A bit more of a detailed video on the install process than we normally do. But i got the geckos installed and check the ride hight out. They are better coilovers than i was expecting for the money.

Looks great! Not sure if you guys adjusted the preload yet. Best thing to do is corner balance the car with the driver or equal weight in the drivers seat after you drive for couple weeks so it settles. Then adjust the preload so it's barely snug with the springs as a starting point. Made huge difference on my car at the track and street and it is not as bouncy as it was when I first installed my coilovers.

Curiosity has definitely got the better of me with the brake upgrade discussion. I think a lot of people will not like the route i have chosen. Im not really sure how well they are going to work... But they should look good and at the end of the day i am not doing any circuit work so i shouldn't really stress the brakes that much.

For cheapies they look alright. Excited to see the road test! First time I did coilovers, on my e39, I didn't know you had to spread the clamp at the bottom, assumed undoing the bolt would release it. Hours I yanked, kicked and beat on that strut, until I cottoned on!

Might want to look at replacing the rear shock mounts you reused. They are notoriously very soft from factory, and get worse with age. Think of having a stiff shock mounted to a soft rubber mount, the rubber flexes first. There is an updated part from monroe of all people p/n 907984. Do some reading I'm guessing we'll see those installed pretty quickly.

It will still settle a bit as you drive it another 5-10mm. I'd start with as much wheel travel as you can get out of those coilovers so it doesnt scrape and behave poorly as a daily. Leb spec lowering is not good for handling - generally 15-20mm lower than stock is about as far as you really want and still maintain some decency in ride quality and allow the suspension to actually work over bumps. Good to hear you got 8kg/11kg springs - lots of these cheapies come with ridiculous 14kg or higher spring rates which makes them appaling both as a daily and handling wise as they skip across bumps rather than absorb them. Fingers crossed for you it is a night and day difference!
@ZeroTo60Tube
@ZeroTo60Tube 4 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with all that. I did get the spring rates back to front in the vid, but the slightly lower rates than what BC supply did appeal to me with the Geckos. I rolled it out of the shed, and it does feel pretty damn stiff. I'd say its sitting about 15-20mm lower than it was before, it must be for it to not come off the hoist anymore.

Double check those spring rates (11 kg/mm front, 8 kg/mm rear). The front should be lower than the rear because the front motion ration is 1 (MacPherson strut) and the rear is greater than 1 because the springs are so far inboard. I think mine were 7.8 kg/mm (440 lb/in) front and 11.6 kg/mm (650 lb/in) rear. Maybe you just said them in reverse. I was looking for spring rate info on these Gecko coil overs but couldn't find it. These are the street version, correct? Here's a collection of various spring rates for different E9x suspensions. Most are listed as constant, but some of them are progressive rates, like the stock set. That's why the stock rates are only listed as 150 lb/in or so. It's technically incorrect to list them with a single rate. They are not a 150 lb/in linear spring. You find rates that low on suspensions with a foot or more travel (off road). www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=235797 Looks like everything went together without much drama. That car is so clean on the underside.
@ZeroTo60Tube

@@ZeroTo60Tube I have had them on for approximately 10k miles and initially they were so soft I would bottom out on any abrupt change in the road and it truly made driving my car intolerable after much research and people who had the same setup on the forums all had the same issues. I have taken the front struts off 3 times now and added different bump stops each time since these really only work properly on stock or sport suspension once you go lower they bottom out easily. I remedied this for the most part by using Speedthane bump stops designed for circle track cars,much better now albeit a bit on the firm side but greatly improved cornering, next is m3 front control arms,adjustable end links,m3 front sway bar and some day F30 M Sport front brake upgrade.

@ZeroTo60Tube
@ZeroTo60Tube 4 жыл бұрын
I didn't actually want it any lower than it was before initially. Mainly because it already rubbed with the larger tyres and i wanna add splitters. Front and side. They make the e92s look so much better. I've left these as they come out of the box. Mainly to see if gecko are thoughtful enough to set all the coil overs in a useful position for the cars they sell them for. It has dropped about 10-20mm i think and i dig the look of it.

I wanted to drive them as Gecko supply them for that reason and see what they are like. Also haven't had a chance to properly work out what these particular spring rates should roughly be set to. I mean its normally only a couple of mm on a coil over type spring, but it can make a big difference to bouncyness if i over do it.
