BMW E53 X5 Navigation LCD Screen Replacement DIY

This video details how to remove the OE Navigation system from a E53 X5 as well as the process and procedure for replacing a defective LCD screen. My screen had some dead pixels on it, that is why I replaced it.
This will also work on any similar model BMW that has an MKX nav computer, typically found in the E38, E39, E46, E86, E85 and E83 cars.

Excellent video. I called BMW yesterday and they said it was $2,500+ (parts only) for a new replacement screen, yes that much just for just the replacement display, not the GPS and everything else, just the display. Thanks for posting!

Awesome video! i got my screen from ebay sent from china cheap, watched this vid and was able to replace the screen in about 1.5hrs all up, gone are the crappy grey lines in the screen!

Thank you so much for taking the time to create this! I've only had a few pixels go out on my X5 (2006 4.4i Sports package/winter) and I assume that it's only a matter of time before more start to go. I live in Missouri, and we had a heat wave that hit approximately 102 (I can only imagine how hot it got in inside). When I returned, the pixels were gone. I have no idea if it is a heat related issue, but I've heard stories of them returning in time. Thanks again for the contribution.

Thanks for your feedback. It would appear that removing the fuse would be safer alternative to forcing the screen down manually.

Well, I doubt you're still having this problem as it was 3 months ago, but I would have gone back to ensure that no cables inside the unit were left unplugged. Especially in the last step it is easy for the wires to get loosened.

You need to search a bit better. They have screens for the E39. Feel free to ask the website owner which model you should use for your car.

This was great! I ordered my new screen and installed it pretty easily. The only question I have is now that the new screen is in the display is off by about an 1/8" to the right. Everything functions normally but anything on the far right of the screen is cut off. An example of this is when using the GPS it only reads "GP" in the upper right corner. On the left side of the screen is an 1/8" of space where nothing is displayed. Any thoughts? Is there a way to adjust the registration of the screen? Thank you

I obviously wasn't careful enough and broke one of the small white connectors with 5 colored wires coming from it. This was connected to the board attached to the back of the screen. I broke the side that is supposed to be permanently connected to the wires. Wires are fine and I'm hoping I can find another end somewhere to replace... I'm about to hit up Radio Shack, but any other suggestions? Is there an official name for these I could use to search Google with?

I have a blue screen with the option to choose sat nav gone. DVD unit in the boot has been checked and fine. Any ideas please??

I am not sure if I can help address your issue. I replaced my screen because of bad pixels. Your issue may be related to a different issue.

what can happen if you don't remove the fuses? also, sometimes the blue goes away from the screen colors, usually when it is very hot...how can that be dealt with so the image will remain the same? Thank you

This is a replacement as the original was damaged. This is NOT an upgrade.

I replaced the screen as in your video, plugged it all back in..it started up but wont get passed the first warning screen about not using this unit in traffic...and none of the buttons work on the unit either please help!!

Thanks for your video.. Worked great with a new Sharp screen ??? out of China for A$92. All good except for the same problem as Se Si. The picture is all offset to the right by about 3mm. Looking at my old screen there are two adjustment screws.. H-Pos and VCO. Do you have any idea as to whether you can adjust the sceen back to the left and if so which screw and how much turning for one 3mm.. as you know I would have to take the unit out for each adjustment.

Hey Blue Purple Red! I really appreciate your fantastic DIY. I managed it to get and changed the display (X5 E53 2004). However, after I finished everything as best as I can I noticed that the buttons are not working. Meaning I am not able to push the left are right knob button to select e.g. something from the menu. Even I am not able to start/stop the radio. It just plays just from the beginning. Any idea what may be the problem or which cable is at least in charge for this function? Thanks for the video, I have 2004 X5 4.8 and I am having the same problem of losing the pixels on the LCD screen, but BMW service people told me that I have to get whole unit replaced (costing around NZ $3200) because I cant get a new LCD screen on its own.
