We need more of these systems explained vids and you should put that in the title for searches. Great job as always, this is the reason I never updated my e38 to a newer year (well that and the TU, ohh and the A5S 440Z).

Yes, that a good plan - the later ones have a bit more grunt - but a lot more problems!

Hi Timm. Very informative video. I have an E34 535i Sport with Drive by Wire (like the E32 735i that had them too) that I 'thought' was in 'limp mode'... I had a flat battery and jump-started it (yes I've only now seen your video on NOT jump starting old BMW's!) and since then I've had the EML light show up. Even with the ignition out, it stays on! The only way it disappears is with the battery disconnected. The result is, I have slow acceleration/throttle response. The car is not limited by revs, but it's just slow. My cruise control still works if that helps. I've tried a spare EML throttle body that I have, and I have the same symptoms. I've been advised that the instrument cluster could have been shorted or developed an issue since the jump start. Where do you think I should be looking to sort this?
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation2 жыл бұрын
That sounds like the EML module has come a cropper - they can still be found on Ebay and don't need coding. The instrument cluster has no bearing on the fault, the bulbs (there are two) for the EML are directly connected to the EML module

I have a 06/98 750il with engine fail safe prog error. How can I confirm my throttle bodies are functioning correctly?

Use INPA, you can read out the throttle positions...

can u pls do a video about fuel economy? My mechanic and me are both a both shocked by the amount of fuel my 04 plate 645ci uses. I s it normal to use the amount of fuel I am using just by idling?Is there something wrong or is it just something to expect considering the engine? What is the norm etc?
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation2 жыл бұрын
Idle should be between 20 - 25 Kg/h as measured by diagnostics - overall around 25 miles per UK Gallon

Some e34 M30 powered cars came with drive by wire throttle. I haven't seen one, but I know they exist.

There were a few, once the M70 was doing well, the M30 was "upgraded' to electronic throttle. But they behaved differently

One thing I wish you would have mentioned is the N62 and Variable Valve Lift do-away with any throttle butterfly control, so attributing a electronic throttle body is just not accurate. Instead the valvetronic valve lift system operated by valvetronic motor (one per cylinder bank). This system is an entire generation beyond electronic operated throttle butterfly. The Valvetronic system varies the intake valve opening lift between 0.3 mm and 9.85 mm by rotating the eccentric shaft during engine operation to increase or decrease intake (flow) into the cylinder based on throttle request. Because of this, the throttle valve is left fully open and the intake manifold operates under full atmospheric pressure.

Doesnt the s70b56 have an electronic throttle body?
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation2 жыл бұрын
Hello Marcus, I did mention that several times in the video and tried to refrain from using throttle body - using engine power instead - but I missed a few! However, the N62 does use throttle body control in various circumstances, when first started and after full throttle application. I have covered this in other videos when showing how to test the Valvetronic with INPA. Even saying that, it is a fallacy that the throttle butterfly stays fully open, it doesn't, it constantly adjusts its position to maintain vacuum in the inlet manifold to keep the crankcase ventilation system working.
@wacabby2 жыл бұрын
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation Interesting ! I'm still learning these concepts. Quoted from the N62 engine training manual; "The throttle valve is controlled so that there is always a 50 mbar vacuum in the intake manifold. The pressure control valve regulates the crankcase pressure to a low 0-30 mbar." After 60 seconds of engine operation, the throttle valve is used to regulate a 50 mbar vacuum. 50 mbar is 1.5 inHG . The remainder of engine load control is performed by the valve lift.

That was interesting. I hate this trend where they look at the speed of the throttle as an interpretation of what acceleration the driver actually wants. To me, it's a bit like food tasting panels where jo public always likes the one with more salt in it. Last time I got to drive my E23 I absolutely loved how the gearbox changes gear precisely at how far you press the throttle not how fast you press it like on the E38

Never had this issue with cruise control. In fact its much better and stable than more modern cars. If you hold the revs stable and switch to sport mode you can feel the car push forward and the power delivery is instant.
