Out of all hot hatches that were in my budget, the M140i had the one thing which I consider most important, lacking in other hot hatches. ... FUN !

@@mharro88 Never driven an i30N on track, but I used to work at a Hyundai dealership and drove dozens of them when they were first released. They were ok, and quick round the corners, but not 'fun' in any sense of the word. Certainly couldn't get the back end out like a RWD car as they understeered on the limit. So how many M140i's have you driven on track ?
@mharro88 Жыл бұрын
@@DjNikGnashers you haven't driven the i30n sedan then which is extremely fun. The back end kicks out and the LCD in it is better than some 100k cars. Sounds better and definitely more raw.
@DjNikGnashers Жыл бұрын
@@mharro88 Yes I have driven a few of them actually. I don't care about the screens (when you said LCD did you mean LSD LOLOL). They are not more raw matey, they are exactly the same as the hatch but in a slightly different body. I was a parts advisor and ordered enough parts for both to know they were almost identical underneath. They are ok cars, on a par with the Golf GTi for handling and almost as good quality interior, pretty decent to be honest. What they are not, is anything close to a powerful RWD car for fun.

I had both cars on a week long test drive each. The BMW was great fun to drive but the VW was more comfortable and had better technology (Android Auto, dynamic cruise control etc) and a much bigger boot and back seats. Ended up buying the VW and don't have any regrets, what a car!

G’day Joe, Great to see your Australian test drives. I purchased one of the first M135i’s in 2012 sight unseen. It was a 3-month wait but well worth it. Drove it in Far North Queensland's hot, wet conditions for a couple of years and loved it. My wife inherited it while I defected to an RS3. The RS 3 was a hoot and loved the hoon exhaust, gonna miss that but not the annoying understeer. After 3 years we’ve just purchased two new M140i’s. They do everything so well, and last of this breed has been well refined. Would've loved an M2 but two M140’s for the price of an M2 is hard not to justify.

I have had both cars, had the golf 7 R for 2 years and now have had an M140I for just over a year. The BMW undoubtedly feels quicker and not just from 0-60, when rolling it picks up so much quicker. In my opinion the BMW feels the more quality car. But I never find I have the same confidence driving the BMW fast on twisty roads than i did with the golf unless it is bone dry. This could be perception given the reassurance of the golf being RWD but the golf definitely feels more planted and controlled when pushing on. However thats not to say i prefer the drive of the golf, the golf quickly got a bit boring and in the end i wasn't that bothered to see it go, the problem with the AWD 4 pots is that they are too easy to drive fast and offer very little in the way of drama. Take the BMW out on a slightly damp day and it can be a lot of fun that you just dont get in the golf.

In a dry warmer country the 140i is the car I would want, in the UK though I'll stick with the R, purely because I can utilise its abilities at every junction/roundabout in any condition. No question though that the 140i has the better engine with vastly better sound.

To pull away quickly in pouring rain without any drama is so useful. And in last years brief London snow I was driving around, up hill etc with no issues on stock tyres. Hi comments about the DSG are valid. Had a Golf R DSG and could not gel with the DSG box at all. Very little correlation between the amount of accelerator travel and an increase in speed. Sold it and bought a manual. Needed a new clutch after 4500 miles, I now find out it is a common fault with the manual in that the clutch is not up to the job. Now have an M240i with the ZF auto and it is a car on a completely different level.

This is really a testament to how great the Golf R really is, considering VW is not a luxury brand. In the US, the Golf R can be had for $40,000 USD (42K MSRP). The tune-ability is also insane on this engine. Stage 1 (software only) will net you about 70hp/tq for about $500. As I type this it's snowing outside and I took my kid to school in my Golf R on snow tires, it's an absolute beast. There is no better all around sensible car here in the US for the money. I do wish we had the 1 series available here, what a beauty.
@TheChannel19786 жыл бұрын
Practicality/speed/build quality in one affordable package is the reason the Golf GTI is one of the most sold hatch backs globally. BMW 1-series are great cars but cost a lot more to get the same performance, also the 1 series has less luggage space/rear bench space which could make a difference for families/people needing to carry loads. I've owned several 1 series and loved them, but could only afford the cheaper 4cyl versions. Now I own an old GTI MK5 (got it very cheap from a friend) and it is surprising how fast and spacious it is. So I think the GTI is great for the money. If someobody has the budget to get a 135/140i that would be an even better drive, but the reduced space on offer due to RWD layout is noticeable.

