To say this is better than an RS is just totally blinkered and delusional. Good engine and RWD, I can't see any other positives. £12k in one year? My RS has cost me less over 3years and only had one trip to the dealer other than servicing. Also the RS would be the faster car in track standard vs standard, you are now driving a modified car and have more experience of that track.

What are the positives about the RS? It looks average, sounds absolute crap and it's general unreliablility are quite key negatives to me (one of my best mates has one btw). MK2 was much better and more special.
@tracktimevideos51645 жыл бұрын
@@mjhmotorsport your comments are only on subjective things. Personally I think it looks great and the 1series looks terrible although improved with the facelift. It sounds great (not on camera but in reality) although maybe not as nice as the m140. It has far more direct steering, it's grippier whilst still being very playful, has better body control and imo (subjectively) handling, much nicer seats and gearbox (no question), better brakes imo, I prefer the driving position (subjective I know), I prefer the infotainment system to BMW (subjective) although some may disagree. Also mine other than the recall has been totally reliable, it went in for its 3rd service last week and has no leaks at all and everything works like brand new. The RS just feels much more fun and less of a cruiser. Oh and depreciation...the M140i is dropping like a stone as did the m135i. Even a 3 year old Cat D RS with loads of miles is £22k.

@@mainman2999 It only has 'similar' performance because the boost is turned up massively (22.5PSI). It's impressive that the 140i engine has better performance and is on a very tame tune (14psi). I can’t understand some of the negative comments from Ford owners, unless they have owned both cars, simply saying the RS is a better car means very little. Mark has done a back to back comparison and let people know his findings. I’ve got 3 Fords - Mustang GT, Series 2 RS Turbo and a transit custom so am not a BMW fan boy piping up. I’ve driven all sorts, and owned all sorts. I also had an M140 for 2 years and I know how good they are. I like the RS too, it has its advantages as does the BMW, simply dismissing it is just childish. Great video Mark

Nice unbiased input. For someone who hasn’t driven either, which would you recommend?
@NickG245 жыл бұрын
waveybeats I think it depends what sort of driver you are, and what you are in to. Do you want something you can chuck into a corner with little skill, not worry about and revel in the way the car grips and performs? In which case the Focus RS could be for you. You can drive it with skill too but just about anybody can drive a Focus RS hard and get away with it. They drive superbly and guaranteed to put a smile on most people’s faces. You will also need to like it’s brashness and slightly unashamedly hot hatch exterior. If you prefer being rewarded for getting things right around a corner, be able to see improvement in the way you are driving and prefer something a bit more subtle and classy, then probably go for the M140. There is something magical about fast BMWs, 50/50 weight distribution, RWD and a sweet engine - they just know how to set up a car. I had the 8 speed auto which was superb, but definitely takes something away from the driving experience. They are noticeably quicker with the auto though. If you also appreciate a nice engine rather than a boosted 4 pot, the BMW straight 6 is a peach with huge potential. I think given some of the well documented issues with the RS engine may put a lot of people off. The RS residuals are, as some pointed out, better, but if you’re buying 2nd hand the BMW will be much cheaper in the first place. I had a Golf R before my M140, the golf definitely wasn’t as fast but the grip was immense, similar to the Focus. I missed the ability to grip in all weather when I changed to the M140, but think overall I had more fun in the BMW.

I came from an STi to my m140i, once I started treating it like more of a GT car than a hoonigan car my enjoyment went through the roof. This car is just an insane long distance cruiser considering what it's capable of. 40+mpg sitting under 2k rpm down motorways, then you can boot it sideways through a roundabout! Not sure if I love or hate the fact it doesn't look anything special, 1 series bmws are everywhere but I feel sorry for anyone in a 1 series without the B58, what a great engine.

I have to took it a few months ago for its first service and drove it 200 kms (there's no BMW dealer or specialist where he lives so he asked me to took it where i live for that) and as a long distance cruiser i can't think of anything better. Lots of power available even to scare you at times, amazing fuel consumption even with a heavy foot, and a not-so-unconfortable suspension to use it as a daily driver (here the M140i's came only with the non-adaptive suspension, adaptive isn't an option). I think the point here is the man has put a lot of thought into what he's saying and he's compared usage, enjoyment and figures moving from one car to the other. Is it all subjective? - In my humble opinion nothing is ever subjective; Mark likes the BMW better than the RS and that is his perception. I've never driven an RS so I won't disrespect it - I do however own an M140i and they are phenomenal cars. I've had an M140i for 3 years now and been to the dealers once because one of my boot-struts was squeaking. The breaks in my opinion are poor for a car with so much torque, especially if you're driving the auto. Mark - when you did the track day they would have felt awful because mine were exactly the same at that mileage; absolutely hideous and I was due a break fluid change at that time. Thanks for your review and thoughts.

I am asking because I am considering them for the spring next year. I am on Wintercontact TS850P right now, but the car came with MPSS. The issue I have with the MPSS is noise and harshness. This has become very evident since switching to the Contis, even taking into account the winter vs summer tyre differences.The PS4s are not viewed as a replacement for the MPSS and considered 'softer' and a 'step down' to the MPSS. Your view on this would be valued.
@MarkCup705 жыл бұрын
You have runflat or non-runflat PSS? If they're runflat that's your problem. As a summer or track tyre the PSS beats the PS4 all day long. The PS4 has great wet grip, but soft sidewalls giving some comedy squirming while on the brakes and loaded up in corners on track which doesn't help confidence levels. I changed my tyres 3 days ago, but I've gone for something completely different this time around...I'll have more on that in my next video.

I think so, and the fact that you're the only one to mention it for months kind of backs that up. Two hands on the wheel, ALWAYS, and a firm ride in the RS = lots of movement. Two hands on the wheel, ALWAYS, and a more pliant ride in the 140, and no one notices it.

He's been doing that track for donkeys years and knows it like the back of his hand. So it's nothing to do with learning it more in the 140i. It's just simply a better all round car and now it's got a proper diff it will be even quicker still.

Not really. If you dismiss the sundries. And whether or not you need new tyres and brakes and calculate the mileage you’ll be doing. Then have an more accurate idea for you. Depreciation won’t be the same either because that depends on the age and mileage you get one at. The newer the more you lose though.

M140i is an underrated car, everyone thinks it's slow because it loses to most other hatchbacks in the 1/2 mile and because of a bad driver but The M140i won the RS3 and A45 AMG by far in the half mile and the other hatchbacks are no where near the M140i. Also the rwd helps massively with rolling start drags and again win the other hot hatches by far, only if in the hands of a good driver
