Although generally speaking this should be quite a simple job for a home mechanic - IF you run into complications as I did then it becomes more difficult. Don't let that put you off having a go but do be aware that thing's don't always go to plan.

IMPORTANT: I am aware I didn't reinstall the shaft "in phase", When I pulled it out it was as it was, and questioned myself about it at the time but just thought that I must have been missing something. Sure enough, I should have trusted my gut instinct and phased it properly. It's a 15-minute job to put that right and by the time you are reading this, I would have done it. With the pressures of cameras , lighting, getting the content I slipped up. I just wanted to make you aware of that and when editing this I did notice and I wished at the time I had put that right. Here is a update video showing me "phasing" kzbin.info/www/bejne/mX-Vg56cqNaWms0 Also remember these are bushes not bearings so when you see me hammering them in I had already tried to use a G clamp to press them in and it wouldn't fit in my vice , so hammer it was... I know it looked brutal but that was the best way tbh. Thanks E.R

Very well done and equally helpful to someone who does most of his maintenance work. Your lighting was good, your descriptions were good, your camera angles were good, your inclusion of your challenges was good and your editing was good. All around well done. If I am allowed a small, small suggestion... Take the bike for a quick ride afteyou have slaved over her and then look into the camera and tell us how much better she handles and how totally worth it is to do this repair... we all love successful completion of a project. Again, well done.

I couldn't agree more with you Steve. Yes I take it constructive mate no probs there. Reality is Exeter has had terrible rainfall this last week so I wanted to do just that but it didn't allow me. Great suggestion though thanks for your kind words. As I am sure you can tell , setting up the lighting etc is a pain when you just want to get on with the project but I am pleased with how it turned out. Thanks for watching.

Cor yea, that shaft was a knitemare even though it should have been a easy clean up, grease away you go but no.... Got there in the end and it was worth it 😉👍🍻

"Exeter Rider Workshop". I like it 👍. Well done on the repair. Let us know how it rides. I didn't think it was the tyres to be honest - those Metzeler Z6 aren't actually too bad. My CR was fitted with them by the dealer as part of the deal. They wouldn't have been my choice but there you go. They're quite cheap due to only using a single rubber compound. But Metzeler achieve a similar performance to dual compound tyres by using radial reinforcing which has a more dense winding on the centre of the tread and looser on the shoulders.

Hi, it rides amazing mate, such a difference, but I still feel the back skipping far too much. For example, have you seen my turntable I use to spin my bikes around? Well if the board is wet from the wheather the. Z6 tires can't even get up it... The back just spins off. But the Dunlops on my NC are fine. I still can't wait to change them, but I'm OK with them for summer riding. Thanks as ever for watching pal 👍📺

I would just have been a little gentler inserting the new bearings, pull them in together using a threaded bar and some nuts, washers and sockets so you are pressing them in via the outer race, you don't want to be hammering on the inner race if you misfire with the lump hammer, or just tap them in with a socket on outer race. you should notice a difference now the shaft is free to slide.

Fair enough mate, I take that on board.... I actually tried a big G clamp but it was so much pressure it twisted the G clamp bar so thought this was the only option. Remember that this were not bearings but sealed bushes with no hole right through so you couldn't get a threaded bar right through.... If I'm understanding you right. @@exeterrider No problem, I thought they were needle roller bearings like the sort you get in suspension linkages etc. but I watched again and you are replacing these with bushes If I got it right. I put any I do in the freezer to shrink them a bit and heat up the housing they go into to expand it a bit, makes it easier to press in I think anyway. jobs done now and if they last a well as the originals they are fit and forget.

Great vid. I did cringe when you bashed in the bearing. I would have pressed it in with the vice;but of course it may not have been possible. Well done.

Thanks Lorraine, yes it wasn't a bearing but its actually a brass Bush so no ball races inside. I tried to press them with a g clamp but not a chance that was going to happen and it twisted my clamp. It wouldn't fit in my vice so lump hammer it was😂🔨thanks for watching👍🔩

Great job there, that bike doesn't look 20! I was wincing when you took the lump hammer to it, though I understand why you would... though if you are going to "tickle" parts like that and only have a numb hammer use a bit of sacrificial timber to cushion it, then you can bray it (northern term) properly and not worry too much re cracks/damage/shattering suprises. Otherwise top job all round 👍 I am not a mechanic either just involuntary experienced bodger. p.s Is your back tyre shot?

Thanks Si, yes I did try to press the bushes in with a big Record G clamp but it bent it, then I tried a lump hammer with a piece of oak inbetween but I didn't have the control needed then and it was going in "scew wiff" so in the end had to be a bit brutal but it gave me the control needed. Back tyre is fine, it has a large centre part on the tyre with no tread which is good to avoid wear but it's not very grippy, I look forward to getting these changed tbh

The parts numbers have changed where I bought mine so its best to call in to get the exact model you need for that year. They are all different.

I'd consider myself a DIY bike enthusiast, but I wouldn't of had the confidence to do this. Saved yourself a fortune though compared to a dealership doing the work. Hope you wiped your greasy finger prints off that rear brake disc?

Yes it was a challenge in this case, as you say I saved £150 at least I would imagine. You should never wipe grease on a brake disc Alan😂👍 but she had just washed the kids school uniform and hung it out on the line. So used that instead...... I just said the black marks was Exeters air pollution living near a main road 😂