I looked at both of these used (it's Sept 2024 as I write this), and plumped for the Golf R Special Edition, with the Akrapovic exhaust etc. The BMW was hopeless in the wet, and service/repair costs for BMWs here in Perth are astronomical. I just felt more at home in the Golf. I get the feeling most people who choose one or the other will do so on a similarly subjective basis.
@brendanfeldwick64936 жыл бұрын
Much better review than the GTI review Joe, much more your style. Hopefully this collaboration becomes a bit more regular! Sadly, I'm still rather torn between the two cars. Head says R but the heart says the M140i... The other thing that I think probably should have been mentioned is ACC - that's a big feature for 'everyday' driving that the M140i lacks, which is a real shame.
@cerberus_uwu6 жыл бұрын
I went from M135i LCI to 7.5R - (after testing a M140 LCI II and a few other cars) and it was the best move I've made.. no regrets.. some of the points in the video are also either Aussie centric or moot.. the infotainment system in the UK for example comes standard with the volume button (unless you upgrade it to the PRO), it's also 20 BHP more powerful and regarding fake sound - it's something the BMW has as well (active sound) - the virtual cockpit and infotainment system is light years ahead of BMW's offering.. (although BMW's has got better) - at least now their 'full panel display' stretches out a little more than a postage stamp in the bottom right hand corner of the instrument binnacle.. although their new hybrid system with actual dials is a bit marmite.. they';re both very good cars though and this is just nit picking between them... once you've been for a test drive of both - you'll get an idea of which one is right for you..
@brendanfeldwick64936 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm from Aussie so the points in the vid all apply to the version I'd get. I've driven both, although I need to do both back to back and go from there. I'm not really too fussed on the virtual cockpit in the R (it looks cool, but I prefer Audi's version). I think the big thing is for me is I already have a Mk 7 Golf Highline, and the interior of the new 7.5 is *mostly* the same so I wouldn't mind a bit of a change. Still, the price difference between the two is something to consider as well - you can pick up a Golf R with DAP (we get adaptive suspension standard on both models) for about 56AU, whereas the BMW price of entry is about 60-62. Not much in it, but still worth considering. Outside of the interior, how have you found the R to drive compared to the bimmer?
@cerberus_uwu6 жыл бұрын
performance wise?.. much of a muchness to be honest.. virtually nothing noticeable between them (so much so that it didn't factor into my decision)... what did was the fact that in the BMW - i could have the traction light flickering in 3rd gear on most days without trying - despite having MPSS tyres etc.. (not something you'd likely need to consider in Aus) - but in the UK on anything other than a dry day with bone dry roads (about c95% of the time) - the BMW often struggles to put its full power down (or at least there is a delay in it doing so)... if BMW brought out the X-Drive in the Uk then it would be a LOT closer decision - (and I might even have chose the 1 over the R) - but for this country and for the performance and price point, then I don't think there is any car that is better... the latest version of the R is a great drive in all weather (including snow!! - which we've had a lot of recently!!) - ALTHOUGH - I will concede that the M135i LCI i had (even with MPSS) surprised me in the snow with the traction off... nowhere near as good as the R, but I was able to get moving and drive around in it (which wasn't the case in any other BMW I've had - pre face lift 116D MSport (with goodyear runflats), BMW Z3 2.8, BMW 3 Series etc)...
@brendanfeldwick64936 жыл бұрын
Cool, thanks for the reply. I've heard much of the same thing from other owners (although it seems that there are a few going going from Mk7 R's to the LC2 M140i since the recent price drop in AU). Where I live in Melbourne it's mostly pretty dry, but the winter can be a bit wet but probably nowhere near as bad as the UK. I think one of the major put offs for me about the M140i is the ACC - I don't have it at the moment, but from everyone I've talked to they say that in the gridlock morning traffic to work, its a godsend.
@cerberus_uwu6 жыл бұрын
there are volumes of owners going in both directions!.. it's just down to personal preference or people wanting a change.. and yes the ACC does help in stop start traffic (but I very rarely use cruise control either - the R comes with both cruise control and speed limiter (a very handy feature!!) - the M140 only comes with limiter as standard or cruise control as an option - you can't have BOTH - which is also a minor annoyance I had with it!)...

