Björn, thanks for your opinion. I own an i4e40 and after almost 4 months of ownership I can underwrite your conclusions on comfort and efficiency. Now, commenting on why first a niche i3 and i8, I believe BMW wanted to avoid recalls on a big volume car. It looks like that the philosophy of how to bring a car to market is totally different between the traditional automakers and the new kids on the block. Where Tesla promises or brings something to market which is not entirely ready (panel gaps, rust on earlier X’s, poor general build quality of seats in earlier days), the Germans and Japanese want to get it right the first time they try. I find it remarkable that BMW brings its first volume model to market on a relatively new technology to them on a compromised platform (according to a lot of people) and gets an efficiency close to the product of a company which is dedicated to EV from their start on.

It's nice to see that the whole range argument is becoming more and more obsolete. 5% more or less is no longer a real argument for most customers, just as it was not for fossil cars with slightly more or less consumption. Even the eqe or eqs are efficient with the right package, of course not with fat performance tires. But overall it means customers have more choice and fossil cars lose their advantages, that's important, not everyone wants a Tesla and that's the only way more people will switch from fossil cars, that's really the point. Also, whether you need 20min longer or shorter for 1000km is not really decisive, in everyday life it doesn't matter at all for most people. The important thing is that there are now many really good electric cars. Good job BMW and that gives hope for the "new class" platform which then hopefully also loses its excess in weight.

Agree! Also keep in mind that the 1000 cycles are to 80ish % remaining capasity (or was it 70%?), which means that it could go for a long time. Say you reach 600 000km and has 70% battery capasity left, that would mean you still would have 420km range (600 * 0.70).

Just yeserday I test drove the i4 M50, and the full throttle acceleration scred the shoot out of me. I suspect this edrive 40 is a better package when it comes to everyday driving. Too bad that at least for now awd on the i4 only comes with the higher spec
@fixandtests2 жыл бұрын
haha , i had the same feeling testing the M 50 , If I had not used both hands on the steering wheel, then i would driven it off the road .. the sport boost mode was intense. I wanted to test the edrive 40, but seems only the M50 is available as test cars in my country. I dont need the m50 performance and was thinking edrive40 and add some extras instead

The efficiency in winter will be interesting... Can it match model 3 with heat pump? I doubt it
@RobertPuklin2 жыл бұрын
all Teslas in (and bellow) it´s price range (3,Y) also have AWD, which is a big plus in winter.
@v.corleone7372 жыл бұрын
Well, cars are not always about efficiency. Otherwise, people wouldn't buy Porsche's when a Toyota is more efficient. The same here. The Model 3 is an efficient car, but it's a toy. Feels like and sounds like a toy. And the wind noise is unbearable. With the i4, I guess you will have less efficiency in winter, but a way better car that is leagues above a Model 3.
@RobertPuklin2 жыл бұрын
@@v.corleone737 hi, that calculation is no longer valid, as BEVs can deliver both power and efficiency at the same time (e.g. a Porsche can be both more efficient and more powerful than a Toyota). Model 3 will be "leagues above" in the software and tech department. It is all an exercise in knowing your own priorities. i4 feels more like a Taycan competitor, because for someone looking for ultimate driving comfort, Model 3 was never an option.

Driving in D mode with Adaptive Regeneration would probably yield more efficiency than all of that and less work. Since BMW went with brushes on the motor, the motor can truly freewheel. The car will coast and not regenerate until it needs to decelerate for a reason such as a slower car ahead. Coasting is more efficient than regeneration since you always have energy loss in the transfer. Save B mode for when you KNOW you will be decelerating, like driving around town.

I drove BMWs for 20years. Loved the design and innovations. But after 2 years with a Tesla LR (with KW suspension) BMW feels overcomplex and outdated. And I still don’t get used to the front grill.

How is Tesla way ahead in tech?! Mercedes has better route planning, driving assists and infotainment. VW and Mercedes have better voice recognition, except for English maybe. Tesla's sign recognition still doesn't work. Two weeks ago a 21-yo amateur coder developed a system far superior to Tesla's with a Raspberry-Pi and a cheap logitech camera. Their autopilot doesn't deserve its name. Tesla is still miles away from autonomous driving as can be seen by looking at the many incidents published on yt every couple of weeks.

I just can't get over the interior. The software looks like an iPhone from 15 years ago. The display is tiny. The navigation maps look like 15 year old TomToms. And then, to add insult to injury, they include this little trackpad thingy... This is a real turn off for me. But then again... I cannot stand any German car interiors. Audi, Mercedes, VW.... they are all equally bad. Tesla is WAY WAY WAY ahead of them... it's not even funny. And I say this as someone who actively decided AGAINST buying a Tesla.
