BMW M54 Engine DME EWS Master Key Tumbler Swap Part 1

It is possible to swap the Key Cylinder with Key, EWS and DME from a similar vehicle and it works. I did it on a 2000 323ci due to my only key being stolen. The hardest part was having to Drill out the existing key Cylinder. To do so, it is best to remove the Steer Wheel, only if drilling is required. For those who might not know ... The DME is located behind the Transmission Control Module in the same compartment in the back right corner under the hood. Good Luck!

I would like to send a special thanks all the way from the Bahamas. I've watched this video 20 times wondering if I should try this myself or give my mechanic 500 bucks to switch my key tumbler, EWS and DME. Well I was tired of waiting and didn't want to spend the money, I tried it and I'm so glad to say that it worked!!!! I only wished u showed how to remove the tumbler/key switch. That took some serious research but was so easy it was scary. I have a 2004 330CI stick shift vert. Long story short, my previous mech blew on original DME. I sent it to be repaired and was temp using a Z4 2.5 engine DME and EWS. Every time I hit 3 thousand RMP the EML light would turn on and the engine would shut off. WHILE DRVING! He didn't tell me he replaced my original 330ci DME with a 2.5 Z4 DME!!! Anyways thanks. Subscriber for life.

Great video. I did exactly what you described. I own a 2000 323ci and bought the exact kit ECU,DME,and key cylinder. After installing everything as instructed unfortunately the car doesn’t seem to turn over at all. All light turn on but car doesn’t seem to crank at all. I’m a little stumped at the moment. But if any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Everything should be from the same donor car for it to work.

Joe Teklemariam my old mechanic did a terrible job with the service and every 100k miles you should change hoses, oil separator etc., plastic parts, they go bad it’s a 2003 so u must know, long story short, i had a lean problem with the engine, I change everything then learn about it, at the end I spend hours in videos of e46s then it all points to the DME, swap it bro, or if you have a new one, pair it with the key

Have yall done like a swap out on the ews modules, in particular im trying to get an ews from a '99 323i to a 2000 z3 because the chip/transpondent from z3 fob is missing. Would it work if i dont swap the ignition cylinder hence door locks, just put the chip into the key, and the modules on the dash?

Forgot... 5 series is a postlift version... so have to transfer acceleration pedal as well, that will required extra wiring ... is it just a simple wire or a whole bunch of harness from 5series interior. thankyou

2005 330 CI 29,000 mi, car cranks but won’t start, but only when it’s cold out. Live in NY. Had to have it towed to the dealer, after ruling out fuel pump, sensor relay, new key, they say it’s the DME, they took out the DME and kept it inside over night put it back and the car that was in the cold and it started right up. They want $1900, is this fair? And do you think this is the right diagnosis. Can the cold affect the DME?

currently working on a 05 x3. I am assuming the key lost programming because the key fob stopped unlocking the doors 2 days before the car stopped starting. Now , i turn the key and the dash lights up but no engine crank. I jumped the starter and it turns over but car will not run. Are there any test you can recommend before I spend the money and buy replacement parts?

Its a common issue where keys security feature stops working. happened on my 99 BMW 740i. Luckily had a spare key and engine turned on. You can purchase a key from dealer or buy the whole dme kit.

Wow, I cannot believe anyone would change DME, EWS, key and ignition switch in a lost key situation. This is the most expensive and time consuming way, simply put dumb. If you loose a key BRAND NEW ONE from the dealer around $150 ALREADY CUT AND PROGRAMMED TO YOUR EWS. No need to waste time and money on replacing EWS, DME and ignition. ALSO your EWS holds VO, VIN, coding and mileage so by installing one from another car you asking for problems. If you need to replace DME in E46, you can get one on eBay for $25-$100 and swap a memory chip. If you not comfortable with this, you can have it done for around $150 also on eBay. Total cost $250-$275.

From our experience, if your bmw is automatic, then donor dme kit would need to be auto as well.

Thats right you no longer have to program assuming to are swapping from auto to auto or manual to manual car. Im not sure this works if you go from manual to auto version. So you'll have to likely specify whether you have a manual trans car or an auto trans car.

Great Question. Yes, you can use with manual or automatic as long as the DME has the same part # and your bmw is the same year as the donor car. You can swap without having to reprogram.

@@bimmermerchant Sorry but that is wrong. The EWS from the Automatic looks for a signal from the gearbox ("P") whereas the one from the manual does not have this. Therefore you cannot interchange between auto and manual.

When you think you got just a destroyed dme and the engine will start you can just replace the dme without any other party

JUST CHANGE OUT THE CHIP INSIDE THE DME FROM UR OLD ONE WITH THE REPLACEMENT DME NO NEED TO REPLACE THE EWS AND KEY. ON E46 ITS THE 44 Leg chip it will say on it AM29F400BB. ITs the memory chip.
