The Driver is hired by a nervous movie manager to spy on a paranoid actor's wife. During his tailing of the wife, the Driver describes the right way to tail someone. As he follows her he begins to fear what he might learn of her apparently tragic life. He discovers the wife is fleeing the country and returning to her mother's, and that she's been given a black eye, likely by her husband. He returns the money for the job, refusing to tell where the wife is, and drives off telling the manager never to call him again.

Still here in 2023. Loved this. My favorite of the BMW Films, although the Madonna one comes in at a close second. I like the unintentional aperture mistake at 6:20 where the screen brightens momentarily. It's like a light bulb goes off in his head and he realizes what's going on with her and her husband.

Yes, but I love the ending parable when he gives back the money: If you're not willing to see the end of the road, then maybe you shouldn't be out there. Nice way to say "Do your own damned dirty work, and never call me again" It just makes me so sad that these films are so good, and what Hollywood puts out every year is such shit in comparison.

Malcolm X Martin The context determines the meaning. Forrest Whitaker hires the driver to the dirty work of a jealous husband. His character intentionally blinds himself to the damage Mickey Rourke does to her. To maintain that blindness, he pays the driver so that he can go on without having to see the pain or hardship inflicted on the girl. Forrest Whiticar is the one who didn't want to see where the road ends so he paid the driver. The line is uttered when the driver, having seen the effect of the abuse at the end of the road, gives the money back. It's a double-entendre. You can read into it that it takes a special person to drive the BMW, someone who sees things through to the end, but in the context of the story he's telling Forresst Whittaker's character do his own damned dirty work; that if he's going to enable Mickey Rourke to abuse that girl then he should at least see the pain that he's causing her.

czdaniel1 I disagree. Whitaker is playing a supporting role, Clive Owen is the protagonist. Your theory is predicated on Forest Whitaker being the protagonist. He obviously is not. He's just a go-between; a guy given $, to give to someone else in order to get a job done. He's not even portrayed in the film to give an inkling of a fuck about the woman, if my memory serves me correctly. Matter of fact, I think the only loyalty he shows in the film is to Rourke, per his finding someone to do the job/ or to himself for taking whatever portion of the $ he is to receive for completed job-and even that is a stretch , purported by me because of the fact that it is never actually said or shown in the movie that he's receiving a portion of the money. When you're dealing w/ vague art, like a canvas painted w/ no words or clear explanation, or a VERY non-specific, haphazard poem, you can look deeply into it w/ a wide range of possibilities of meaning, to lend your own artistic leisure. But not w/ this film. That's simply my opinion. You actually seem like a Very smart person, so there is absolutely a possibility that you are right, even if for the fact that the way I "say" the film should be critiqued is "opinion in itself" and not factual per there are no concrete parameters to art, as I have purported. Well, there kind of are, but they are more like wet puddy than hardened clay, if that makes sense.

I´m wondering what the Driver means by his last words "there's always something waiting at the end of the road...." Maybe he´s referring in general to people´s interests/true intentions/ or (lack of) good will?

+Estivo Music "there's always something waiting at the end of the road, if you're not willing to see what it is, you probably shouldn't be out there at first place." this because the driver is hired to spy on the crazy man's wife, who accuses her to cheat on him, but later surprisingly he finds out more about her tragic life with the husband is very unbearable (something at the end that he's not willing to see), so he lets the wife to flees the country and stop working for the crazy man (shouldn't be out there at first place).
