We continue with the assembly of the BMW M57 engine. In this video, we going to install the oil pan, the oil cooler, the engine support brackets, the front crankshaft seal, the vacuum pump and etc.

Hey Crank, that's an amazing video, thank you very much! A little question, how bad is that the vacuum pump from inside is looking scratched (like yours at 21:00)? I dissassembled that after two months of car staying at one place, and there was no oil inside that, also seating places for intake/exhaust shafts are a little scratched, the mileage for car is 350k km

I did the vacuumpump on my 335d, and it looks the same, so the scratches are normal I think

As always, thank you for another great video! I really appreciate all of the insights and call outs of special considerations and techniques you have learned through your experiences. That helpful wisdom, from your experience, is what most KZbin videos do not provide and sets you apart from the others! I too would be interested to purchase your special tool for installation of the crankshaft seal. Question: I’m sure I could look up the specifications, but maybe you know from experience, if your special tool would also work for installation of the crankshaft seal on an R52 Mini Cooper S Convertible. I have that job coming up on one of my other cars and it has all of the same difficulties. If it does not fit you might consider leaving the tool as three pieces and have interchangeable white plastic cones and metal rings that would work for various different engines. Maybe you put three locating pins on the piece that bolts to the crankshaft and corresponding holes on the various sized rings to insure they remain aligned throughout the installation process. Might also make it more potentially profitable to manufacture the special tool if it was capable of being used on many different engines.

Thanks Sonny! Depends which engine the Mini has. The petrol engines have totally different type of crankshaft seal, so this tool will not work for sure. The crankshaft center pulley has only one bolt in the middle. I need to talk to someone with CNC machine to make me an offer, for producing it.

Hello, my m57 has milky oil. Mechanic pulled out about 12/13l of milky oil somehow. I taught it was the oil radiator failing but usually it puts oil in coolant not coolant in oil, yet I asked him to check it. He said he tested it and it wasn't it, said it's either a headgasket or a warped/cracked head or block. Is that common on m57? It didn't overheat and it was very sudden to mix the coolant inside the oil (was driving slowly then out of nowhere it made a lot of white smoke, similar to a blown turbo) any ideas?

Have you ever measured engine oil pressure on M57 with engine at operating temp aprox 90C ? mine was 0.8bar i have changed timing and also oil pump but have not measured again ...

Yep it is around 0.5-0.8 most of the time

The best detailed video's 🔥 love it👌coz i got m57 engine. #CRANK. Is it possible that front shock absorbers(struts) loosing gas preshure with time and getting soft? Becose when im going over some bumps i hear front right side some knocking sound....but sound feels like its under tension. Could it be spring which makes sound becouse strut is too soft ? All the rest control arms, shock top mounts... everything is fine.

Thanks Peter! You have to have some oil leakage from the shock. This will be the indication for shock absorber going bad.

You can take MAHLE oil filters. They come with those O-rings, and have a good quality too
