I feel like I came in on the middle of something. What the heck is the EML and what does it do?
@VITOSGARAGE
@VITOSGARAGE 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry.. I should have explained that in the video.. EML is a very important part of this particular BMW. The acronym “EML” stands for “Elektronische Motorleistungsregelung" which is an electronic system controlling both electronic throttle bodies through the electronic fuel pedal. There’s no mechanical gas cable from the gas pedal to the throttle bodies, it’s all electronically controlled. There’s also an EML module itself that plays a big role in this whole EML system. Now, when you turn the Ignition ON, the EML light on the cluster needs to come on and go out if everything is working properly. If the EML light stays on, that means that there’s a fault in the system and your car will be usually in limp mode. However, in the case of this car, when you turn the Key ON, the EML light wouldn’t come on on the cluster at all… And the EML module needs to see the feed of the EML bulbs but it didn’t. The EML light was never coming on. And because of that, we had no acceleration and it was in limp mode. The EML module wasn’t letting the throttle bodies to open all the way. Once I found a break in the wire and fixed it, the EML light comes on and goes out, meaning, there’s no faults in the EML system and EML module sees the EML bulbs. This allows throttle bodies to come back to live and be fully controlled. A little complicated system but pretty sophisticated for 1992! A lot of Bimmers with electronic throttles have EML system. I hope I explained it well enough. So sorry for not explaining this in the video…

@@VITOSGARAGE Thanks Vito, I understand now. Of course it's a long ass German word. Lol. And to think I used to be able to speak it when I was a kid. I do remember a video on "Wheeler Dealer" that they got a car, I don't remember what, that had electronic throttle and they had to repair it. I think it was a bit simpler. That does seem to be a very smooth running v12. Nice old car. Thanks again!

@@VITOSGARAGE EML is primarily BMW's electronic throttle control, but it also does double duty as a vehicle speed limiter (speed limited to 155 miles per hour, although aftermarket chips can delete the limiter. The E32 has been unofficially tested at between 160 miles per hour and 170 miles per hour with the limiter disabled. The EML system also manages the V12 as two inline six cylinder engines. It was a pretty cutting edge system back in 1988.

Great recovery. I have an E34 535i with EML. Since a flat/dead battery, I've had a constant EML light on, even with the key out of the ignition it still shows! I've read that when your battery drops below 11v the EML can be triggered. When the battery went flat, I got locked out of the car. So I opened the trunk with the key and I put jump cables on my amplifier power lead in the trunk and ground to the trunk latch to get some power to open the car door. I then fitted a new battery. For a few hours yesterday the EML turned on then off as it should and I had good throttle and took the car for a good drive. Then by the evening, it happened again. Where should I be looking to sort this out? The new battery voltage is fine and I've done the OBC test #9 to see the charging capacity from the alternator and the readings seem fine I believe. Do you think it could be a faulty alternator or bad ground somewhere? It was fine before the flat battery incident. Any help would be much appreciated.

Just an FYI - ALL of the 740s and 750s had electronic throttles. Some 735s had manual throttles, some had electronic throttles. It's pretty self evident which is which. The non-electronic throttles used a conventional throttle cable. Thanks for a great video!

Vito can you tell me the difference between the E-34 ,and the E-32, other than the engine E-34 is usually a 6 cylinder and the 540 is an 8 cylinder, the E-42 which is the 7 series usually is a 12 cylinder but basically the same body style as the E-34 except wider
@houseofno
@houseofno 3 жыл бұрын
E34 is 1989 to 1996 5-series. E32 is 1988 to 1994 7-series. No such platform as an E42. The E34 and E32 shared some powertrains and several other parts. E34 is sort of a 3/4 size E32. Styling is similar but still different between the vehicles. E34 was styled to be slightly sportier looking than the E32. E34 was also available in a wagon bodystyle which the E32 was not. E34 also had an M5 version, which did NOT share its S36/S38 M-engine with the E32. E34 also had an M42/M44 four cylinder in some markets (not US), had M20 2.5L 12-valve six cylinder not available in larger E32 putting out 168 hp, but then moved to an M50 24V 2.5L inline six putting out 189 hp. The 3.5L M30 inline six put out 211 hp in catalyzed US spec shared with the E34. This engine was replaced in both cars by the M60/M62 32V V8 putting out 282 horsepower. E34 offered both manual and automatics for the V8. E32 had manual transmission ONLY for the M30 until it was quietly phased out after 1990 due to slow sales. E32 was only offered in automatic form for both V8 and V12, however there have been aftermarket manual swaps from E34's and E31 8-series transmission swaps.

@@houseofno The reason that I say it is that I have an E34 535I and when Vito was working on that car, what I was trying to find out is the difference between the E-34 & the E-32 I was also wondering if the wire loom is compatible with the E-32, because the E-34 had the 525, 535, and the 8 cylinder 540 I would believe that the parts are compatible
@houseofno
@houseofno 3 жыл бұрын
@@EnriqueLopez-hb5jn The primary differences are size and styling. The E32 is longer (both short and long wheelbase cars) and wider. The two cars did share mechanicals and various other parts. Back then, BMW primarily had three car lines - the 3-series was BMW's entry level line; the 5-series was the mid-range line, while the 7-series was BMW's flagship, their largest and most luxurious vehicle. The E24 6-series was their midsize personal coupe that was based on the E12 1st gen 5-series from 1977 to 1981, then switched to the second-gen 5-series E28 from 1982 to 1989. The easiest way to tell the difference is the headlights and taillights. The E34's front turn signals neatly wrap around the sides of the outboard headlights. On the E32, the turn signals vertically frame the outboard headlights in a straight vertical fashion. On the taillights, the E34 taillights are taller but narrower than the E32s. The E32s tail lights are lower, wider and more of a wide L shape. Hope this helps. Which wire looms are you referring to? The engine wire looms between identical engines and powertrains should be interchangeable between the E32 and E34.

great detecive work however you should have opened the cable harness. If you have a parasidic draw then you need to investigate everything. New battery then its a huge drain. well done in finding the culprit.

Broken wire won’t cause a drain. This car has a problem with window and sunroof switches staying powered on and the illumination is on when the key is out. That’s what’s causing the drain
