It isn't inevitable that you are going to have problems with Valve Stem Seals, the Coolant Transfer Pipe, Oil Leaks from everywhere and Harsh Gear Changes with the N62 Engine.
You can avoid these problems if you follow the advice here - don't leave it until you are puffing out smoke and leaking coolant, it may be too late. If you act before these problems show themselves then you can avoid getting them altogether

I had all but sworn off these generations of the bmw v8, you single handedly restored my desire to give it one more shot with a proper taken care of one. My wife's favorite cars ever were her e60 545i and 550i but eventually we had all the common issues you talked about and spent thousands upon thousands repairing them. It's nice to know you can make them long term reliable vehicles as they are an absolute dream to own.

I work in software and a big concept I’ve learned is bugs in software have a root cause. I really enjoy your videos because you attempt to explain the root cause of issues. Components fail randomly, but most the time they fail to a root cause, and just throwing parts at a car isn’t always the answer. Appreciate the videos thanks

I bought my 2004 645 Ci about three years ago. After about a month the engine smoked like no tomorrow. Rings were checked; ok. Turned out to be the valve stem seals. Luckily it was still under warranty. It disappeared for a few weeks and came back beautiful. I guess I was lucky to catch it so soon after buying it.

Dear Tim! Thank you for your detailed videos and advice. This helps us e63/e64 lovers a lot to keep their car alive for a long time. For me, as a non-native English speaker and non-mechanic, it is very difficult to get a good overview and to understand everything exactly. Could you imagine creating a maintenance plan that says exactly when, after what mileage and with which oils, seals and spare parts which work is to be carried out? We could then give this document to our workshop. That would help a lot and I would be happy to pay for it. Is there a chance? Thanks very much!

Hi Tim, on the gearbox, I spent perhaps a few years trying to pin point the harsh shifts. As you mentioned oil, filter and mechatronic seals are crucial to change however the biggest difference I saw was with a software update for the EGS. All the clunking and shifts just disappeared immediately. Also the solenoids have a high failure rate and so changing just the shift solenoids while you have the valve body out is also a good idea.

Coolant pipe, Alt Bracket seal, and valve stem seals. now it’s the abs module, and logic 7 amp rebuild time. Great advice Tim! I’ve owned a 2004 645ci for about 6 yrs now and 48k miles (bought it at 70k miles now it’s about 118k ). Two other proactive maintenance fixes I recommend on older models 6 series...one is the upper radiator hose ($95 USD) which will likely come apart at a not so ideal time and leave you stranded. The second is the right and left side Crank Case Vent Valve Breather Hoses ($59 USD for the set). Especially if you currently have the older version Y pipe that connects both sides at the center. This hose gets dry rot and brittle from the heat and will split and crack causing major misfires across all cylinders due to the vacuum leak. These preventative repairs are a must do as well if one plans to keep their N62 in good order for the duration of ownership. Cheers!

Jesse Salmi similar happened to me a few weeks back. Spent the morning detailing the car, headed out on a road trip with the Mrs.. Got on the interstate and accelerated hard to cross lanes and lost power. Windshield was freckled with water droplets so I knew I blew a hose. Exited the interstate and found the top radiator hose split in half at the plastic connection. Luckily I had a few assorted hose clamps in the boot. No tools though...so used the wife’s tweezers to tighten the clamp. Let the car cool down roadside. Then limped a few miles to the auto parts store to refill the coolant enough to get me home an additional 2 miles. Ordered the new OEM hose on Amazon and replaced it in 10 minutes. It was a crap day but it could have been a lot worse...better yet it could have been prevented had I replaced the hose at 100k miles. Ps...small metal hook tool and extra long flathead screw driver to pop the clips made the job a piece of cake.

Excellent video Tim. Another sad issue with the 650i is the cost of body damage repairs after an accident. The aluminum components are very expensive to fix leading insurance companies to just scrap the car and paying you the low wholesale price. That said, if you do need parts these vehicles are starting to show up regularly in salvage yards. Although many of these places think they are BMW dealers and believe all BMW owners a very rich. Also mention to everyone to change power steering fluid, and replace brake fluid regularly.

Seen this video at around 300 and never thought that would of had played a part of it so ordered a set and replaced them and like you said after 400km or so the start up smoke went away! It’s not a Honda Civic, and it can’t be treated like it. If you take care of it, it will take care of you. That’s what I’ve learned during my years of BMW ownership. Need to change oil annually with BMW oil; change coolant every 3 years with BMW coolant; have PCV valve checked annually?; add Wynn's oil conditioner annually? which engine and transmission does this car have and do I need to do any proactive service on the transmission other than what BMW recommends. Love your channel!

