Here is the complete video from 2014 ADAC Zurich Nürburgring 24h race onboard the BMW M235i Racing Cup. Unfortunately the driver crashed out already on the third lap which meant end of race for the team. The Mercedes SLS involved was able to continue the race.
The video overlay is made with RaceChrono Pro v4.0, and it took only 30 minutes to process on a Samsung Galaxy S4 due to RaceChrono Pro's hardware accelerated video encoding. The data on the video overlay was logged with RaceChrono Pro connected to Dual XGPS 160 (GPS receiver) and OBDLink MX Bluetooth (OBD-II reader). The audio track was post-processed using FFmpeg to fade out profanities after the crash. Video was recorded using GoPro 3+ black camera.

Armchair critics galore here. Having driven this race three times, I can tell you that the jump at the top of the hill at Flugplatz is completely unsighted as you come over the top and seeing a car's brake lights usually indicates a small jab before entering the next corner. This very good driver had a fraction of a second to get on the brake. He made an understandable error choosing throttle instead of the brake. This is multi-class endurance racing at it's best. Your result depends on a measure of good luck as well as everything else. His ran out.......Great footage, thanks for posting this!

not really as much of his fault as you may think. Mercedes showed break lights but the driver expected him to continue the throttle because porche was long ahead of the Mercedes

Actually, he did the exact right thing. The car was off the course, keep racing! But the SLS GT3 slowed way down for only God knows what. Of course in street driving, the person that runs into someone is usually at fault. Here in this case, once the car is off the track and you are gonig past, keep pushing...what was the SLS GT3 driver going to do, slow down and spectate? I'm being harsh, but it's racing...why would you slow down if you really didn't have to?

+Phynomeagle The run-out area is almost non-existent there so the sls driver obviously prepared for the 235 shooting back on track after hitting the barrier.

Wonder why he was on throttle when the brake lights on SLS were on well ahead of time. Very good run indeed tho.

You can clearly see that he started breaking, then he though it was clear and went full throttle into ROWE :(

ugghh tough break he was on the limit an doing well with traffic. Seems as though Merc and pack slowed up..caught him mid corner..

that was a weird crash, because he was doing way harder things beforehand. Avoiding/preventing this crash didn't seem that difficult. You clearly saw the car in front slamming and keeping on the brakes. Was this m235i being pressured from behind?

azagedon This is the Pro version, and it has all the video features: Video recording, GoPro remote control, video screen in analysis and overlait video export. It also has the features of the Analysis Pack (for better analysis and predictive lap timing) and Devices Pack (OBD-II reader support etc) that you can purchase separately for the free version.

+RaceChrono I am currently using VBOX timer but I gave RaceChrono a testdrive a few times (And I like it) but I can not get the realtime gap counter on display (Right bottom corner on video, -3.0 @14.52) on phone. The app does show section gap after crossing a trap but then disappears. Why is there no realtime gap counter showing on my app? is that a app version issue or a settings issue?

there is something funky going on with the boost gauge even if its the absolute pressure, it should go down towards 0.5bar when the throttle is closed.

This is what the car reports through OBD-II. It is absolute pressure so idling at 0.9 bar seems correct (slight vacuum). I'm not expert on this car so cannot comment on it further.

RaceChrono yes, it might be because of the drive-by wire and automatic gearbox that the ecu simply keeps the throttle bit open. Though that would mean that the engine is not helping with the braking

Janne Kotka It has a turbo that keeps a little bit of boost on so that when he gets on the throttle the response is instant, there's no turbo lag that way.

Janne Kotka Typical atmospheric pressure is already at around 1000 hPa or 1 bar. You have to add the pressure generated by turbocharger to the atmospheric pressure already in the air around it. So if the gauge shows 1,5 bar, the turbocharger has generated 0,5 bar of boost.

Mads Max Not me driving but I saw the race so here's what happened: The blue BMW got hit buy the yellow McLaren when it tried to pass and both spun out at that corner. The aftermath from that initiated this crash, and in my opinion even few more after this.

im sure when a faster car came up behind the blue bmw it messed up his line for a sec and over shot his braking point. takes so much disipline to be a good endurance racer and still be fast enough for the win. i want to try one day but only track days in my future no racing.

***** its hard to judge where a car has crashed around a blind corner just by seeing dirt. To be a good driver you must trust your jedi instincts or gut. I think 50% of drivers would have wiped out in that situation. I get it tho if you are against a clock in a race why would you brake for the unknown this reaction or lack of will separate the winners of a race from the looser.. In a parallel universe the driver made it past the crash no problem :)

Was it something like a stock 235 I ? Or is it tuned ? How many HP is this car please ? Anyone have the link to the specifications of the car maybe ?

+psyk00o they are rated at 320hp but they are underrated. dynos reveal they make closer to 340-350hp

Why did the guy in the m235i keep driving after his hood got messed up? Pretty obv that it would slam against the window...

Makram Ben He was trying to bring in the damaged car, but unfortunately had to abort due to leaking fluids. The chassis was bent so the hood was not a big problem :)

Xin Xao Actually, that's what happens when a big cloud of dust signals someone going off-track and you roll back on the gas instead of the brakes.
