I've got 33,000 miles on my GTL and it still gives me a thrill every time I ride it. Very comfortable for long distance touring. I usually run 200 miles between stops. On hot days it is without question the coolest fairing bike I have every owned, virtually no heat off the engine. I have ridden Gold Wings for 20 years with little bad to say about the Wings. I've ridden the new Harleys and found them comfortable but extremely boring. The BMW is a world class long distance ride, or cruise around town in 6th gear all day. Bend the throttle and you've got a sport bike. Best all round bike I have owned or ridden in 48 years.

Although I'm not a motorcycle rider, I like that it has the typical inline-6 sound that the BMW automobile engines make. The apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. If I ever got into motorcycles, I'd want to ride a BMW. Between the GS series and these, there's no doubt they seem to make the best motorcycles in the world, from a geek's perspective.

I've owned the 1600 GTL for four years now. It truly is a machine that meshes sport bike performance and handling with a luxury touring profile. I understand that there is a chip that will boost the already awesome performance significantly, but that chip is only available in the U.K. Not that I think I need it. I ride mine conservatively, saving it's potential for the right time and place.

I just put on Michellin Pilot Road 4GT on my GTL and it handles like stung rabbit and incredibly agile for this big bike. I can easily do U-turns on full lock in parking lots etc. Stunning for fast cornering too with a high degree of confidence. Confidence is needed and quickly learnt on this stunning bike which is such a pleasure to ride over long distances and sweeping-tight turns. Don't let its sheer size hinder you, it is very light once it gets going. I'd take it to bed with me except my wife would object. Hopefully I'll post a GoPro vid here when I figure out some editing procedures etc.

I normally ride a BMW GS 1200 Adventure but did a whole Europe tour with this "space ship". It is a superb bike first of all. I think its a massive fail to compare a bike with a car or other "noise making two wheeled vehicles". The performance was mind blowing. We were two up and fully loaded and yet it was climbing those alps like we riding flat and empty. It needs attention while doing sharp cornering as such yet it does surprise with an agility which im used from the adventure. Highway travel is a blast as that thing "moves forward". The electronics working very well and taking good care of critical situations e.g. on a very rainy day we had to pass tram tracks in a little village. Everybody who is into riding would know that this can turn into a nightmare. Rear wheel got caught in one of the rails and we did slide a bit but the traction control took care of it and with a bit counter steering and balancing we stayed on wheels....long story short its a superb bike for long trips anywhere on this planet.

It's a great bike, no doubt - but for reliability and flat out durability and comfort, I'll take my Goldwing 1800. I know people with well over 200,000 miles on their Wings and they just keep going. Still, if you're a tecnho freak and have to have sports bike like power - the BMW will do. But my next bike will be a Moto Guzzi - when you ride one of those things, it takes you back to how motorcycling used to be - it's extremely visceral. Just a man and a machine and the thump of that awesome motor. No frills or baskets full of stuff to go wrong. But hey - everybody loves what they ride - there ain't no use in arguing about it :)
@gabbyhayes15688 жыл бұрын

I also had the Goldwing and whilst its a great bike.. the K1600GTL will leave it behind in all stakes... comfort, reliability and durability...
@Rogdog6920027 жыл бұрын
That comment is unfair. No disputing the reliability of the Goldwing. But the K1600 hasn’t been around for decades, give it time to either prove it or not. But, I do hear ...endlessly.... comments like ‘it’s a BMW, so you know it is reliable’. Owned a few bikes over the years, and the BMW was by far the most finicky and fragile. Maybe I had a bad experience... but I don’t assume anything when I see those letters.