Drove an N62B44 (545i) for 100,000 km. The car would start in the open loop but not go to closed loop by itself. The solution was starting, driving 100m, stop and restart the car. In almost every occasion, the engine would run in closed loop then. The engine already had the known coolant leaking problem (rubber O ring wearing out causing leaks; impossible to resolve financially) but it did not get worse. Refilling coolant every 4-6 months was sufficient. It would sometimes blow some smoke upon driving away after idling for more than a minute. But this was occasionally. BMW = oil leaks. Valve cover, other areas. It's a marriage, those two. Gear changes were rough when cold, but nice once warmed up. I never had the gearbox flushed. Now driving a B58. It's more modern, faster and efficient (and no restarting needed), but I do miss that V8. It was worth the trouble.

I have owned my E63 650i for over 6 months and it was all because of your amazing videos. Quick question regarding the N62 engine, is it always going to be the case that minor oil leaks shall exist? I have a very small weep and was wondering whether it's worth looking into or just accept that an old V8 shall always have this issue.

Well, only speaking for myself, yes they always have a leak somewhere - and unless it is somewhere that is causing damage (like getting oil into the alternator) I don't really mind as long as it is pretty small!

I was an apprenitice mechanic for a austin rover dealer when I left school back in 1988 the service schedules back then were every 6,000 miles and depending on the milage what items to service change. I get time and techonolgy has moved on oils have come on from the 20w/50 treacle that was used back then but it just makes sense to change the oil every year mine goes in for service every mot which is round about 5-6k a year on high stressed engines your playing russian roulete if you don't. The statement you made about the food chain is so true 60k car gets bmw love for a owner or two gets to 10years or so than gets abused and ends up as baked bean cans by the time its done 150k just like my poor old e60 once I sold it only had 3 owners now someones killed it.I was the third before I moved on

Thank you SO MUCH for your incredibly informative and helpful videos!! (SO glad I found you!) I have a 2000 740iL and a 2006 650i convertible. The 650i is showing "multiple leaks" and my local garage said I have to "replace or fix" the coolant transfer pipe -- quoting ~$4,000 USD to "fix" with stent. I paid $13,500 for it in 2017 and have only paid about $3,000 in total repairs since then (+ oil changes consistently each year, using only synthetic oil...) I got it with 89k miles and now have 103k miles. It's still very clean with only unnoticeable minor scratches on hood and front bumper, otherwise flawless and everything works great... I really want to keep it, but do you think it would be a mistake to pay for repair & keep?

Dear Timm, I've recently encountered an issue with my right window (E63 650i 2009). It doesn't work anymore as I use the window control panel. I then went to a local triple A service center and they stated that it was the window motor that was broken. After they put everything back on, I went back and forth several times to the service center to fix the follow-up problems they brought me such as a the right door was not installed correctly (there was a big gap between the interior and the door cover), airbag mulfunction, speaker not working, and etc. Most importantly, the right window air vent was shattered due to their carelessness when they installed the door interior (the little air outlet that is adjacent to the window and the triangle speaker. It would be easier if I could sent you a picture and explain). They now told me that they are looking for the part name for several days, but I don't trust them anymore after all this and I want to attempt to replace this part by myself. However, I couldn't find the part name/number of this specific plastic air vent anywhere online. After viewing several videos of yours I can tell that you have real knowledge and passion of those BMW cars. So I comment here to see if I could get some information from you. Do you know the part name of the air vent that is adjacent to the door windows and where can I order it from?

@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation

My car is on 103K miles. It's always had regular servicing including oil changes every year with the Castrol FST (changed on time and not waiting for the iDrive to recommend it.) I've also been gadding the Wynn's in recent years. That's kept my valve stem seals in good shape with no leaks (yet!). My 650 has done 82k with no problems with either the valve seals, or alternator bracket so maybe my investment with good oils is paying off. I’m currently replacing oil at a max of 2 yrs, at 2kmiles per year. Do you think adding a can of wyns at the end of year 1 be sufficient? I didn’t know the oil or water had special seal preserving additives so that’s really interesting. I’ve just pulled my 540 apart to replace vanos seals at 84k. I know this engine has had synthetic oil from new and the engine is unbelievably clean, just like new. The water ways too! In contrast my previous 1998 M62 535 was only run on semi-synthetic and that engine had a horrid orange tint. So many thanks for the info.
