I have just changed my mirror caps to carbon fibre ones and used your method. Many thanks, it was just as demonstrated and the new caps look great and no broken clips or mirror glass !!

I cracked my mirror doing this strategy. I used the same exact tools that he used, except I was able to pop the actual side mirror cap off effortlessly in less than a minute. Just use the same caution and you literally have nothing to worry about. And if you do break a side mirror cap, it's a whole lot cheaper than replacing the mirror glass.

Yea listen to this guy, cracked mine pretty much instantly by trying to remove the glass. No need whatsoever. Pry away at the top of the cap and work your way around like mentioned above takes less than a minute. Glass cost me more than the caps 😂

You can turn the car on so the heated mirror will activate. My mirror were very warm to the touch when doing my swaps

Thanks for the video. Very helpful. Just changed mine to Dinan Carbon Fiber. Used some Schwaben moulding tools (wide tools) and then placed a piece of heavy duty cardboard over the mirror to distribute the force from the tool. Mirror popped off nicely. Used smaller tools to help unseat the plastic clips and pull the mirror cap off. Thanks again for the video!

Lol. I like it how you always make it look so easy. I couldn't unclip the mirror from the bottom. I found it easier unclipping from the outside edge. Here's a tip, the passenger mirror push on tabs are only bonded to the mirror and are very fragile. Use something to hold it down whilst disconnecting. Also the gloss black on the plastic surround marks ridiculously easy. Slide a piece of paper around the edge of the mirror and mask off the edge before prying.

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I drive a 1 Series F20 (Same side mirror as F30) - and I needed to replace the lower black plastic housing! I didn't have a trim removal tool, but improvised with a paint scraper wrapped in a microfibre cloth! Worked well! Thanks!!

Thanks! Mission accomplished. Note: if you have the Harmony Karodon speakers in the little triangle, there’s two plastic clips arranged vertically about 10cm apart. Some gentle, patient wiggling and they will release. I found it easier to remove the speaker grill first.

Tested and confirmed, this works well. Also helps get you started if you need to replace more than just the F30, like I had to because of a poor job at reversing out of a garage...

I just performed this job. I was completely white knuckling it when I removed the mirrors after all the stories of disaster. I took the time to heat up the entire enclosure so everything was warmed up and hopefully less brittle. I used a 2.5" wide plastic puddy knife to pry it out, and held a thick piece of cardboard against the mirror side while prying.. I am happy to say.. success!! No breakage of either mirror.

Popping it open from the bottom made me break a piece of the plastic clipping. Moved the mirrors inwards and popped them open from the outside edge worked much better for me, in case anybody was having trouble with the method in the video. (2018 F36)

No glass broken. Thanks! I used a foam wax pad to put pressure down on the glass. Thankfully I didn't try to pull the cap off from the back...

Hey, used your tips and trick and got it done. The only thing I would add is that if you have some needle nose plyers handy they make it easier to squeeze the tabs and a microfiber cloth to hold the glass as you pry it out. Thanks!

I get the bottom clips of the glass pop off but still couldn't remove the glass. I was afraid it will crack the glass if I go any further at that point so I just pry the side mirror cap off to finish this project. 2 of the 6 clips broken as the result but my glasses are safe. It's 59 F degree outside, so if you doing the same, try to do it in a warm environment.

Broke something trying this. Just a plastic thing from behind the mirror. Seems to still work fine. Never did get the mirror off. Just tried prying the cap off instead and that was super easy. Didn’t break any clips.

When you say "damage the clips" you mean the clips for the old cover correct? Meaning, if you do that, the new cover will still be fine? You simply can't put the older one on correct?

Hey Bryan, I'm a new subscriber and a new BMW owner as well. Your videos are great and very helpful, so thank you. My question is, do you think wrapping the mirror caps in carbon fiber vinyl wrap would work and still look good? I've never wrapped anything and I'm considering wrapping the chrome side markers on an F10 LCI in black gloss. The painted replacement part is just way too expensive at $150 bucks for such a small piece so I'm going to attempt the wrap method. Your feedback is greatly appreciated! Take care.

Mine did not come off as easily, and since I was swapping the directional assemblies also, I removed the screws, which gave the removal process more "flexibility" as I guess it is best described. If you do it you will understand. Remove the Torx head screws, all 5.

Just changed mine out after watching the video! Was definitely super nervous and did not want to crack the mirrors and I successfully achieved this however now when i back up my drivers side mirror does not automatically angle down but the passengers side does? Both mirrors still function properly and are able to move. Anyone else have this issue and how did you resolve it?

Another method that i did was i got a heat gun and heated up each individual cap for about 3 minutes then i pried it off with my fingers/a little help with a flat head and they came right off, no clips broke.

I cracked my mirror following this video. When I tried just prying the mirror caps off, it came off easily without breaking the clips. After the fact, I think I rather risk breaking the clips rather than the mirror.

My friends shop figured it out. You have to remove the glass again then push hard on bottom right corner of plastic ring where the inner compass points to for driver side. Opposite push location for passenger side. Until you hear it click back in place. The plastic moves about half inch back toward cap. After this you should be able to tint the mirrors again.

Hello Sir! Good Video! Do you have a closeup of the wiring for that mirror? Or anyone for that matter.... My mirror was stolen and connectors were clipped off... I have a new mirror now and need to know how the wires go..... I see 2 black one black with white marker and one pink.. From the video... I think the 2 black wires go on top to the heater portion of the mirror and the pink and black with white marker go to the auto dim function.... can anyone confirm or send me a closeup picture?
