve been able to find on KZbin that test 0-60 with bad vanos, vs a 0-60 with a brand new seals etc. Just to see if it’s worth the work!

For anyone in a foreign country and Amazon won't ship the kits, I found the seller also has an eBay store and the kits can be purchased on there no problems.

Hey 50's kid, thanks for your informative videos on bmw repairs! As a newer youtuber making detailed German car diy guides, it would be awesome if you can leave this comment up for others to see, and will return the favour in the future

cracking on through this today, great guide. cant for the life of me get the pistons open though, no matter how much I clamp and how much penetrant spray or leverage i use. Fused shut. Fuming, waste of money on the rattle rings.

Thank you it's nice to have a video that is understanding from the same perspective as someone who knows vehicles but not familiar with German vehicles as I am far from familiar with them and could see myself Having the same experience with the vanos. However, the happy demeanor would be the same thing is the curse words out of my mouth at times would make my rebuild situation not user friendly nor appropriate for little ears in the background of potential viewers so better you instead of I making this video

Could not get my vice to grab. With a wrench it just turned the part. I put some scratches in the part (even with wood teeth). Honed em down with 2000 grit sandpaper. Fingers crossed. impact wrench probably the only thing that will work for the anti rattle rings without the actual work holding tool. Otherwise everything else went together easy.

Did my VANOS today using this kit. 2001 E39 530i. The double seals don't fit! I had to ditch the lighter brown rings and just use the square cut black ones. There was absolutely no way I could have used two seals. The channel was not deep enough to accommodate. I wonder, did BMW change the design? Hopefully I have no problems. We'll see!

Hey 50sKid, great channel! simple question: when I was tightening down the center bolts to torque spec (those inside the caps w/ reverse thread) the cams moved slight, like less than/or a tooth. Do you think I messed up the timing? car was just engaged (its a manual) and no lock tools whatsoever as everyone seems to do... It seems to be running fine but it kinda worries me. Thank you!

J ///M3 I did the same thing... was it a problem for you???
@mr.recruiterp35832 жыл бұрын
So did you have a problem? As long as the sprocket doesn't jump a tooth, it shouldn't matter. Also you may have found out that you need to turn the engine crank by hand while pushing and setting the exhaust vanos gear into the end of the camshaft.

2002 bmw 325xi. So I’ve replaced the oil filter housing gasket, it was leaking, fixed that, replaced all ccv and hoses, replaced valve cover gasket and gromets, and cleaned the engine pretty good, now most of the oil is caked on hose at front pager side of engine, but the rear 02 sensor is where I’m seeing a decent amount of smoke, i originally replaced valve cover gasket t solve this but apparently there a leak elsewhere, what other spots could leak oil on passenger side

This was a good video, while I am not as heavy on BMW knowledge as the poster is. It still made me that I could easily accomplish this myself.

Please buy a laser pointer it would help if we could see what you are pointing at. Lots of times it dark there are shadows and a lot of twists, turns and humps, it’s hard trying to figure of what you are talking about. Thank you

Hi i have M52B28TU ENGINE when outside starts lower +10 degrees celcium cold engine start idling end shots off. Don't have faults, but somewhere i read how diagnos vanos issue, you should disconnect vano. Today i disconnected intake camshaft vanos solenoid and engine works perfect, but still a little bit idling, then a disconnect exhaust vanos and engine works how it should. Interesting thing that vanos works bad, but no fault are shown.
