Your absolutely correct there Doc I've replaced the ignition coils plugs it was running like crap! Engine light came on once I changed just those things mate running like a dream still needing to replace vanos as well I've got all new parts rocket cover/gaskets seals radiator hoses filters vanos the lot I've Spent over $1500 just on parts but that's cheap! because of watching you and others on here where changing these very important parts makes a BIG difference in performance..Gonna pull the motor out to replace the rest new sleeves for the trans and treatment so just about an entire overhaul...the cars running great

Thank you for the video. Replaced my stock headers with Supersprint ones and I am getting 002C39 and 002C3A. I do have a tune for the headers. Is it the headers or something else causing the rough idle?

My motor has 220,000 miles on it and two coils have gone bad over the last 180,000 miles. When the second one went bad, I decided to make sure that I put the new ones on the back cylinders and keep a spare in the trunk that I could easily swap out while on the road since the front cylinder coils are easily swappable on the side of the road. Saved myself from having to buy three coils unnecessarily.

I have a NA spec E60 528i and I am looking for info related to the firmware update. I have just replaced both Vanos solenoids, which has cleared my faults and provided a bit better performance but has not solved the rough idle. I have also replaced all coil packs, plugs and valve cover. Is the firmware update you mention applicable to north american vehicles? If so are you saying that we need to become a premium member of yours to access the firmware information? No problem doing this if there is all info needed. Is there firmware version info, like current number, from BMW that is available somewhere? Thank you for all you do!

2009 528i rough idle and changed both Vanos. It would surge immediately after start, in gear and in neutral. Pulled them, clean old ones and reinstalled. Runs great. Still hesitates at acceleration but otherwise great car... Not sure where to go on this...

My n52 today i was going back home from work and my check engine light popped on when i was driving the car loss power on me and immediately stalled i turned it on again and idling it would just stall and go off what do you think it could be, i got 6 codes relating to it 2A17 DTML, 29E1 mixture control, 2AAE Fuel pump, 2D16 Air-mass sensor and finally 2f08 Intake-air temperature signal. Looking for advice on an idle so bad you can't drive it. Ok so to keep it short I have a 2010 328i xdrive and here's my issue. When starting the car it instantly fluctuates between 300-800ish rpms. Took to a shop I've taken my BMWs to for years for programming from module fuel control module ect.. so I do trust them. So was told that the battery (3 year old interstate battery)was bad (sat for 6 months so I guess possible) and the alternator was bad and causing the fluctuating rpms. Does this sound right? Also if you unplug the MAF it runs fine.

Check MAF, Throttle Body cleaning with idle re-learn, worn engine Mounts and a hidden one the non-resist valve vanos cylinder head check control valves (there are two) they have micro filtration filters like the vanos solanoids.

@battlehrfred the N51, N52, N54 & N55 do all have the check control valves. They are located right front of engine block (passenger side) near A/C lines. There is a bracket you gotta remove to gain better access after removing passenger front wheel and Fender well guard. It's an E7 Socket & the Check control valves are a T40 Socket. Use Brake Cleaner/Carborator Cleaner/Throttle Body Cleaner to clean out the microfilters on them and if possible Air hose dry afterwards and re-Lube o rings on them with fresh oil

my n52 has always trembled slightly at idle, I don’t think it could be called rough idle in my case , rpm fluctuations a few seconds after cold start and valve ticking until warmed up but otherwise never had codes, always pulled the same and was very smooth either at low or high load and/or rpm. Anyway I replaced the parts you mentioned except doing the software upgrade and sold the old ones which I think is a good way of keeping your engine in good shape, I mean after 10 years of driving a few components replaced shouldn’t be a problem for a premium car owner.

You should do A DIY about the transmission oil cooler lines & transmission oil cooler failure because if those fail you’re N52 transmission goes into limp mode. It’ll have you at A scare at first if you don’t know much about those issues because eventually they go bad.

hey, so my 2007 e91 328i Micky mouse flange broke, and i lost my coolant. bought an aluminum flange, BMW coolant, bled the system... multiple times because my radiator fan will not turn on. But it will turn on with AC, and it will turn on full blast when i disconnect the engine coolant sensor above the Micky mouse flange... why is my radiator fan not turning on when the engine is hot hot hot? i dont drive it because i dont want to break anything, i have another car.

