I've seen the chains snap at 65k, due to infrequent oil changes but I've just changed a valve cover gasket on an engine that's serviced every 8k that had a new Febi timing chain kit fitted 90k miles ago and there was no play whatsoever on the chain, sprocket in perfect condition. It's all about the service intervals.

Over the years I notice with the N47 that the heavier cars, x1 etc have the chain snap more often then the smaller cars 118d etc but no excuses for this one its simply very poor maintenance.

Oil life is lower in the heavier cars as the engine is working harder more of the time - but the comedy long service intervals are the same for every model.

main problem is not maintainance but badly designed engines( n47, n57) with timing chain and main bearings problem. I bought e60 with m57n2 engine that had oil changes every 30k km and still was running good at 400k km without any sludge under valve cover. Oil change every 10k km may help a bit but still it will likelly spun bearings or brake timing chain even before reaching 300k km
@W15Garage4 ай бұрын
You are right, like I’ve mentioned in the video, engines are made much poorer nowadays. M47 and M57 were legends. But unfortunately we have to work with what we have, n47 is nowhere near as robust as m47 - it never will be, but if taken good care of, could be a good engine.

The M47 & M57 are great engines for sure but down on economy & performance compared to the N47 & N57

My daughter owns an X1 and her partner a 2 series both with N47 engines which they bought at low mileages. The X1 has now done about 120k miles and the 2 series over 170k miles. Neither of them have timing chain rattle because they listened to me by ignoring BMW’s ridiculously long service intervals and get the oil and filter changed every 6-8k miles by using non long life quality oil and filters. I don’t care what oil you use, changing it every 18-20k miles is ridiculous. When I see cars with full BMW service intervals makes me cringe. I also tell them to warm the car up before driving them hard and let them tick over for a minute or two after driving them hard before switching them off to save potential turbo damage.

it may have 0 noise and just to brake unexpectedly seen that many times with this engine. better to check with timing chain wear indicator for those engines

Drive a 2009 LR Freelander 2, 2007 BMW Z4 and even an old 1980 MGB, and even though I only use them occasionally I religiously change the oil and filter every 6 months - overkill probably but as you say it’s cheap compared to issues caused by not doing it. Even low mileage causes its own issues - mainly internal engine condensation and the telltale milky residue on the filler cap. Changing the oil helps as does venting the rocker cover after a long hard run? Good video 🫡
