Wow, small world! I grew up in the town near where Kyle first stopped to gas up the i3. I realized it when he drove past the church my family belonged to. haha the sun dooo kwik shop is a decent stop if the traffic isn't crazy there, trying to make the left in. I actually have a video from there a couple weeks back when we went for labors day to the beach with the Bolt I just bought. A little trip from Fort Mill down to Ocean Isle Beach. Actually charged at like 5 different places in that day just to see how it would go. Think I can make it all the way to the beach to charge at a level 2 right at beach parking for the day and not have to stop as much.... that's going to be an adventure to come very soon. :-) Thanks for making these videos, very informative.

The E-tron is such a nice car. Vastly superior to any Tesla when it comes to design and build (both interior and exterior) imo. Actually, the E-tron is the best selling car here in Norway so far in 2020. And currently EV's make out over 50% of all new car sales here. Thanks for sharing your roadtrip with us :)

Another great adventure Kyle, it would be awesome to see a smaller, lighter and simpler version of the eTron as a sporty hatchback. Regarding the i3, have you heard of anyone installing a larger tank to extend the range for roadtrips in areas where charging is limited? A gas can in the back is one option, but an actual tank would be much cleaner.

My sense of a ICE car with 30 miles per gallon would had used 32 gals of gas. It took a while but it was worth it. One thing that surprised me was how comfortable the i3 is. No back pain or leg pain. Good road tripping car for comfort but not for range. In the future I'll use this car for around town and trips up to 200 miles. Thanks for asking!

I’ve been wanting to see you do a road trip on an eTron....almost offered mine up for ya....but very glad Nick took one for the team instead. I really hope you get to do a long trip using electrify America 150kw chargers and compare that to what you are used to in the Tesla. I know you usually don’t charge to full because of the tapering...but I think the Audi has battery temp controls that minimize that. We only have 1 EA charger in MN , so I haven’t been able to personally test the FC for road trips.

It's hard for people to realize (was for me, too) that a continually-running 34hp generator filling a battery is MUCH different that just a 34hp engine in a 3000lb car. Analogy: Much like a quiet stream continually filling a hydroelectric reservoir, ready for a spike in usage, drivers RARELY need the i3's fully 170hp (unless you're racing up Pikes Peak at record speed). If you understand the rare limitations of this car, it is a brilliantly thought-out powertrain. I wish other carmakers would follow the path of 100mile EV paired with a simple & small range extender (micro-turbines anyone?)

You can thank California for having to hack the fuel tank. Have had 2 i3 rex in the past - loved them both: 2015, 2017. I did a 1200 mile road trip in the '17 and kept a 1 gallon fuel can loaded for just in cases..... I did the TJA as well to my '17, was so much fun. Hated to get rid of - went back to petrol as charge times were killing me at work. Found the i3 to be a great car and hope to get a last generation once they get over the 200 mpcharge and Rex again. It was cheaper to drive the i3 and petrol - LOL than the Audi etron

Cypress trees. Would the REV engine run out of gas or does it cut off when low fuel? Once EA sites are back up I'd like to see what the max average trip speed would be in an i3. Your SC to SC to maximize Tesla trips speed, but for an i3 (with software mods).

It just turns off when the fuel level is low enough - similar to running out of gas but without hurting a fuel pump. Pre software change, it would shut off when only 1.9 gallons were run though, now it'll let the near full tank size of 2.4 gallons go through. I would like to see this charger hopping as well!

John Edwards For one, it has limited range. My 2017 has a range of 110 miles, the 2020 has a range of 126 miles. Not much of an improvement. It doesn’t have autonomous driving, just adaptive cruise control. No lane keeping assist, no lane departure warning, no blind spot detection. The adaptive cruise operates on 1 camera that can have issues with fog, rain and low sun. In these conditions it kicks off the cruise control a lot. It does have self parking, I used it 1 time when I first got it. It was OK, but I can parallel park just fine on my own. The only difference between my i3 and a new one is 16 miles more range and Apple CarPlay, and both of those were added on the 2018 model year.

@@askeeter84 I plan to pull a small trailer, about 16'..... I will probably be travelling full time and know that when you have a trailer hooked up, FSD doesn't work. Will the basic autopilot work though? Another question, if in camp mode, will the motor battery keep the 12v battery charged so I can have a small inverter plugged in?? Last question, if I'm towing most of the time, would it still be best to buy the FSD for the possible resale value? I'm thinking of getting a Cybertruck when they come out. Might be easier to tow with. Thanks in advance!!

Kyle, so Nick uses his Model 3 performance at the track and it has the Martian MW03 wheels. Are they the 7.5 one's like you got for yours? Does Nick find that he gets better times with the Martian wheels than he did with the Tesla default wheels? What are those times? Once you promised you'd test those track times with the Martian wheels and let us know, but I haven't seen you post those time comparisons yet.

@@OutofSpecMotoring Kyle, you got the 7.5 Martians because they were best for the consumption test, but I guess you're saying that Nick has the wider Martians because they're better for the track times. Does Nick have the 8.0s? I'm wondering which size would be the best now, to get good track times but also good consumption results. I'm wondering what your track times are with your 7.5 Martians also.

@@OutofSpecMotoring Kyle, on the KZbin channel Dirty Tesla, he compared the Wh/Mile and Efficiency of the 8.5" Martians vs the Wh/Mile and Efficiency of the Aero wheels and tires which came with his non-performance dual motor AWD Model 3. See the results kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGStYXqfp52lm9E It's not clear whether the greater Wh/Mile and lower Efficiency of the 8.5" Martians is because he didn't have low rolling resistance tires, or if it was because his Martian wheels were 8.5". I'm wondering if perhaps the 8.0" Martians are the best way to go, rather than the 7.5" or the 8.5". What are your thoughts on all of this?

This really puts the i3 in a bad light. Any i3 built in the last 5 years could make that trip with NO stops. When mine is fully charged in the summer it shows 170 miles on battery and 80 miles on the range extender. Total: 250 miles.

So you can trick the motor into charging the car while its not moving? Interesting. In the Volt, the engine is big enough to fully replace the battery, but it never charges per se. Of course it (and the tank - 9g, about 400 miles worth) takes up a lot more of the volume. How does the heat work in i3? In the Volt they were thinking "hybrid" when they designed it, so electric heat is an afterthought; resistance only, they didnt add the $12 reversing valve to the A/C to make it a heat pump, they stupidly figured you would run the engine for heat.
@OutofSpecMotoring
@OutofSpecMotoring 3 жыл бұрын
The motor isn’t connected to the wheels, just directly to the battery. Other than that it’s the normal i3 BEV - and yes, resistive heating
@natehill8069
@natehill8069 3 жыл бұрын
@@OutofSpecMotoring Disappointing, I would have expected Germans to go the extra 1.61 km and fit a heat pump. The Volt will connect the engine to the wheels once you are at speed because that's more efficient than converting torque to electricity and back again; its interesting to watch the power provision bars as it accelerates. OTOH I would assume the i3 always runs the engine at a single (most efficient) RPM. That could make for a REALLY quiet muffler.
