BMW Isetta restoration Ep 8 Rust removal and protection process

You should consider welding in a modified battery seat in order to house a normal cheap 36 Ah VW etc. battery, which will work fine in an Isetta. This battery seat may be shorter than the original one, but a few centimeters broader - which means you have to place the combined voltage regulator and starter relais (all in the little aluminium housing) a few centimeters further back (you cannot go further to the front, as there would be a traverse bar of the chassis in your way), but you don't have to modify the wiring lengths, it will fit happily. The modern-size 36 Ah VW battery is cheap and easy to find, while you would not be happy to have to search for and pay for a very rare Isetta original-size Isetta battery (which is longer and less in width), it would cost you at least four times the amount! And you will have to replace the battery now and then. You should do this modification now, while you are welding anyway and before paintwork. Though this is not "original", it is sensible and invisible from the outside.