How often will the vanos solenoids need replacing? I replaced them in 2017 and havent driven the car much but Ive been getting an intermittent tremble. I was gonna take it to the dealer for an update as per your other video but now Im confused. $200 for the update or $400 for new solenoids?

My N52, idle wobbles until alternator kicks in after 4 seconds, when volts go 14 plus, runs smooth. New vanos fitted, no difference. New servo tronic gasket fitted. Seems like an electrical problem. Wondering why it take 4-5 seconds for alternator to go 14+ volts.

I mean over 530D I would go for 535D much much more fun to drive but power and torque comes in so quick but is really really fun and very scary car to drive in the rain. N52 on the other hand is a exciting car and much much drivers car as you have to rev it out and it makes you feel more in control of the power and when the engine goes it goes just not as fast as the 530d or 535d 😀 but man literally I love them all I can’t choose seriously they are both fun and different people suit different engines it’s all based on you and what you prefer.

What about crankcase breather hoses? They become very brittle over the time and crack. With excess of air coming from the cracks the idle will be rough mostly with no codes. Vanos solenoid more likely will throw out some codes related to timing. Disa valves also should throw some codes.

Disa doesn’t throw a code at all ! As it’s not critical to the engine running so bmw doesn’t make a check engine light come on for disa. The only way you will know if a disa has failed is if you check it OR you scan it and it wil be a code in the system but that’s it. As for CCV that’s a vaccum leak and we cover all that on the next video 😁

They only realise they have a serious issue when the car stops running then buy a scan tool 😀

I don’t use any of them programs anymore mate it’s all too long now, and I have others that can do everything now that I no longer need them programs. They have made so many great scan tools that are easier , faster and much more easier to use that I don’t use any of them programs anymore if I don’t have too. I use all the time my OTOFIX D1 or the autel Maxisys elite. They will all pick it up quickly and easily, sorry bro just them programs have really gone down hill now and it’s really really not needed anymore, autel have smashed it out the water with what they have brang out now there system can do it ALL including keys , New ecus if you know how and the right tools to add on. That’s why you hardly see me use ista anymore.

Do USA N52 cars have disa valves?

Some do some don’t. 528i 528Xi 328i 328Xi will not have disa valves you have the underpowered N52 which they took away the three stage manifold and put it with no disas. If you have 530XI or 330Xi you will have magnesium valve cover which means you have three stage manifold and you will have disa flaps. I hope this helps

Solenoids ! Change them out for new genuine ones. That’s the first signs before they completely fail, there is no other way around it I know you will leave here probably look at another video about “cleaning” then do not be cheap and do not listen to that bull crap. Replacing them is the ONLY effective way or expect the same thing to happen and your car to only get worse until you break the bolts completely on the vanos gear. There around £200 to replace both direct from BMW

No ! And this only applies to the older N52 Engine cars with magnesium valve cover. Ones with black valve cover there is nothing you can do and no update will cure it.

@@BMWDoctor ok, don't laugh at me, but I tried putting on a plastic one, and as you suggested, it was a bad idea, and have now put a brand new magnesium one back on it, but sadly I replaced some bad Chinese Vanos with another Chinese Vanos before I watched you. So Now I need The OEM Vanos and a reprogram I think.

Nobody ever follows my advise as everyone seems to think I don’t know what I’m speaking about 🙄 if I didn’t I wouldn’t be where I am today so many people “Think” they can replace the magnesium for the plastic valve cover when they cannot ! I try and try and tell people this all the time the plastic ones are CRAP it’s a fact I prefer magnesium anyday over plastic and bmw will not let you get away trying things you believe will work and that’s what I love, you are FORCED to do it the right way or you ain’t gonna be driving these cars long. Again with the Chinese solenoid rubbish sorry my G but again that isn’t the way to be cheap, unfortunately you will need to spend £300 for new ones from BMW that’s your only way to fix your issue. I would say to factor in about £800 all in for the vanos and the update from BMW that’s IF they do it and you have one for your car as most will refuse to do it. It’s around $1500 nothing major get it sorted you have a good car

I just bought a 2008 Bmw 135i is running rough no much power. The worst is after sitting over night runs like shit and gets better after warms up but no power. I suppose to have 300 Hp feels more like 100HP . I have not freaking idea. Now I hate high maintenance BMWs I should stay with my loyal Toyota
