Ye sure is such an exotic car, if i buy it sure i pay extra 500 £ for lights, all the car is about lights ... as a BMW fan so disappointed that they didn't fit a proper engine (even after so many years!!) in this : for me maybe the most beautiful car, but so slow!! look at the SF90 today!!!

Hi Joe, excellent review of the i8 roadster. I've followed you since the early days and recently posted the pics of my son and I when we meet in London at the last Gumball event (2016?) on twitter. I feel then able to say the quality is now pushing Mr JWW, yes I truly mean that. The drone shots, the editing and the thought that went into the filming came through! You've now set a high bar. BMW UK - This vlogger probably accounted for double figure percentage points of your M135i / M140i sales, he can do the same with the M2 if it merits it (I think he probably even increased the sales of the old M2s given he bought one and vlogged about it) so get him behind the wheel of the new M2 and give him the time to produce more quality material like this one (lets say a week, or a weekend at a push :). Definitely some kind of percentage bump in sales of the M140i, and possibly a percentage bump on the options list (see little-known rear seat pass-through with cargo net on mine which arrives directly from Leipzig in 2 days).

Brilliant video Joe! As others have commented, the drone shots at sunrise are just epic. Roadster looks and sounds like a great all round road car. Has an interestingly broad range of ability. You make some really interesting and worthwhile points here. Others may be 'better' cars, but may be too focussed to be properly usable all the time, as this one is. One where you don't look like a prat in town too, thanks to silent electric mode. Love the colour inside and out. The i8 is one of the best looking cars ever IMHO. Certainly the best in recent years. It's unlike anything else. The roadster just builds on that. 135 big ones though. That must be pretty serious cash to anyone. Also, having sat in an i8, I'm not convinced the interior looks £100k's worth. Lots of recognisable BMW parts from models further down the range, even if the overall design is cool. Coupé i8s do depreciate pretty rapidly too, so this will probably best bought second hand in a couple of years. Still, I do think BMW really pushed the boat out on this one. I'm not sure they make that much money on them, even at these prices. All that carbon fibre and tech development doesn't come cheap. I think that's why they've cut the odd corner on some of the switchgear. No doubt about it, BMW definitely deserve credit for having the balls and foresight to bring something like this to market. I’ve seen the i8 beat a V8 Audi R8 and a BMW M4 standard I think the i8 is decently fast not worth the M6 price tag but still a quick car. What BMW needs to do is easily take out the rear useless seats and take out the useless trunk as well. Put at least the I6 from the M4 and it is possible to put the 4.4i from the upcoming M8 into it as well. Put fat tires from the M5 and stick on some nice rims from the M2 and M4 competition rims. Than we have a sick car 600HP and plus the 130HP electric engine and we’re talking 720-750HP easily. If I had the time and money omg I would do it!!!

The 4 cylinder is installed in Minis and the X1/X2 so it should be able to fit in the i8.

I agree with the overall concept of the S63Tu being front mid (like the AMG GT) or mid-rear mounted with the electric motor at the front to give more traction. However it won't happen with the current i8 or possibly ever. The best you could hope for is the B48 in a high state of tune for the current chassis. FWIW as an owner of an M6 Comp Pack Coupe and having driven the F90 M5 as well as every other high performance BMW including the i8 my dream replacement car would be the new M8 with the setup I suggested above of a front mounted electric motor to give you 4wd rather than a driveshaft to the front. Hopefully with the batteries at the back and moving the engine backwards it would sort out the weight balance issue the F90 has (about 55% front) The last time I drove one was actually on Alpine xDrive here in NZ and it was much harder for me to hold sideways in the big drifting loop than the M2 and M3/4 which are all about 51% front weight. A number of other people said the same thing to me afterwards that they found it a bit more difficult than the other cars too.

Just not sure I see the appeal of it, especially for £135k (albeit including options). If it were me, I’d stick in a few more quid and get the new NSX - true supercar performance, ultimate Honda reliability, and I think it looks amazing. Have you driven one Joe? As always, great video - probably your best footage to date! Been watching your channel for a good year or so - keep it up 👍🏼.

I've not driven the NSX, but believe they're close to £180k and they don't offer a drop top version, so you would compare it to the £110k i8 Coupe, £70k is a lot of difference. But I can imagine the NSX is far quicker and more of a supercar, does it run electric only?

Joe Achilles very good point about the convertible thing, wasn’t thinking about that! Yeah it has an electric only mode, and then 580 horses when everything is working together. I’ve only been a passenger in one, as a good friend of mine is a Sales Manager at a Honda dealer, but my god is fast! £145k is base price for one, so not a million miles off the i8. Only thing that really lets the Honda down for costing so much is the god awful Garmin based infotainment / nav, but then again I don’t think there is any manufacturer that matches BMW in that department.

To me the i8 has only made sense in countries who tax (company) cars based on emissions. If you only look at the MSRP the i8 is just way out of its depth when you consider the likes of R8's and 911 GTS' at essentially the same price point. But over here in Belgium for example running the i8 as a company car would only cost you around 450 euros/month for your personal tax bill (the 450 gets added to your personal taxable income) and for the company the amortisations would be 100% deductible from the pre-tax results. In comparison a 911 GTS would add roughly 1600 euros a month to your taxable income and amortisations would only be deductible for 50%.

The hybrid aspect of this car just feels like a gimmik to me... why didn't they just make it fully electric? Why would you buy this over a tesla model S if you're looking for a sporty electric or a hybrid? why would you pay 100k for this? In terms of a hybrid, it doesn't go very far at all on electric power, and it's petrol engine is weak on its own. Seems like you're just gonnna set it to hold charge most of the time you will drive it anyway... so why not just get model s if you're looking for a sporty electric? I understand why this car is appealing, the chassis, design, engineering, exclusivity are all things that come to mind.. but interms of looking at it as a car to buy and own and use, it makes little sense to me as a Mechanical/Aeronautical Engineer. I guess this is the kind of car you get when you let your engineers have fun, and you know what, I am glad that bmw still let their engineers explore their crazy ideas. I love it, but at the same time, I am struggling to understand it.. It's like dating in a way
