BMW N47 Low Compression After Catastrophic Timing Chain Replacement???

Have done many N47 chain failures , only had one with bent valves , just replace broken rockers and off they go . Same with Peugeot 1.6 diesel but have to replace camshafts on those as the lobes move

You are brilliant. Don't let them comments affect you. I watch your channel as I would any big youtuber like Mat or Tavarish. If you have a hiss from the turbo make sure it is not a blocked DPF make sure you don't have any glow plug lights on so that it can fillup DPF with sooth. I have this issue with a mini, new turbo and the sound is still there, same n47 engine. I believed turbo was faulty but even with a new turbo still sound is there.

Thanks a lot, really appreciate it!! I just had a bit of time to investigate the turbo tonight, and luckily turns out it is the intake hose that connects the airbox with the turbo, the rubber has a small split.😊

Thanks for the video and the confirmation. When the piston hits a valve, something has to give but it does seem that recent engines (last 20 years ?) the rocker has been designed to fail first. The compression ratios prove that the valves seal well.

Good job. They are equal. I was wrong. Probably was a cylinder fuel wash at the first start when it was sounding unevenly. Keep them coming!

Thank you for the solid content you provide! I watched the previous video and to be honest, even if the audio was bad when you cranked it, I seriously thought the valves were bent. The dissimilarity in sound did smoothed out in large portion, but still am totally surprised they are actually all equal. I wouldn't bother neither, if it has compression, it has compression. The only thing that can happen it that the valve stem would be so slightly bent, that it wouldn't keep up at high rpms, but still, you don't have to take the head off, to diagnose it. Keep it up, I see you as a true motorhead, and subbed :)!

I think bmw has a long vision about their timing chain quality That's why they made the rockers like that. Break the rockers upon wrong timing and save valves.. Excellent work mate..

Thanks! You're absolutely right. If the rockers fail easily, the valves don't get damaged. There are other possible outcomes as well, such as bent camshafts, broken carriers, or valve damage, but this is the most common outcome. I have another failed chain, and I'm curious to see what the damage will be.

Thanks for watching. I’ve disconnected the injector plugs. Based on my experience with this car’s mileage, this is a good value. Most importantly, all four are equal and well within the 10% range

@@jamie-hb8gy thanks for watching! After the robust m47 indeed n47 was a step back in terms of the usual bmw durability. It is much more sensitive to oil changes, driving styles, timing chain maintenance… But if taken care of properly, it’s a good engine in terms of performance and fuel economy.

Yes, N47 is a brilliant engine when maintained properly. I've always used 5/40 with 10k oil changes with all the ones I look after and after I've fitted new chains. I always use BGA chain kits. Never had any issues. Same with the N57.
