Wow, the Estate Cars are really doing well to be running in the 12 seconds bracket because 34 years ago, my street Corolla was doing a blistering 12.1 seconds on the 1/4 mile when all others were in the 18-second bracket. So keeping things into perspective, you can still have quick cars ideally suited for the family.

@@ravenheart369 Same reason why electric cars have such bad top speeds, the amount of energy to speed up at 100+ miles is much larger than 0-60 where electric cars like Teslas shine, of course this wouldn’t be a problem if charging was as quick as filling up. The upcoming EV HyperCars can reach 200+ miles but that’s what you should expect from a multi-million price point.

Tesla’s look boring the model s is pretty bland and they were saying the roadster was coming out in 2020 so I will believe it when I see it (announced in 2017 and will come out after cyber truck and semi so probably late 2022 - 2023)you can barely take a model 3 round the track for more than 30-40 minutes continuously so they still have a long way to go. The roadster will still be great value even if it underperforms on what’s been promised.

You probably meant older 5-cyl T5 and T6 because Volvo still make T5 and T6, only they are 4-cyl now. T8 is T6 + electric. And I don't think the story would be different. Current stock T5 and T6 have better performance than the older ones. Yes, we can talk about sound and character of those engines. That's the different story.

"Go!" says Matt and stays the last... This actually is the biggest uncertainty about Hybrid cars. They talk about fuel efficiency from using the electrict drive, but it adds 200-300 kilos to weight, which literally makes the fuel saving questionable overall.

I used to own a 2012 Lexus GS450h (L10). Got 47-48mph on a run (including 1.5 hours in London rush hour) and yet from 30-70 it would drop my 981 Cayman S...and basically anything else it wanted to. 200hp electric motor (more than an F1 car's motor...always nice!) strapped to the engine out of an Evora, those things are monsters. Also, battery placement meant it handled like it's mid-engined. I say that with the aforementioned 981 as my daily ☺ That Lexus was more powerful, at least 20% more efficient and about 150kg lighter than the new Audi S6 (euro-spec TDi). Quattro/launch control and 8 years of tech get the Audi to 60 a full 0.1 secs quicker too, I'd bet on the GS down a slip road any day! Hybrids are great, just not many manufacturers have worked out how to make them into decent performance cars yet. Other than than the GS450h, LC500h and Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid (name is so long the badge weighs 20kg), I've not come across any vaguely "normal" hybrids that get the performance stuff right. Some are fairly quick- Volvo T8s and BMW activehybrids, but they just need time to work out handling. I don't think any except Lexus design their cars from the start for battery placement and even Lexus only get it right with a couple of cars, the IS300h is a lovely comfy ride but the handling is meh at best.

All I can really give you is that me and my cousin work at the same place and drive the same journey every day with a similar driving style. I have the s4 saloon (2021) and he has the m340i (2020) and I average 46.2 mpg, he gets 29. The difference is pretty substantial I'd say. I love having 99% of the power but 150% of his fuel economy 😂

The M340i has a much nicer interior I'd say. Not a fan of the Volvo focus on the big vertical screen, plus it's a bit low down. I've been extremely critical of BMW interiors for ages but the new ones are actually pretty good. I'd imagine they're all pretty decent to live with, but the BMW engine makes it far more special. ...full disclosure, if I wanted a practical car again, I wouldn't buy any of these.

​@@jameswingrove7421 Good question...M340i I reckon is 3rd on my list. 1st would be a Lexus GS450h. It's not perfect- launches like a boat and the steering does lack feel plus it has limited lateral grip so definitely not a track toy. 30-150mph it's identical to the M340i though, but with Bentley levels of luxury (moisturising aircon anyone?), gets 50mpg on a run or round town and has great handling balance- loses grip but is insanely easy to control. Sadly this car stopped production in 2018 so used only, but it's a Lexus, they basically don't age. 2nd choice for me would be the Peugeot 508 PSE. Looks basically like a more exciting version of the Volvo. One of the sexiest cars around both inside and (especially) out. Also 50-75mph (80-120kmh) in 3.0s, bearing in mind I can't even find a claimed time for the BMW better than 3.3. It's not faster than the BMW down a 1/4 mile I'd imagine but that proves it's got some shove! Bit long, but I'm a big fan of those 2 cars. M340i is still a great car though, Volvo isn't bad either, I just don't find it exciting.

I’m a big fan of the 508’s styling and to my eyes it is the best looking mid size executive saloon on the market at the moment. Not bad choices but for me I’d probably take a very lightly used and rare Volvo V60 Polestar.

​@@jameswingrove7421 In the case of the GS450h you absolutely would...you won't find many cars better balanced on the limit (including any F models) and with relatively narrow tyres (235) and loads of power the limit is easy to find. LC500 also beat the DB11 in a handling test, so no dynamic issues there. Any other non-F Lexus cars aren't great dynamically though these are definitely exceptions. Old IS250/350 was the only other fairly good chassis. Edit: I suppose an obvious thing to say is that the GS has whooped the Panamera in a few road tests. It's a crazy car. The polestar has decent performance but the Pug is just a bit better in every way. The V60 beats the GS to 30mph (as do most things) but the GS is in its own league at high speeds, plus has that epic handling and obviously is incomparable for luxury and reliability. The V60 also isn't exactly efficient in comparison to either. If you want something a bit more raw the the V60 ticks that box best, but to be honest at that money...well that's why I drive a 981 Cayman S. I'd say the V60 is most closely comparable to an A45, and I'd take it over one of those.

Was the battery of the T8 full enough? and it might be the same as the older V60 D6 Hybrid that the electric power cuts above 160KM/h after that the D6 was quite a bit slower when accelerating and in a disadvantage vs a normal D5 because of the battery weight.