You have, of course, ridden one? I remember the same stupid comments when manufacturers brought out electronic ignition and again when fuel injection appeared. Any real men out there want to go back to points and flooding carbs? Yes, it's not light. But considering what's in it, it's pretty good. There's plenty of other makes that are heavier that wouldn't get a sniff at it. Harleys, Hondas, etc. I bought my 2012 GT in June, I've done 7000 since and the only problem is that I can't stay off it. I've driven on roads with grass growing in the middle, no shortage of those in Ireland. It's one of the best all rounders I've ridden in 40+ years of motorcycling. According to the COMPUTER it's averaging 55 mpg. That's UK gallons. I did let it fall over. My fault. I'm 58 and short in the leg. As an experienced motorcyclist I was able to get it back up myself using a well known technique. Maybe you should stick to your 400 Honda.
@calmoto907310 жыл бұрын
That's what I'm talkin' about! Ride on:)
@BlueSky-qv7cd10 жыл бұрын
Your point is well made, but their has to be a happy medium between reliability and over complicated. I worked on Aircraft for 20 years and I can say without a doubt that electronics was the most difficult system to troubleshoot and the most costly to repair in an aircraft, yes electronic ignition is more reliable than points but no system is 100 percent, and points are dirt cheap to replace compared to electronic ignition components, Use electronics where they offer obvious advantages, but curtail them where they would add cost to long term reliability.
@Roadghost8810 жыл бұрын
Rodney B Jennings Exactly. Modern fuel injection and computer controlled ignitions are a revolution in reliability, especially for the mechanically-retarded who always flooded their carburetors. But the slew of unnecessary electro-toys and computer gizmos on these new bikes adds weight and complication and reduces reliability. When these things start to go (and they will, sooner than you think) nobody knows how to fix them and price to repair is extravagant. And 55 imperial mpg? What a joke (that's about 44mpg U.S. for those unknowing). There's sports cars doing better than that. I don't care what anyone says, nobody needs 1600cc on a motorcycle, even for performance riding. But...it's a free and decadent country so don't let me stop you from buying what you want. Just remember you can have just as much (or more) fun with something smaller and less cumbersome.
@johndwilliams10 жыл бұрын
Why is it aero-space engineers always comment on these sort of things? Or is it always you that replies, Rodney? If I rode my bike at 20,000 feet I would be inclined to agree. But I don't. Not much. Electro-toys? Computer gizmos? Flooding carbs? Expressions like that make you sound like you're older than me, Roadghost! Think you need to clean those rose tinted glasses. You are both missing the point. This time last year I was riding a 30 year old BMW K100 'brick'. Complete with fuel injection and electronic ignition. ABS didn't come in until about 1989. Then I found myself in the fortunate position of being able to buy whatever I wanted. I wanted a BMW K1600GT. In red. That's it. Didn't want a Harley. Didn't want a GS. Didn't want a 400 Honda. But I do respect anyone else's reasons for wanting a particular model of bike and while I may take the piss, I'm happy for them. In ten years, maybe it will be unreliable, maybe we'll all be dead. Or maybe I'll be riding something else because it is too damned heavy for me. Whatever! Stop sounding like grumpy old men. On the subject of fuel consumption. I did a quick search and found this quote from the website of one of the UK's leading motorcycle insurers, Bennetts, on a review of the K1600GT. 'Ride by wire throttle delivery and BMW’s clever closed-loop fuelling system ensures excellent fuel economy. We ran through a week of ‘normal’ ride to work mileage and averaged a creditable 56.4mpg while solo with empty panniers.' Sounds about right to me and is echoed on other reviews. Providing you aren't riding around like Cal Moto, with your bum on fire! Incidentally, the engine is actually 1650cc. You know, smaller than most Harleys. I hope that you guys are as happy with your chosen steeds as I have been with my big, red K1600GT.
@Roadghost8810 жыл бұрын
John Williams Not trying to scare you John. It is a beautiful bike and I'm sure a pleasure to ride. I trust you made a calculated decision about the longevity of the electronics when you bought, since you're clearly a learned rider. I hope it serves you as well as the boxer did. I suspect you'll be fine for the first few years with the new bike, most are. Past that let us know. I own a 1340cc Harley Davidson, which suits myself fine and gets similar fuel mileage to your BMW. I often wonder if I couldn't do the same with a smaller, lightweight well featured bike though. I believe it would be a good direction for motorcycle manufacturers to go. You like your bike, and that is all that matters. Happy riding.