The Golf R has some really cool features besides the usual power etc. The auto full beam 'dancing' lights are incredible on a dark road at night. The heated front windscreen if you have that option. The fact that it fits in any class of life and is so practical as well as fun and is generally more affordable than the BMW in servicing and any work you need doing to it. We've done 0-100km/h before in the Golf R (in fact, the exact car in this video) and it came in at 4.6 seconds. So when we did this comparison I was convinced it'd smoke the BMW. BUT, we shot the video on a hot day (about 34 degrees Celsius) and we were two up in the car (both Joe and I). So even with launch control, the Golf R was slightly slower to 100km/h - it shows you that it needs absolutely ideal conditions to hit that figure.
@Dean-mk4ky6 жыл бұрын
Latvietis96 - Although you forget to mention anywhere else around the world, the Golf R has 310bhp which the Aussie version only has 285bhp, so already disadvantaged. It would have done it in 4.6 seconds, officially. Infact some guys on the VWROC forum have had their facelift Golf R's put on a rolling road and they are producing around 326bhp stock. It's no wonder looking at some KZbin reviews around that the Golf R with DSG has been known to do 0-62 quicker than the official time.

It's mentioned in the video. I also mentioned in the previous post that we've achieved the quoted time with the car, but it's clear that it doesn't like heat and then adding passengers places it at a performance disadvantage.

Dean I think it’s the same case for the M140i regarding rated power. BMW have this car rated at a lot less than what they put out on the dyno as some people have already done this and it’s proven to be the case

We have one of each in the family. The Golf is good, and faster point to point with an average driver behind the wheel, but it isn't as fun and doesn't feel as special as the BMW.

Hey Joe great video again 👍 what fuel do you use in your cars- 135i/140i (shell v power )? 🤔

The problem with the BMW is that it’s hideous. The engine however is brilliant. Nevertheless, after test driving both I decided on the R... Never looked back since;-)

i couldn't agree more. use your vbox and do a 0-60 and 1/4 mile in the x. i've seen 1/4 miles in 12.3 but no 0-60s. how close to the rs3????
@Dani-hl3xu6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately i do not have access to a vbox however i did a couple of 0-60 runs using a timer and it did a consistent 4.4

ok i know not every test is exactly the same but if you look up car and driver one of the usa's largest car magazines they did a test with an m240i automatic and got 4.3. i'm sure they could do better with an x-drive. the s3 was slower and the rs3 was faster. what i'd really like to see is a drag race (same time, same conditions) between an rs3 and an m240ix-drive. the difference in price in canada is $12,000 but i'm sure the speeds are closer than that..?..

Bob nothing sits with the RS3 unless it has been tuned. Especially the 2018 model 400bhp stock engine

Golf R gets a huge boost through tuning like APR,. It’s ready for more and becomes a complete animal. I’m not sure why VW didn’t set it up like that from the factory...

Great honest, detailed review. I might have considered the BMW if it wasn't one of the ugliest cars ever made. Sure, it looks better than the mark 1 version originally launched but it is still seriously ugly. It would have to be so much better than the Golf in every respect to make up for its looks. And it is really only better in how it sounds, cabin quality and perhaps a whisker faster. VW for me.

Hi Joe. Do you know why m140 have bigger rear brake discs than in front? It is unusual and i asked dealer and service and they couldnt answer. Thanks.
@JoeAchilles16 жыл бұрын
It's because most BMWs are RWD and need large rotors to help with traction control, fronts are still more powerful due to larger 4 pot calipers (in the m140/240 case) Cheers

Great review Joe (as always!) I think most people would consider a Golf R if they were in the market for an M140i. You nailed the differences between them and echo my thoughts as well. Great minds and all that.... Anyway, just thought I’d say hi and keep up the good work!
