It's a manual transmission not an automatic. The e46 used a sequential manual with a single clutch. This uses a dual clutch. Not automatic. The technology was derived from F1.

Refreshing review! If you only listen to the so called enthusiasts you wouldn't by an M car past maybe the e46. They just bash on everything from the turbos to steering feel. Most people spending the money just want a fun car that looks good. To me a convertible is where it's at, might as well enjoy the car, who cares how it performs on the track if you never even take it there. Great review brotha, brought it back down to earth!

That is one amazing colour on that M4. Definitely the best color you can choose for the M4.

They name the M4 colours after race tracks (except black, white and grey). This one is Sakhir Orange, named after the Sakhir Circuit in Bahrain. The blue is Yas Marina Blue, and the yellow is Austin Yellow, named after the Circuit of the Americas.

Take over M4 CONVERTIBLE lease on Swapalease.com Drive it a few months and trade out for something else. Great way to get in and out of cool cars without long term commitments. Mine is the WHITE with RED extended leather interior.

Looks good, but that’s a car that can be beat by a 392 challenger, and not even the hellcat variant, for LESS money. German car companies have been on a self-destructive march for a while now. AMG is another overpriced techno-bubble with underpowered powertrains. I won’t even mention Porsche.

Next time please just research why convertible is heavyer than hardtop, what you told about weight beeing up high because of the roof is plain wrong. Convertible versions are heavier because with no roof the car lacks rigidity the roof would provide so the chassis needs to be reinforced. Thus extra weight...

+Matija Kovačič You're right. But the coupe has a carbon fibre roof to help lower the centre of gravity. The convertible has a folding metal roof, which raises the centre of gravity. That's the point we were trying to make.

So you would say a normal sporty driver wouldn't really notice the difference in Stiffness and Handling between Coupe and Convertible? Im actually in the process of ordering a M4. I drive a 435i Convertible atm, its a great car but a bit boring tbh. So i drove the M4 coupe last week and was blown away. That thing is really awesome. Problem is, no dealer has a convertible to test drive ATM, so im a little scared some of the amazing feeling will go away with the convertible. Also the Coupe just looks more menacing IMO. Also the Seats, the Convertible has the same seats as the 435i, the coupe gets special seats. Meh, hard to decide. First world problems i guess.

If you drive them back to back, HARD, you may notice. But only if you're trying hard to notice. What do you think made the M4 Coupe so amazing during your test drive? I'll try to tell you if the M4 Convertible does the same.

Rory Reid I wasn't expecting much from the M4. I thought its more like a engine upgrade to my 435i. But it was nothing like my car at all. When i got into it and drove i felt like I was sitting in a Supercar. I drive a Ferrari California from time to time (basically whenever i can borrow it from a relative) and the M4 did feel very much like it to drive, apart from the sound of course. I drove a Boxter GTS right afterwards and it felt like a really good sports car, but it just didnt blow me away that much. Maybe its the scaryness i like, as the GTS was very composed and the M4 just evil.

Baerzilla I've driven the California too. It is a supercar in my eyes :) Anyway, here's what you do... Get two reasonably big dudes to sit in your 435i. You might be able to feel some of the effect the extra weight makes. Not in terms of acceleration (the M4's engine is so powerful you won't really notice the weight in that respect) but with agility. Although, again, bear in mind the M4 Convertible has better suspension than your 435i so it can cope better with more weight too. Maybe it's like adding one or 1.5 passengers to your 435i. If you think that extra weight ruins the handling, then go for the M4 Coupe. I personally don't think it will. Also, consider the Jaguar F-Type :)

Excellent review. Nice to see a commentator who is interesting and doesn't stumble all over himself. I have a F10 M5 - don't know if I could go with a 6 cylinder. The dual clutch has amazing acceleration. All performance cars should be setup that way. All the best of a clutch with none of the work, lag and mistakes. My guess is that BMW didn't want the M4 to compete directly against M5 on price.

Top review and like the guys below said, I'll re-iterate "an actual real world review" which we need as you touched on a valid point about the roof taking perhaps a long time but that it is only a 1st world problem an doesn't actually matter, and I like the german bit, upstairs bmw talking to the engineer - "make it loose control !"