It's too bad they haven't made a K1600S or RS. The main reason i would buy one it's that peach of an engine. I guess the only thing that would make it even better would be a DCT option. aterseraph Cal Moto I own the first model year of this bike (2012). It's hard to stay off the throttle, it feels like you're flying an F14 jet. Even though this bike is heavy, you can simply blip the throttle at 20 mph and pull the front wheel off the road. I've done a few 3,000 mile road trips with my wife and I can agree, there is no substitute.

@jjayallan9 жыл бұрын
Well thank you, I won't be buying that bike, It seems 6 cyl. Should sound like a Harley, but smoother...I heard a Yamaha 1300 4 cyl. SAME WHINE, OH NO

+J.A. Jones Venture riders, myself included, call that whine you're referring to the "chirp". Sounds like a high-pitched chirping sound. Very annoying at first, but now I hardly notice it over the sound of my Barron Nasty Boy slip-ons. lol They'd wake the dead.

Spectacular example of over complication. Surely an interesting bike to ride with all those buttons to press. They probably take up half your riding attention. Of course, with BMW I can't imagine how easy it is to repair when all those electrical components begin to go wrong (probably shortly after the warranty expires) especially at the side of the road. Then there's the 1600cc engine, 1000cc's of which no rider will ever need, but will go ga-ga over anyway. Throwing fuel consumption to the wind never seems to hurt motorcycle manufacturers either. You wonder how they get away with it? What happens to those pretty fairings and accessories if the bike falls over? How easy is it to get a 1600cc bike back upright in say, gravel? Can we ever get a video of the technique used? Surely a great bike if all goes well, but sooner or later it doesn't. I guess that's when you buy another bike, or quit riding, or just buy a little 400cc Honda and do all the same things with less hassle and more fun.

Don't listen to the naysayers Cal. I like the way you ride. Ride that way myself quite often. What's the point of having a bike like this if you're going to go down the road like a Volkswagen beetle.

The most important part of the video…the first 2 minutes were a total waste!!! Did you not realize you were totally in the dark and all you had to do was move the bike ahead a little to be in the sun light so we could see what you were trying to show??? Did you not watch the video before you posted it??? So disappointing…..but yes…it's an awesome bike!!!

All BMW K1600 have serious issue - They all pull to the left! My one pull so hard that if I barely touch handlebar in split second I am on left lane. ( after hour ride my shoulder is in agony from constant pull handlebar to correct it and BMW don’t seem see the problem like I will not pay £ 24000) And after owning this bike for 3 months from brand new and having already swap engine for new one I can truly said it’s crappy bike. Go do yourself favor and bike Japanese bike

I've never understood why someone would buy a bike like this instead of a car. You can't filter easily, you don't have the performance of a sport bike and it's not as practical as a car for traveling.

+theodoro89 I feel the same way.

+theodoro89 Specially if you don't have the skills to ride a two wheeled vehicle stick with 4 wheels. Its like bungee jumping or sitting on the sofa eating some cheeto's, some people have big balls some have small.
@theodoro899 жыл бұрын
hanna554 It's not about "balls" but practicality. I would prefer driving in the rain/snow instead of riding. I believe that's common sense and not "big or small balls"
@hanna5549 жыл бұрын
+theodoro89 That's true from the standpoint of someone who doesn't love to ride I can see your point but most of us that love to ride have a car or suv to handle the rain and snow. Have a good one.

I have K1600GTL 2012 at 40.00km, but it has down with timing chain jump. It didn't start up after i turned engine off for motor heat up warning at 1400km away from my home. I never suggest to any of interested potantial buyer the bmw motorcycle. I bought it with big dream and future tour plan. Motor was full serviced by local official bmw dealer always on time. Germany motorrad head management refuse to cover problem also. They ask me 20.000USD to fix. Never buy it. Or buy it for only listen music with it.
