couple tips, get head professionally checked always!! never set down a head with camshaft in it on the valves. they could bend. always set it upside down. clean fluids out of head bolt holes! if left in the hydraulic pressure will give you a false torque setting and loosen later. use new head bolts! old ones are stretched. after assembly rotate engine by hand to double check cam to crank timing. valve interference means new engine. use copper exhaust nuts. upgrade to 4 pintle ford injectors

Not doubting your mechanical knowledge. Just wanted to add a couple things for someone using this video as a guide. Pro checked head will also find bad valve seats and cracks you may not be able to see. I always rotate engine after timing belt change on m20 engine. 10 seconds of free motor saving insurance. Valve springs can rotate the cam after head removal

Nice Job! Good Video! I noticed some oil leaking very "Slightly" from my head at 180,000 miles now. Between number 5&6 cylinder on the passenger side. Runs down past the block drain plug. I don't know if I have to change my head gasket yet. But if I do, this was a great video to see. I never worked on one of these engines. So I don't know if I should be alarmed. It is very slight, and I only noticed it because I was trying to find my drain plug on the block.

Although this is an old video and the uploader has done a great job sharing this. If the head has pitted ports like that. I would send it off to the machinists. Also like someone else here has said, get the head skimmed, machined off by professionals. I would look into the pistons and Valve stems too while i have this much of an apart with that mileage. Replace new bolts and plastic and rubber pipes.

Hi, I'm from Brazil and I got a 535i 1990 with 90875 miles and I'm doing some repairs in my car... unfortunately, here in my country the spare parts are difficult to find..... and sometimes the only way is "run" to an authorized, but, the prices..... oh my God.... Well, I'll keep working, it is a fantastic car.... She rides very well and very comfortable, considering her age... It's a great car ! I think would be nice to change some knowledge and some tips. Good luck with your car.

Victor Castro if it works use it man... BMW wants ridiculous ammounts for even the smallest of things.. $200 for an o2 sensor.. (Mustang ones work if you splice the connector and cost $40)

good video and nice looking ride. I wish my 90 5 speed was in this good of shape body wise. i'm planning on doing this job soon. loss of coolant and overheat. pretty sure my head will need milled. I read the manual but I like a good video to go along with it. you're a lifesaver. thanx

Ah you have the 5 speed, lucky man. I have the 4 speed auto version. Still goes pretty good though! I think I may have mentioned it in the video, but in the end it took me about three days (evenings) to finish this job. It's worth taking your time at it if you can. Good luck!

If the two camshaft's (24:35 on the right side) lobes are worn & causing a tick tick engine noises. Anyway to correct it or add or mod to lessen the noises beside replacing the camshaft? And camshaft used is way overpriced. Car has low resale value that I don't want to throw money into a 38 years old car (M7). Can the camshaft's lobe peak be welded while it still on the engine? Parts are so hard to find & once available the price is way up north.

always get the head surfaced and pressure checked alot of work to have to do it over again because of a unseen crack and it usually only cost about 50 bucks for the machine shop to do it
@gregh7457
@gregh7457 7 жыл бұрын
"always" ?? i thought the only time you need resurface is if its warped or has erosion/pitting? I have no doubt this head gasket started leaking not long after because of all that erosion around the water ports. To repair that would require grinding out the eroded aluminum and tig welding, then resurface.

Thanks For Posting This. It's very informative. I'm amazed at how many trolls who've never made a video, are quick to post negative comments. We can all share advice, but to be an ass about it, demonstrates the troglodyte mentality of some full time mechanics. Their boss keeps them away from people for a reason. Lol.. I said some.. not most.

I know this is an old video but I have a question: I did the same for my M30 6 years ago and I can't remember if I torqued the bolts after running the engine at normal temps. I know that Bentley states that they have to be torqued at a specific angle after getting the engine into temperature. Did you do that or you just followed the torque specs from the head gasket pack? Thanks

Very good job. Me, i am driving BMW since 1985: BMW 320/4, BMW 3181is, BMW 328i, BMW 528i, BMW 116i, BMW 125i with complete m-pak and m -erformance pak (not 218 PS, but 240 PS, and since December m140i. Last car is my favorite, the 125i was not good. As is ordered the car it had six cylinders, when i got it: 4 ylinder turbo. This car needs nearly the same fuel as the m140i. But: IfYou are drviving 130 km/h the m140 i needs about 6,5 l fuel

Different materials of head and block will allways give headgasket problems over 250000 km +But the pitting issue is likley caused by bad coolant.It will leak in no-time because you did not repair the pitting issue

stupid question, but to turn the engine. Do you do that with the big bolt on the fan? I am planning to do a valve adjust, and im pretty new to working on cars.
@phoenix_plays_3515
@phoenix_plays_3515 Жыл бұрын
you could do that if your belt is tight enough, if it isnt, you can turn the big balancer nut on the bottom. If you are only adjusting valves, even if your belt isnt tight enough, hold it tight with your hands, it will be good enough to slightly rotate the engine to get the camshaft lobes where you need them to be

Hey I see it's been awhile since you uploaded anything on your E34. I was just wondering if you still owe on the car and how's it running. I currently have a 1990 535i with 280k miles. It currently runs amazing but I plan to do this job in the future. I feel you did great work explaining how this job is completed. Only thing I would recommend now after seeing the footage is a lifter adjustment. Thanks for the great info!

Can someone measure the length of a BMW straight 6 engine block and write back to me? Or the full engine length with the front pulley, doesn't matter. Can also be the M52 engine. I was wondering how it compares to the Chey 250 inline six.

I'm currently replacing a head gasket for the same engine.. How do you take the nuts off the bottom end of the intake manifold? It's a little tricky as you stated..
@tgamber
@tgamber 10 жыл бұрын
When removing the head I took the head and the intake off as a single unit (had a friend help me). When putting things back together I did each one individually to make it easier to place the head(lighter). Putting those bottom nuts back on for the intake was very very tough. I used extensions, flexible joints, and spanners and still had a very tough time. Those things are in a very tight spot so no matter what you do it will be very tricky. Good luck!

Well at least the m30 block must be way better than the m20....for 2 years ago i have done my cilinder head together with my garage owner...now again oil pooring into my cooling system again and again....im really getting frustrated because only after 2 years you ll just have to get it of.....again!!! And there were more options about what went broke...the head that got cracked....the gasket doesnt tighten anymore... or a cilinder spring just broke....no fun after only 2 years and no big amount of kilometers....

Defintely something that shouldn't be undertaken without know-how and proper tools. "Looks pretty good considering" visually is probably the worst measurement you can make, as well as a cheap ruler for checking the surface for warping. Engine don't run using clearances/tolerances that can be seen by the naked eye. The fact that it runs is luck all by itself.
