That V-10 is unbelievably exciting. My oldest son loaned me his M6 for a week. It had the V-10. I had it up to 170 mph and the speedometer was still climbing.

Oh that sound! S85 is a stunning engine. If you can stomach the potential issues and maintenance costs these are incredible driving snapshots of motoring history be it an E60/61/63/64. What's nice is how a C6 RS6/S6 and E60/E61 M5 drive completely differently even though the formula (big v10 family/exec car) is similar. Something for everyone!

Depends how you look at it. An LS7 came out around the same time, it has around the same hp (505 hp) and it is essentially a smaller, ligther engine, and a lot more reliable too. Might not have a crazy v10 sound i"ll admit, but if you destroke it and put in an aggressive cam it will also reach a high rpm (8000) despite being a pushrod engine.

for a very short time i got the chance to work at BMW M GmbH on this engine we were doing some engineering and developping some kind of mild hybrid V10. was interesting to work with them. they were so much more humble than all the guys from BMW AG and so much more nice to work with. So yes there was a M5 V10 mild-hybrid driving around in Munich. Never released however...

If you're doing 200km/h at 5.000rpm, it has to be a fast sportscar/supercar that will do 300km/h at 7.500rpm and hit the limiter at over 8.000rpm, or you're nearly maxing out your ordinary car. But even if I pretend 200km/h is cruising speed, I think cars only need one overdrive gear. I don't understand cars like the Honda Accord, for instance, which hits top speed in 6th, but has ten gears. In that case, yes, I think those are stupid overdrives. But it's just my opinion. ;)

Tires truely make a world of difference on these E61's I have a set of Dinan Champion wheels that came with 275 Michelin Pilot Sports front and back and it made my 535XiT/6MT M-sport feel like a super car in the bends, masked the weight of car incredibly well.

Turbo není ten problém. Nebo aspoň ne ten hlavní. Jedním z důvodů je koncepce V8 s křížovou klikou a bore/stroke poměrem skoro 1:1 vs. koncepce V10 s bore/stroke poměrem okolo 1:1,2. S tím se pojí možnost vyšších otáček, více koní, vyšší rychlosti. Další věcí, a to velmi podstatnou, je zpřevodování. Jednoduše řečeno - motor by to zvládl, ale BMW nemá důvod tohle dělat.

Those V10 are just insanely vocal...BMW V10 really sonorous like V10 from Lambo...then deep RS6 V10TT and rumbly 8.4 V10 from Viper, the higher pitching V10s start with Lexus LFA and after then only Carrera GT comes heavenly...well even V10 TDI from Touareg R50 is gold 😎
