I’m currently in an i4 M50, changing to the i5 e40 which is due for delivery in Jan. Had a test drive in both i5 variants. While the e40 isn’t anywhere near as ballistic as the i4 M50 I prefer how the i5 drives.

@@TotallyEVit does but only if you don’t choose the adaptive suspension in the i5, and you can do that. That way it will be much more comfortable and you have rear wheel steering also

That's right, but it's an option as mentioned in the review. Still, it's not that much different from the i4 system. Of course, the i4 doesn't include rear wheel steering.

I believe you totally misunderstood the handsfree driving function. When your adaptive cruise knows you'd like to drive faster the one in front of you, the car gives you a suggestion overtake (when the overtake lane is available) and you can simply confirm by looking in the corresponding mirror. Looked a bit like you tried to swap the roles of car & driver ;-)

How does the RWD handle in wet or snowy conditions? I’m looking at the AWD because I have safety concerns. No one has addressed this specific question.

Haven't had any issues with modern RWD electric BMWs in the wet. So, that wouldn't be of concern for me.

Nice review. I have ordered an i4 M Sport pro/tech and due on mid December. Currently drive 520D M Sport so i5 seems the better upgrade but seems like i5 lead times are 6-8 months. Do you think it's worth waiting 6-8 months for the i5 or have an i4 for next 3 years? :)

I drove an i5 RWD recently and it was amazing; comparable to my Tesla Model 3 LR AWD. No other EV compares to the Tesla, which I want to dispose of for political reasons.

Very nice review. It's a smart looking car all right. I would be very interested to see a dedicated review of the Harman Kardon vs the B&W audio system. Based on what I can see in the configurator, the number of speakers and power output of both appear to be somewhat limited. So although the B&W in this I5 may look optically comparable as the one inside the I7, I suspect it's gonna be a whole different league (in favor of the I7..). Curious to hear your sound impressions! 🙂

Thanks glad you liked the review! There won't be a dedicated audio review for the i5 unfortunately, at least there's no plan for it right now. However, what I will say is that the mids and the soundstage just weren't as impressive as the one found in the i7.

Hi again, Did you analyze the matter of electromagnetic fields in ev and phev cars? I am a bit afraid that my e-tron can produce some of dangerous electromagnetic field especially for my daughter. I bought even electromagnetic field tester and got high results in Lexus nx which I wanted to buy…e-tron according do the results that I got seems to be find but as we test all wltp and exhaust emissions we should also check this for ev cars…

Let’s be honest. The i5 M60 is just too expensive for what you get. $95K for what?? A slower EV that has inferior performance and way too much competition that is just plain better for much less. I already see used i5 M60s coming back used with literally not but a few hundred miles on them. The owners found out fast just how much regret they had when they got smoked by other EVs costing literally $40K less!! And the worst part is the i5 is not eligible for any tax credits. Bottom line, BMW needs to wake up and lower their prices in order to be more competitive. Ford has learned this lesson the hard way and finally lowered the price of the Mach-E GT to match the price of the Tesla Model Y Performance.

Glad you liked the review, but as the other person said, the Model Y isn't anywhere near of a comparison. Of course, it's more practical and offers better range but elsewhere the BMW is far superior - driving comfort, interior, design, and technology.

After testing the Tesla Y, VW ID.4, Ford Mach-E, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and BMW iX, we bought a BMW i4 e40 msport. The iX was too big and too expensive. Compared to the i4, the others all had worse driving dynamics and lower quality fit and finish. Over 20,000 miles and one winter, the lifetime power consumption has been 3.9 mi/kWh. We routinely get 4.0 or a bit higher on long highway trips at 5 mph over the posted limit. The i4 replaced our SUV and the back holds whatever we need to haul. Couldn’t be happier with it. The price was around $64K USD.

Seriously overpriced ... 100K for an all wheel drive is just crazy. The all wheel drive vehicle should not exceed 55K and loaded with options 70K tops . I don't believe this car is going to sell well at all either on the company car fleet or private buyers. This is all going to be down to contract hire monthly charge with a very high final balloon payment to make it work. BMW need to address costs of cars as they not Porsche cars but coming close to Porsche prices
