BMW F-series Clutch Replacement (2018 440i)

Thanks for filming this, will be doing my wife's car on the drive in a few weeks. A good tip for gearbox bolts or anything like that is to get a piece of cardboard, draw a circle on (or the shape of whatever component you're removing), mark the top and just punch the bolts through the cardboard at the relevant points. Never need to worry about not remembering which bolt goes where.

Btw for anyone curious, just looked up in the service manual on how to deal with the pressure plate locking plate and clutch centering tool. The alignment tool that comes with the clutch has a screw in the back. Insert the alignment tool through the clutch and into the flywheel, then remove the screw from the back of the tool. This gives enough room to then install the pressure plate with the locking tab installed Once the pressure plate is torqued down, remove the locking plate. Reinstall the alignment tool screw and use it to remove the alignment tool

I got a dtc for excessive clutch slippage 0811. It went away but, I feel like it might be slipping a little bit in manual mode. Just doesn't feel as "grabby" as a gew months ago. I messed around a lot in the canyons when I was learning the car. Oops lol. When you replace the clutch im assuming there's a break in period of 500 stop and go miles like other new clutches or is it ready to go out of the box?

The gear selector sensor I broke mine off while removing my motor just the ends that’s connected with the two 10mm bolts would it still be good to zip tie somewhere else or best to replace?

G'day Kern, Loved the video mate, I know this question has been sprinkled in the comments but I'm yet to find a proficient answer on the forums. Is a Single Mass Flywheel beneficial for the GS6-45BZ? I understand there is associated issues with chatter, some suggest spring loaded clutches can reduce this but I'm unsure, however being that DMFW are a 'normal wear item' would it be a good idea to convert this to SMFW while the transmission is being accessed? I ask because I have heard of the new supra gearbox utilising a Clutch masters (FW-340-SF) steel SMFW in the aftermarket community. Would be greatly appreciating your insight, I have been living on forums trying to find an answer

very useful thank you. i was wondering what that piece in the clutch was for i was thinking surely the gearbox shaft wont fit through that and it wont lol. im going to be fitting this clutch to a 320d although the lining will be removed from the clutch plate and put onto a 320d clutch plate because the center of the clutch won't fit my gearbox. but im pretty sure the process of removal and refit is exactly the same. The clutch back plate will bolt straight to the flywheel of any 20 30 or 35d manual with no issues. maybe this will help some others as this clutch should be a direct bolt on for a 330-335d etc its capable of 850nm and will be a stock like clutch. the 320d however the gearbox shaft is smaller so the clutch plate won't fit however the lining will fit the 320d plate so you just need to get it swapped over by a professional company. i wouldnt attempt the clutch rivets yourself its just not worth the risk.

How did you know the 550i clutch would just bolt up? Could that same clutch be used to upgrade an f22 240i ?

Yes it will. If you look up part numbers, the clutch in our cars is the same model they've used since 2008 e90 335i. So all cars since then have the same clutch fitment and the 550i clutch will work. The only thing BMW changed in newer models is the flywheel.

check newtis.info for more details on your specific car. from what I read, you can disconnect the transfer case and awd control unit, then the rest of the process is more or less the same.

Can I also not detach the clutch line but unscrew the slave cylinder? I have a N13 engine with 6 speed MT, so this might be different. I think I have a flexible clutch line, so this might work

Question, I removed that retaining clip before I installed the pressure plate for the very reason that the clutch tool wouldn't fit through it. I read in a forum that the clutch will not work if that clip is removed before installing the pressure plate, do you believe that's the case? I'm currently in the middle of the job right now

You produce great videos. 2 questions: Are you a mechanic by trade and was the upgraded clutch absolutely necessary. I have 2017 440i and wasn't counting on upgrading the clutch as I build some additional power.

Not a mechanic but the clutch upgrade is necessary for the torque you'll make above stage 2 93. The clutch begins to slip above stage 2 E30. This is feedback from people online. Also, it is the same clutch that was used since the 2007 335i, so lot's of historical data on the limits. If you're just sticking with a Downpipe and pump gas, stock clutch is fine. But the 550i clutch is a cheap upgrade that feels like stock if you plan to go a little farther.

@@euddys The N54 engine has a different crank bolt pattern for the flywheel. You can see at 17:55 that the B58 uses 8 bolts on the flywheel, not 6. The S55 engine uses a twin disk clutch with a taller bellhousing for more clearance due to the taller clutch height. The only thing that is compatible is the clutch disk and pressure plate for N54, N55, and B58.

Off the top of my head, the only thing you need for oem type installation is the clutch alignment tool and the flywheel counterhold tool.

Excellent video! How did the break in period feel when driving? Any slip at all? I put my tune back to stock for break in period for when I get it back from the shop. I admire you for doing this on your own. Unfortunately, I think my gear selector sensor was damaged during the replacement so waiting on a new sensor for now. Hopefully that fixes my hard code.

Yes it will fit with the oem flywheel. I sent them an email confirming it would but i guess they haven't updated their compatibility.
