I had a guided tour of the BMW factory in Munich where they built the 3 series in the early 1980's. It was amazing. All I saw was a conveyor belt with body parts going round, then saw the cars in a wind tunnel. The tour lasted three hours and the guide was a Scotsman who had moved to Germany in the 1950's. He showed us a new machine and said it would replace a lot of workers. Our group comprised of me and my wife (English), two American couples and a Canadian couple and they asked what will happen to the workers. Now remember this was the 80's and he said "We will send them home". Back then they were known as guest workers (in English, anyway) and said they could probably retire on the severance package.

They assume that a timing chain is a lifetime thing, and it is, in the vast majority of cases. However, in the cases where it doesn't last te life of te engine, such cars usually get sent to the junkyard. Bad timing chains have been the end of many VW VR6 powered cars.

Depending on the type of engine and application it will be used for, there are regulations that prohibit the use of plastic for certain components on an engine. Of course engine companies would love to reduce production costs, but there are also regulations to adhere to as well as performance of the engine to be mindful of. Lastly, many want to be a part of the "green" economy and be as environmentally conscious as possible (believe it or not).

Too many people doing very menial tasks to build an engine; no wonder they cost so much. An engine for a tractor has more hands-on tasks done by one technician. This way a person is accountable for the quality of a completed engine. I would not touch a BMW with a 10ft pole if you gave it to me for free.
